Economics Of Maple Syrup Production In Kentucky, Bobby Thapa
Economics Of Maple Syrup Production In Kentucky, Bobby Thapa
Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources
Maple syrup production is traditionally associated with New England regions in the United States, but there is growing interest in expanding it to other regions with suitable environmental conditions, including Kentucky. This study presents an in-depth analysis of the potential production and economic impacts of maple syrup in Kentucky using a multi-method approach. First, the study applies a stochastic production model to assess the effects of climatic and tree variables on maple syrup yield. The results reveal that several variables, including the number of maple trees, taps, temperatures, tapping season length, and time, significantly affect maple syrup yield. Second, input-output …
Knowledge Discovery On The Integrative Analysis Of Electrical And Mechanical Dyssynchrony To Improve Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, Zhuo He
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a standard method of treating heart failure by coordinating the function of the left and right ventricles. However, up to 40% of CRT recipients do not experience clinical symptoms or cardiac function improvements. The main reasons for CRT non-response include: (1) suboptimal patient selection based on electrical dyssynchrony measured by electrocardiogram (ECG) in current guidelines; (2) mechanical dyssynchrony has been shown to be effective but has not been fully explored; and (3) inappropriate placement of the CRT left ventricular (LV) lead in a significant number of patients.
In terms of mechanical dyssynchrony, we utilize an …
Statistical Methods For Gene Selection And Genetic Association Studies, Xuewei Cao
Statistical Methods For Gene Selection And Genetic Association Studies, Xuewei Cao
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This dissertation includes five Chapters. A brief description of each chapter is organized as follows.
In Chapter One, we propose a signed bipartite genotype and phenotype network (GPN) by linking phenotypes and genotypes based on the statistical associations. It provides a new insight to investigate the genetic architecture among multiple correlated phenotypes and explore where phenotypes might be related at a higher level of cellular and organismal organization. We show that multiple phenotypes association studies by considering the proposed network are improved by incorporating the genetic information into the phenotype clustering.
In Chapter Two, we first illustrate the proposed GPN …
Evaluating Ai Sentiment Analysis, Aakriti Shah
Evaluating Ai Sentiment Analysis, Aakriti Shah
Honors Program Theses
This paper presents a comparative analysis of human and AI performance on a sentiment analysis task involving the coding of qualitative data from community program transcripts. The results demonstrate promising but imperfect agreement between two AI models, Claude and Bing, versus three human annotators and one expert annotator using the Community Capitals framework categories. While both models achieved fair alignment with human judgment, confusion patterns emerged involving metaphorical language and text overlapping multiple categories. The findings provide a case study for benchmarking conversational AI systems against human baselines to reveal limitations and target improvements. Key gaps center around distinguishing between …

Beginner's Analysis Of Financial Stochastic Process Models, David Garcia
HMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores the use of geometric Brownian motion (GBM) as a financial model for predicting stock prices. The model is first introduced and its assumptions and limitations are discussed. Then, it is shown how to simulate GBM in order to predict stock price values. The performance of the GBM model is then evaluated in two different periods of time to determine whether it's accuracy has changed before and after March 23, 2020.
A Method For Quantifying Individual Decision Thresholds Of Latent Print Examiners, Amanda Luby
A Method For Quantifying Individual Decision Thresholds Of Latent Print Examiners, Amanda Luby
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
In recent years, ‘black box’ studies in forensic science have emerged as the preferred way to provide information about the overall validity of forensic disciplines in practice. These studies provide aggregated error rates over many examiners and comparisons, but errors are not equally likely on all comparisons. Furthermore, inconclusive responses are common and vary across examiners and comparisons, but do not fit neatly into the error rate framework. This work introduces Item Response Theory (IRT) and variants for the forensic setting to account for these two issues. In the IRT framework, participant proficiency and item difficulty are estimated directly from …
An Exploration Of Parameter Duality In Statistical Inference, Suzanne Thornton, M. Xie
An Exploration Of Parameter Duality In Statistical Inference, Suzanne Thornton, M. Xie
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
Well-known debates among statistical inferential paradigms emerge from conflicting views on the notion of probability. One dominant view understands probability as a representation of sampling variability; another prominent view understands probability as a measure of belief. The former generally describes model parameters as fixed values, in contrast to the latter. We propose that there are actually two versions of a parameter within both paradigms: a fixed unknown value that generated the data and a random version to describe the uncertainty in estimating the unknown value. An inferential approach based on CDs deciphers seemingly conflicting perspectives on parameters and probabilities.

