Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs, Yaw-Tarng Shih May 1969

Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs, Yaw-Tarng Shih

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In balanced incomplete block designs, each pair of treatments is compared with equal precision, and each treatment is paired with every other treatment an equal number of times with in a common block; A is a constant for all treatments. There is one associate class for each treatment in balanced incomplete block designs. These are the most important balanced incomplete block designs, but the need sometimes arises for others; either because no suitable balanced incomplete block design exists, or because, for example, it is necessary to make some comparisons more precisely than others. We can see balanced incomplete block designs …

Computer Programs For Incomplete Block Designs, Fred Miller May 1969

Computer Programs For Incomplete Block Designs, Fred Miller

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In most disciplines where research is involved, there exists an occasional problem of having minimal facilities and/or funds for conducting experiments. This often necessitates the use of designs known as incomplete block designs.

Since the calculations needed to provide an appropriate statistical analysis are somewhat tedious, particularJ..y in the larger designs, it is advantageous to have computer programs to do the necessary calculations.

There are several computer programs at Utah State University written in Fortran II language with Forcom subroutines that perform the analyses for incomplete block designs. These programs, for the most part, were authored by Justus Seely and …

A Study Of The Exponential Distirbutions And Their Applications, Michael Chang-Yu Wang May 1969

A Study Of The Exponential Distirbutions And Their Applications, Michael Chang-Yu Wang

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The exponential distribution is a widely known distribution i n statistical theory. It can be regarded as the continuous analogue of the Poisson distribution, discussed by S. D. Poisson in 1837. The Poisson is a limiting form of the Binomial distribution which can be t race d back as early as 1700, discussed by James Bernoulli. A paper by Marsden and Barratt (1911) on the radioactive disintegration of thorium gives a typical frequency distribution which follows the exponential law (8, p. 89). The exponential distribution has achieved importance recently in connection with the theory of stochastic process and has found …

Analysis Of Contingency Tables, James Joseph Biundo May 1969

Analysis Of Contingency Tables, James Joseph Biundo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two methods of analyzing multi-dimensional frequency data are detailed.

The Second Order Exponential (SOE) model is applicable for dichotomous classifications. The distribution has two sets of parameters, ϴi's and ϴj's. The ϴi's are interpreted as the log of the odds of the marginal probabilities if no two factor relationships exist. Or if all ϴij are not zero, then the ϴi's are analogous to a main effect in a 2m factorial analysis, (m = number of factors or classifications). The ϴif's may be interpreted as a measure and direction …

Generation Of Random Numbers, Keith H. Eberhard May 1969

Generation Of Random Numbers, Keith H. Eberhard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Subroutines are written to generate random numbers on the computer. Depending on the subroutine used, the generated random numbers follow the uniform, binomial, normal, chi-square, t, F, or gamma distribution. Each subroutine is tested using the chi-square goodness of fit test to verify that the random numbers generated by each subroutine follow the statistical distribution for which it is written. The interpretation of the test results indicates that each subroutine generates random numbers which closely approximates the theoretical distribution for which it is designed.

The approach used in the subroutine which generates gamma distributed random numbers involves the use of …

Simulating Regional Interindustry Models For Western States, William A. Schaffer, Kong Chu Jan 1969

Simulating Regional Interindustry Models For Western States, William A. Schaffer, Kong Chu

Applications

Although regional input-output models are now most frequently constructed on the basis of reasonably adequate surveys, simulation (estimating) techniques not based on original survey data are still in use by many regional scientists for quick and less costly results. We will modify our original aggregation procedures, examine our results through several statistical tests of tables constructed for three Western states, and discuss a possible correction procedure for improving raw estimates of interindustry transactions.

Formally Real Fields, Gail L. Carns Aug 1968

Formally Real Fields, Gail L. Carns

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This paper is concerned with the analysis of the set of orders on a formally real field using category and sheaf theory as tools. We topologize the set of orders in a way similar to that used in the prime spectrum of algebraic geometry and define a presheaf of groups using the notion of inverse limits. We then find necessary and sufficient conditions that these presheaves be sheaves. Next we notice that if F ⊆ Fi respectively, fields, θ and θi are the set of orders on F and Fi respectively, and Γ and Γi are …

An Instructional Method For Self-Administered Medications, Beryl Marx, Lorene Russell Aug 1968

An Instructional Method For Self-Administered Medications, Beryl Marx, Lorene Russell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An experimental study was done to determine the effectiveness of an instructional method for older ambulatory patients taking prescribed self-administered medications. This method was developed to emphasize the physicians' specific orders, the purpose of medications, feedback of instruction and a plan for remembering and recording medications. The hypothesis tested was that a selected group of ambulatory patients age 60 and over with the instructional method would make significantly fewer errors than a similar control group with no instructions.

