Journal of Social Sciences

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Residential eviction cases can be filed in two court types in Oregon, circuit courts and justice courts. Up until now, statewide research on evictions has only included filings in circuit courts, because those court records are accessible through a centralized online database run by the judicial department. Eviction cases can be filed in fourteen justice courts in Oregon. Because each justice court maintains their court’s records onsite, these eviction cases have previously been invisible to researchers and policymakers. This study reports the first-ever full accounting of the number of eviction cases filed in Oregon, including cases filed in both court …

Exploring The Factors That Influence Female Offending In The U.S. And Mexico, Dana Villasenor

CMC Senior Theses

Hollywood has painted a picture of the criminal woman as a sexy, sneaky, and often psychotic female fatale. This is because men run Hollywood. Much like movies, research on why women offend had historically focused on men as their stellar. However, towards the turn of the century and with the disproportionate rise in female incarceration, literature caught up to the fact that women and men do not experience the same socialization, standards, or reality and, therefore, have different reasons for and ways of offending. This research explores those reasons for women in the U.S. and Mexico and paints the picture …

Police Flight Oversight: Lapd Drone As First Responder Implementation, Nathaniel Worley

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the feasibility of implementing a Drone as First Responder (DFR) program within the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), analyzing the operational, social, and financial implications compared to traditional police helicopter usage. The thesis investigates helicopter flight patterns, demographic correlations, and the potential for drones to provide a less invasive and more cost-effective aerial support system. Key findings include the use of incorrect identifying hex codes by LAPD helicopters, suggesting potential transparency issues in aerial operations. The thesis recommends DFR due to substantial cost savings and enhanced surveillance transparency and asserts that a DFR program can mitigate negative …

While many researchers have explored the benefits of diversity on innovation and output quality, there is a lack of research that has been done on impact of diversity in teams on outcomes on the personal level. This paper investigates the relationship between social identity and the ease of collaborative work processes. I use an experiment to test hypotheses on the preference of partners and best performing pairing. With the use of a website designed my Jeffery Flory, Brent Hickman, John A. List, Amamnda Pallais, and Jessie Sun, 30 participants were randomly paired in teams of two to virtually collaborate is …

Speaking To Maryland’S Eastern Shore: Lessons For Candidates Looking To Earn The Watermen Vote, Maryum Khwaja

CMC Senior Theses

One of the thirteen original states, Maryland is located on the East Coast. It consists of two main sections that are separated by the Chesapeake Bay: the Eastern Shore, which is east of the Chesapeake, and mainland Maryland, west of the Chesapeake. As a whole, Maryland is a blue state. The East Shore is different: it has Republican House member, Andy Harris, and holds different values from the rest of the state, and it votes differently, too. In the 2020 election, Biden won the statewide vote 65-32 percent – but Trump carried Harris’s district 56-42 percent.

Improving Screening For Intimate Partner Violence Amongst Older Adults, Olivia Bell

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This systematic literature review was conducted to gather a better understanding of screening for intimate partner violence (IPV) among older adults. IPV affects millions of people every year. Many screenings are conducted with women of reproductive age in medical settings, not older adults. This study focused on ways to improve screenings for older adults by addressing topics including elder abuse and IPV and the lack of resources/knowledge for IPV survivors who are older adults. This study was a literature review conducted with the University of Central Florida’s PRIMO database to find articles on IPV among older adults over the last …

Background: Manganese (Mn) is a metal commonly found in drinking water, but the level that is safe for consumption is unknown. In the United States (U.S.), Mn is not regulated in drinking water and data on water Mn concentrations are temporally and spatially sparse. Objective: Examine temporal and spatial variability of Mn concentrations in repeated tap water samples in a case study of Holliston, Massachusetts (MA), U.S., where drinking water is pumped from shallow aquifers that are vulnerable to Mn contamination. Methods: We collected 79 residential tap water samples from 21 households between September 2018 and December 2019. Mn concentrations …

Not Just A Simple Survey: A Case Study Of Pitfalls In Interdisciplinary, Multiorganizational, Multinational Research For Development, Fleur B.M. Kilwinger, Cynthia Caron, Anne M. Reitveld, Ynte K. Van Dam

Sustainability and Social Justice

Surveys are common research methods in agricultural research for development. Despite the multitude of well-documented warnings for pitfalls in survey research, it appears challenging to avoid these in practice. We use a case study in agricultural research for development to illustrate what complicates survey research within an interdisciplinary, multiorganizational and multinational team. The survey research process, rather than the survey outcome, is our object of study. Using the Methodology of Interdisciplinary Research (MIR) framework we identify different steps within survey research. We overlay a technographic lens to understand “the making of a survey”. Sustainability and Social Justice

Finding pathways to more sustainable agriculture and resource use remains the most pressing challenge for Amazonian countries. Characterizing recent changes in the structure and types of agrarian production systems, this review identifies responses to deal with the challenges and opportunities to promote more sustainable production and extraction economies in the Amazon. While regional agriculture and resource economies rest on a rich diversity of producers, knowledge, and production systems, the expansion of agribusiness enterprises has come to dominate the distribution of subsidies, institutional support, and logistical infrastructure. These trends are associated with forest loss and degradation, pollution of waterways, pressures on …