Rapid early progression (REP) has been defined as increased nodular enhancement at the border of the resection cavity, the appearance of new lesions outside the resection cavity, or increased enhancement of the residual disease after surgery and before radiation. Patients with REP have worse survival compared to patients without REP (non-REP). Therefore, a reliable method for differentiating REP from non-REP is hypothesized to assist in personlized treatment planning. A potential approach is to use the radiomics and fractal texture features extracted from brain tumors to characterize morphological and physiological properties. We propose a random sampling-based ensemble classification model. The proposed …
Enhancing Control Room Operator Decision Making: An Application Of Dynamic Influence Diagrams In Formaldehyde Manufacturing, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders L. Madsen
Enhancing Control Room Operator Decision Making: An Application Of Dynamic Influence Diagrams In Formaldehyde Manufacturing, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders L. Madsen
Articles
Intoday’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, control room operators must grapple with an ever-growing array of tasks and respon sibilities. One major challenge facing these operators is the potential for task overload, which can lead to decision fatigue and increased reliance on cognitive biases. To address this issue, we propose the use of dynamic influence diagrams (DID) as the core of our decision support system. By monitoring the process over time and identifying anomalies, DIDs can recommend the most effective course of action based on a probabilistic assessment of future outcomes. Instead of letting the operator choose or search for the …
Novel Feature Evaluation In Ultra-High Dimensional Right-Censored Data, With Applications To Head And Neck Cancer, Atika Farzana Urmi
Novel Feature Evaluation In Ultra-High Dimensional Right-Censored Data, With Applications To Head And Neck Cancer, Atika Farzana Urmi
Graduate Research Posters
Background: Head and neck cancer is the 6th most common cancer worldwide with an expected 1.08 million new cases each year. Such cancer data are ultra-high dimensional with thousands of clinical features and gene expressions, making it challenging for the traditional analytical tools to extract the potential biomarker for the cancer survival and control false discoveries. In addition, presence of heavy censoring can affect the screening procedures based on Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival estimates.
Aim: To propose a model free, ultra-high dimensional feature screening method with two-dimensional survival outcome allowing false discovery rate (FDR) control.
Method: 516 primary tumor patients with …
Odd Solutions To Systems Of Inequalities Coming From Regular Chain Groups, Daniel Slilaty
Odd Solutions To Systems Of Inequalities Coming From Regular Chain Groups, Daniel Slilaty
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Hoffman’s theorem on feasible circulations and Ghouila-Houry’s theorem on feasible tensions are classical results of graph theory. Camion generalized these results to systems of inequalities over regular chain groups. An analogue of Camion’s result is proved in which solutions can be forced to be odd valued. The obtained result also generalizes the results of Pretzel and Youngs as well as Slilaty. It is also shown how Ghouila-Houry’s result can be used to give a new proof of the graph- coloring theorem of Minty and Vitaver.

The Impact Of Subjective Risk Analysis On Real Estate Prices In The Nisqually Region Following The 2001 Nisqually Earthquake, Ryan Espedal
All Master's Theses
Earthquakes are an environmental hazard that pose great risks to communities almost every day. With earthquakes, the main cause of concern is physical destruction of property, however, there are also psychological effects that are researched and discussed much less. In 2001, the Nisqually area of western Washington experienced a substantial earthquake that produced minimal physical damage but caused a significant decrease in real estate prices. Studying single-family homes from 1986-2012, this research utilizes hedonic property models to measure the change in consumer’s subjective risk calculations with reference to real estate purchases after the Nisqually earthquake, measure the relationship between earthquake …

Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney Effects For Clustered Data: Informative Cluster Size, Changrui Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
In recent research, there has been a growing interest in understanding the impact of informative cluster size (ICS) on statistical inference for clustered data. In the non-parametric context, the problem for testing equality of distribution functions has been the main consideration. We are aiming to develop inferential procedures for the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney effect, also known as the non-parametric relative effect, involving two or more groups. Computationally, results from both simulated and real-world data have shown promising results that our proposed tests effectively account for ICS and they particularly outperform other methods in the literature designed for ignorable cluster sizes. The applications …
An Assessment Of "Long-Thin" Airline Routes: Network Structure And Emissions Implications For Environmental Policy, Porter Burns
An Assessment Of "Long-Thin" Airline Routes: Network Structure And Emissions Implications For Environmental Policy, Porter Burns
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this research was to define, map, and quantify the network and environmental implications of “long-thin” routes (LTRs) – a route structure that has been discussed in the aviation industry but not formally studied in literature. LTRs were defined through the use of global OAG scheduling data from 1998 to 2018 to identify trends in air traffic growth and network dynamics. Flights were separated into seven aircraft class sizes (e.g., 75–150 seats, 150–225 seats) to measure LTRs at multiple scales. Routes were considered “long” if the stage length was at or above the 75th percentile in each …
Expectile Neural Networks For Genetic Data Analysis Of Complex Diseases, Jinghang Lin, Xiaoran Tong, Chenxi Li, Qing Lu
Expectile Neural Networks For Genetic Data Analysis Of Complex Diseases, Jinghang Lin, Xiaoran Tong, Chenxi Li, Qing Lu
Biostatistics Faculty Publications
The genetic etiologies of common diseases are highly complex and heterogeneous. Classic methods, such as linear regression, have successfully identified numerous variants associated with complex diseases. Nonetheless, for most diseases, the identified variants only account for a small proportion of heritability. Challenges remain to discover additional variants contributing to complex diseases. Expectile regression is a generalization of linear regression and provides complete information on the conditional distribution of a phenotype of interest. While expectile regression has many nice properties, it has rarely been used in genetic research. In this paper, we develop an expectile neural network (ENN) method for genetic …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A compound flooding event occurs when there is a combination of two or more extreme factors that happen simultaneously or in quick succession and can lead to flooding. In the Great Lakes region, it is common for a compound flooding event to occur with a high lake water level and heavy rainfall. With the potential of increasing water levels and an increase in precipitation under climate change, the Great Lakes coastal regions could be at risk for more frequent and severe flooding. The City of Chicago which is located on Lake Michigan has a high population and dense infrastructure and …
Bayesian Structural Time Series Methods For Modeling Cattle Body Temperature In Heat-Stressed Animals, Lacey Quandt
Bayesian Structural Time Series Methods For Modeling Cattle Body Temperature In Heat-Stressed Animals, Lacey Quandt
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Climate change has had devastating effects globally, most commonly talked about during natural disasters and rising temperatures. Notably, the climate concern is turning towards agriculture and livestock. With rising temperatures, the prolonged amount of heat stress put on animals, specifically cattle, is becoming more apparent. Heat stress has been linked to a reduction in cattle growing and fattening, feed intake, productivity, reproduction, and fertility; increased heart rates and respiration; changes in behavior; and mortality in severe cases. There are abatement strategies put in place to lower heat stress in cattle, such as improvements in shading and cooling, nutritional management, and …
The Influence Of Instrumental Sources Of Variance On Mass Spectral Comparison Algorithms, Isabel Cristina Galvez Valencia
The Influence Of Instrumental Sources Of Variance On Mass Spectral Comparison Algorithms, Isabel Cristina Galvez Valencia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current search algorithms for the identification of substances based only on their electron ionization mass spectra provide the correct compound as their top result approximately 80% of the time. One contributing factor to the ~20% deviation in the first-hit recognition rate is that traditional algorithms work by comparing the unknown spectrum to an ‘ideal’ or consensus spectrum of each reference compound. The inclusion of replicate reference spectra in a database has been shown to improve the probability of ranking the correct identity in the number one position, but the variance in ion abundances caused by different conditions or different instruments …

The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess the associations between sample processing time and antibiotic resistance and is based on the health belief model. A retrospective specimen tracking activity of data from November 2019 to November 2020 was obtained by random sampling of 246 bacterial cultures. One hundred ninety-six (80%) samples were processed on time, and 50 (20%) were delayed; 167 (68%) samples were determined to have the presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and 79 (32%) with …
Automated Machine Learning: Intellient Binning Data Preparation And Regularized Regression Classfier, Jianbin Zhu
Automated Machine Learning: Intellient Binning Data Preparation And Regularized Regression Classfier, Jianbin Zhu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Automated machine learning (AutoML) has become a new trend which is the process of automating the complete pipeline from the raw dataset to the development of machine learning model. It not only can relief data scientists' works but also allows non-experts to finish the jobs without solid knowledge and understanding of statistical inference and machine learning. One limitation of AutoML framework is the data quality differs significantly batch by batch. Consequently, fitted model quality for some batches of data can be very poor due to distribution shift for some numerical predictors. In this dissertation, we develop an intelligent binning to …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Functional Data Analysis is often used in the study of data that exists over a continuum, such as time. There are two datasets that will be considered here. For the first study we have a dataset on the efficacy of a lobectomy in reduction or elimination of epileptic seizures in patients. After an initial analysis of the dataset from a multinomial model perspective, we found that there were outliers in our dataset. From there, we considered a Multinomial Mixture Model to aid in the detection of outliers. In our second dataset we are considering a social robotics dataset where the …

Modeling The Bidirectional Relationship Between Shared-Patient Physician Networks And Patient Longitudinal Treatment Patterns: Application To Physician Risky-Prescribing, Xin Ran
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Risky-prescribing is a pressing public health concern in the United States. Opioids, benzodiazepines, and non-benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotics (sedative-hypnotics) are three commonly-prescribed but potentially risky drug groups, prescribed alone or in combination. Physician shared-patient networks provide a unique perspective in studying physician network characteristics and structures, as well as their association with the delivery of health care. Understanding how physician shared-patient networks are related to their prescribing may inform network-based interventions targeting risky-prescribing, which is yet to be fully studied.
We investigated patient receipt of risky prescriptions and physician risky-prescribing intensity through the scope of shared-patient networks. We used retrospective Medicare insurance …
