Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This response to Dr. Philip Martin’s work has three main dimensions: (1) explicating how an interdisciplinary dialogue can accomplish more than an intra-disciplinary one, (2) addressing the core policy choice Martin frames of planning, to have transnational migration more often create a virtuous circle than a vicious one, and (3) considering how the subfield of educational anthropology informs and/or complicates Martin’s 3 R’s of recruitment, remittance, and return. The first of these topics relates to the context for the generation of this paper: the interlocutor session organized by the Society for Urban, National, and Transnational Anthropology (SUNTA) at the 2006 …

Reconsidering Teacher Professional Development Through Constructivist Principles, Kathryn Kinnucan-Welsch Jan 2007

Reconsidering Teacher Professional Development Through Constructivist Principles, Kathryn Kinnucan-Welsch

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Constructivism has been discussed from multiple perspectives, including philosophical, psychological, social, and educational. These perspectives, of course, overlap when we shape what we do in the day-to-day realities of teaching and learning. The perspective that I bring to this chapter describing the professional development of teachers is that constructivism is a theory of learning that suggests that individuals make meaning of the world through an ongoing interaction between what they already know and believe and what they experience. In other words, learners actively construct knowledge through interactions in the environment as individuals and as members of groups.

It is from …

Becoming A Reflective Practitioner: A Classroom-Based Research On Mentor Work With A Novice Teacher In Tuzla Canton, Bosnia And Herzegovina, Dijana Markovic

MA TESOL Collection

The small post-war former socialist country of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been under constant reform in each area of its existence for the last ten years now. The reforms concerning the education system have been of the greatest interest for me, an educator who truly believes the future of every country depends on tolerance, open-mindedness and the absence of prejudice. These three basic principles of a successful democratic society are best acquired through competent teaching in the classroom. Sharing my teaching experience and helping novice teachers develop their own knowledge, awareness, skills and attitudes has not only helped the growth …

Experiential Learning And Reflective Practice In Teacher Education, Joshua Kurzweil Jan 2007

Experiential Learning And Reflective Practice In Teacher Education, Joshua Kurzweil

MA TESOL Collection

This paper explores ways of incorporating reflective practice and experiential learning in teacher education. Many examples are drawn from the book Understanding Teaching Through Learning (Kurzweil and Scholl 2007), the first in the series of teacher education books called School for International Training Frameworks for Language Teaching. These examples illustrate ways in which teacher educators can support rich meaningful learning experiences. Specifically, I look at the impact of reflective practice as outlined by Dewey (1910) and Rogers (2002), the variety of experiences that can be used in teacher education, and how ideas from experts in the field can be incorporated …

Plagiarism detection tools undermine academic integrity when they ignore student copyright protections, contribute to a vendor’s unauthorized commercial gains, fail to detect many forms of plagiarism, and require instructors to do the real detection. By becoming aware of these realities and possibilities, instructors can develop more effective strategies to reduce plagiarism while simultaneously enhancing students’ academic performance.