Sixty private patients from the Loma Linda University Hospital outpatient department were selected and randomly placed in the experimental and control groups. …

Masseter Muscle Position Relative To Skeletal Open Bite And Skeletal Closed Bite, Alonzo David Proctor Jun 1968

Masseter Muscle Position Relative To Skeletal Open Bite And Skeletal Closed Bite, Alonzo David Proctor

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Modification of cephalometric roentgenographic procedures provided a means to identify the anterior borders of the right and left masseter muscles and relate them to surrounding dentoskeletal elements. Attachment of short, stiff, wires to the cheeks in a position superficial to the anterior borders of the muscles, subsequent to palpation and prior to exposure of the roentgenographic film, was the procedure used. The bi-lateral images projected on the film were averaged and traced along with dentoskeletal elements including those associated with skeletal type. This line representing the anterior border of the musculature was used to assess muscle position in the vertical …

A Study Of Alveolar Bone Loss And Two-Hour Postprandial Blood Sugar Levels, R. Leslie Arnett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Two-hour postprandial blood sugar determinations were carried out on 500 patients referred for periodontal care. The mean percentage of alveolar bone loss around the mandibular bicuspid teeth was established for each individual. The subjects were then grouped according to blood sugar levels and the mean alveolar bone loss was calculated. The group was separated into male and female sub-groups and data was computed for these segments as well as the total sample. The data was evaluated in a similar manner for those subjects between 40 and 49 years of age.

No Chi-square determinations were statistically significant but significance in differences …

Functional Relationships For Fredholm Integral Equations Arising From Pseudo-Transport Problems., Richard Crenshaw Allen Jr. May 1968

Functional Relationships For Fredholm Integral Equations Arising From Pseudo-Transport Problems., Richard Crenshaw Allen Jr.

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this dissertation we consider a class of integral equations of the general form

Ψ(z)=g(z) + ∫yx Y(z’)K(|z-z’|) Ψ(z’)dz’

Where K has an integral representation of the type

K(u)= ∫0∞ k(s’)e-a(s’)uds’

With this integral equation, we associate the pseudo transport problem

(sgn s) ∂/∂z N(z,s) + a(s)N(z,s) = k(s)Y(z) ∫-∞∞ N(z,s’)ds’,

Y< =z< =x, |s| < ∞

with certain boundary conditions. (Equation (2) is a generalization or the equation for particle transport in a slab geometry). Equivalence between the problems (1) and (2) is established. Thus any results concerning the problem (2) produce corresponding results concerning the …

Computer Analysis Of Consumer Attitude And Consumption Data For Fluid Milk Products, James Reed Fisher May 1968

Computer Analysis Of Consumer Attitude And Consumption Data For Fluid Milk Products, James Reed Fisher

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The American public, with a per capita disposable income currently at an all time high, has become a source of vital concern to dairy market researchers. The unique socio-economic structure of the present generation causes the dairy industry to be concerned with how the consumer view its products. Effective education and advertising programs must be developed to attract the taste and meet the demands of the consumer.

Two factors which greatly influence market research and advertising programs are the attitude of the consumer toward a given product and the relationship of attitude to the degree of actual milk consumption. To …

The Relationship Of Church Activity Of Parents Of Lds Seminary Students To The Attendance Of Seminary Students At Church, Ronald D. Firth Jan 1968

The Relationship Of Church Activity Of Parents Of Lds Seminary Students To The Attendance Of Seminary Students At Church, Ronald D. Firth

Theses and Dissertations

It has been observed that not all L.D.S. Seminary students are active in church attendance. There is little doubt in the minds of educators that parents affect a great deal the activities of their children.

The purpose of the study was to learn what relationship, if any, existed between a seminary student's church attendance and the church activities of his parents, and to find out which, if any, of five specific areas of parental church activity had the most positive effect on a student's church attendance.

Based on his experience in the church, the writer chose the following areas of …

An Examination Of The Romberg Method For Numerical Integration, Water James Halpin Nov 1967

An Examination Of The Romberg Method For Numerical Integration, Water James Halpin

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

INTRODUCTION

This paper will amount to an inquiry into the mathematical structure and properties of a matrix of approximate integration formulas due to Werner Romberg 1 which have found considerable favor in numerical analysis during the past decade. Like other devices for approximate integration the Romberg method has its origin in the exhaustion techniques developed by the Greeks for determining the areas of figures enclosed by lines in the plane. It is particularly closely associated with the scheme employed by Archimedes2 (circa 250 B.C.) for approximating the value of [3.14]. This involves a doubling process which is essentially the basis …

On Some Categories Of Partially Ordered Sets With Residuated Mappings, Gary D. Crown

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Croisot [1] was apparently first to examine some of the properties of residuated mappings. It is the purpose of this paper to show that certain constructions currently useful in homological algebra can be made in a suitable category of partially ordered sets with residuated mappings. In Section 1 we note some elementary properties of residuated mappings all of which are well known cf. Janowitz [4]. In Section 2 we notice some properties of various categories of partially ordered sets with residuated mappings. In Section 3 we prove that the category of complete lattices with residuated mappings has enough injectives and …