Growing rates of childhood obesity globally create concern for individuals' health outcomes and demands on health systems. While many policy approaches focus on macro-level interventions, we examine how the type of stability of a family structure might provide opportunities for policy interventions at the micro level. We examine the association between family structure trajectories and childhood overweight and obesity across three Anglophone countries using an expanded set of eight family structure categories that capture biological relationships and instability, along with potential explanatory variables that might vary across family trajectories and provide opportunities for intervention, including access to resources, family stressors, …

Effects Of Dehumanization And Disgust-Eliciting Language On Attitudes Toward Immigration: A Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data, Katherine S. Wahrer, Cynthia J. Najdowski, John V. Passarelli Jan 2024

Effects Of Dehumanization And Disgust-Eliciting Language On Attitudes Toward Immigration: A Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data, Katherine S. Wahrer, Cynthia J. Najdowski, John V. Passarelli

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Attitudes towards immigration have been shown to be driven by dehumanization and disgust. The more people dehumanize immigrants and the more disgusted they feel, the more negative attitudes they tend to have toward immigrants. However, little is known about how exposure to social media content that links dehumanization, disgust, and immigration influences users’ attitudes on this issue. This is important to consider because the majority of adults in the United States are on social media. We used Twitter data, machine learning, and sentiment analysis to investigate whether exposure to dehumanizing or disgust-eliciting tweets about immigration impacts users’ own sentiment toward …

Labor unions in the United States have experienced decades of decline, but recent years have seen a rebirth of union campaigns and successes. Because unions are once again becoming a threat to large companies, it is reasonable to assume that efforts to discourage organizing efforts will increase and become even more robust in the near future. Although traditionally, companies have worked to suspend union organizing through captive audience meetings in which unions were discussed via verbal or written modes, more recent means of reaching workers with anti-union messages incorporate a variety of communication strategies to get the message across. As …

Corporate Law As Decolonization, Martin W. Sybblis Jan 2024

Corporate Law As Decolonization, Martin W. Sybblis

Faculty Articles

After centuries of colonial subordination, Black and Brown former colonies are still fighting to achieve the fruits of decolonization. The traditional theory is that former colonies will emerge from the colonial period with the legal mandate and international recognition needed to chart their own futures. But, for those Black and Brown British colonies that achieved political independence, it became clear that, without economic strength to care for their societies, legal separation could not deliver on its promise of freedom from subordination. This Article argues that investments in corporate law innovations by some jurisdictions, such as Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, …

Learning Law In Elementary And High School: Innovating Civics Education For A More Empowered Citizenry, Ariel J. Liberman, Michael J. Broyde

A principal objective of the public school system in a democracy is to promote societal cohesion by way of preparing students for civic engagement. There exists a founding belief that a democratic nation ought to be composed of educated activists, run by innovators, and kept in check by involved citizens. For, indisputably, the democratic experiment—our values, our institutions—can only be upheld anew with each generation on the backs of critique, reinvention, and reinvigoration. But, as so many have mentioned when discussing the civics education paradigm, the increase in educational opportunities and the marked expansion of our school system has not …

Law In Inaction: The Origins And Implications Of Chronic Drug Law Underenforcement In One Southern County, Kay L. Levine, Elizabeth Griffiths, Joshua M. Hinkle, Volkan Topalli

Common accounts of police and prosecutorial nonenforcement discretion tend to valorize individual declination choices as demonstrations of mercy and resource constraint. Simultaneously, these accounts critique blanket nonenforcement policies as being outside the bounds of executive authority. Both accounts fail to consider the origins and implications of nonenforcement decisions made by police officers and prosecutors in individual cases that, when taken together, amount to significant underenforcement of an otherwise valid law.

This Article fills the gap between these differing perspectives by empirically examining the hidden and habitual underenforcement of technically valid drug-free-zone (DFZ) laws in one Southern county. Data matching the …

Access Of Thai Language And The Social Integration Of Shan Migrants In Chiang Mai, Thailand, Nan Tharaphi Aye Lwin

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis examines how access to Thai language education influences the social integration of Shan migrants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Grounded in the 4A Rights-Based Framework (Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, Adaptability) and Bosswick and Heckmann’s social integration model, the study employs a primarily qualitative approach complemented with mini survey data, migrant case studies, and key informant interviews with educators and CSO leaders. Findings reveal that no single program fully embodies all four components of the 4A Framework. CSO-led programs tend to offer more culturally responsive, flexible, and beginner-friendly learning environments, while formal state-run programs often require prior literacy and are less …

The Struggle For Educationamong Somali Refugees In Bangkok, Kochaporn Tohsa

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The study investigates the multifaceted barriers – legal, institution, social and cultural – hindering Somali refugee children in accessing education in Bangkok, Thailand. Rooted in prolonged political instability and economic constraints in Somalia, which has forced thousands of families to flee their homes throughout Southeast Asia, the study situates the struggles of Somali refugee children within the context of Bangkok’s urban refugee setting. Thailand is home to a large number of undocumented migrants, including a small but growing number of Somali refugee families, despite not being a signatory state to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol. These refugee …
