Our Challenge And Our Opportunity, Coleman Burke

The other day you probably all read of the death of Gavin Maxwell, who produced that delightful "Ring of Bright Water." He said, "Stage one on the way to understanding human beings is an understanding and affection for animals." Fit this in with the statement from Proverbs. Actually, Gavin Maxwell was more intrigued in his life by animals than by people. And I know there are others here who are. And I accept that. I'm not critical of it. I rejoice that there are people who are more intrigued with animals than with people.
But I have a very deep …
Protection Of Wildlife, Leonard Hall
Protection Of Wildlife, Leonard Hall

There seems to be, and I'm sure it is true with all of you, a feeling that the time has come when we must expand our area of concern to include wild birds and animals, as well as the domestic animals and pets which are part of our interest today.
On the basis of this assumption, I'd like to cover the following points in my discussion. First, all those sound and logical reasons to include a broad interest in wildlife in the program of the humane society. Second, some specific areas and problems that might engage our interest and action. …

Extension Of Community Programs For Animal Protection, Milton B. Learner

My discussion today will cover the development and extension_ of humane activities at the state and local levels. This will include the work of a state federation, a comparison between federations and HSUS branches, and the cooperation in national programs by both-while extending such activities to the grassroots local societies. Whatever authority this speaker can muster on these subjects has been gained essentially, it must be remembered, during his tenure as President of the Indiana Federation of Humane Societies.
A state federation of humane societies is quite impressive in nomenclature. It implies united action, resulting in the exercise of power …
The Humane Movement And The Survival Of All Living Things, Roger Caras
The Humane Movement And The Survival Of All Living Things, Roger Caras
Conservation Collection
Conservation and the humane movement are Siamese twins. They are inseparable. I beg you to keep this in mind, to think about this, because there is an explosion coming in the conservation movement. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, a great conservationist and humanitarian, is leading the fight now for a teach-in that is going to take place in colleges across this country early next year--early in 1970. Students and teachers are going to sit and talk about nothing but ecology and a crash program of awareness. We are heading for national and international catastrophe and it will soon be on …

A History Of Baptists In Clinton County, Timothy Cantrell
A History Of Baptists In Clinton County, Timothy Cantrell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study is to present some of the history of the Baptist Church in Clinton County, Kentucky. A detailed study of the early church in the county also presents a picture of the county's social history as well because of the very close association between the individual and his church.
The scope of this study does not lend itself to presentation of the individual histories of all the Baptist churches in the county. It is, rather, the purpose of the author to cover the history of Baptists in the county by tracing the history of their two …

A Study Of The Impact Of Three Films Upon Lds College Students' Acceptance Of Certain Patterns Of Affection, William R. Cunningham
A Study Of The Impact Of Three Films Upon Lds College Students' Acceptance Of Certain Patterns Of Affection, William R. Cunningham
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to try to measure the perceived effect of three films upon L. D. S. college student's attitudes toward premarital affection immediately after viewing each film and over a time interval of three to four weeks. The sample consisted of seven health classes (180 males and 195 females in total) in the Department of Health Education at the Brigham Young University. A questionnaire was devised by the investigator and used as the instrument to determine the student's perceived attitudes toward premarital affection.
The students evidenced significance change in the conservative direction only after viewing the …
An Early History Of The Community Of Park City, Utah, Oscar F. Jesperson Jr.
An Early History Of The Community Of Park City, Utah, Oscar F. Jesperson Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Park City, Utah, has been one of the most permanent mining camps in Utah. While constituting the industrial and population center of Summit County, it has contributed over one half billions dollars to the economies of Utah and the nation. This thesis deals with the early years of Park City, 1869-1910. This period saw an influx and combination of several ethnic groups which served to enrich the cultural history of Park City. Religion and social organizations were a major part of the life of this community. The political effect of this mining camp on Summit County and the Territory of …

Part I - Dr. Virgil S. Hollis
Developing the number of school administrators who are increasingly becoming interested in humaneness and the humane society members who are interested in education, I think, means that all of us must keep close touch with each other although we know very little of each other's field. This exposure to you and your programs in meetings such as this will surely result in a united attack on a mutual problem We need your help. And you need our help. You need help from the group that I represent in education because the many programs …
Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble
Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble
KWRRI Research Reports
Reservoirs are built to control floods, provide water for irrigation and municipal supply, generate electric power, augment low flows for navigation and water quality control, and provide improved fishing and recreation opportunity. A reservoir is justified if the benefit it provides to society exceeds the cost to develop it. Much research has been done to determine the benefit of a water resources development to society as a whole. Some research has explored the benefit of such a facility to a region. Very little research exists on the effects of a reservoir on the immediately surrounding area.
It seems reasonable that …

Fred Hampton, Illinois chairman of the Black Panther Party, is dead. So is Panther Mark Clark.
State's Attorney Edwin Hanrahan in a TV interview commended the officers who "bravely and with restraint" participated in the pre-dawn raid on Thursday December 4, when the shoot-out occurred.
Many in Chicago's black community and many whites are convinced that Hanrahan's men murdered Hampton as he slept.
Interlude Programs In U.S. Undergraduate Education, Terrence Cullinan
Interlude Programs In U.S. Undergraduate Education, Terrence Cullinan
Higher Education
A survey was undertaken in the spring of 1969, as part of the Interlude Research Program, to (a) determine the attitudes of U.S. undergraduate institutions towards incorporation of formal off-campus experiences (academic interludes) as part of their educational program; (b) learn something about the current extent of ongoing interlude programs; (c) indicate some of the parameters of the ongoing programs; and (d) discover how some of those concerned with ongoing programs on individual campuses rate their own programs. The survey, based on responses to a questionnaire sent to as many four-year undergraduate (college and university) institutions as could be identified, …
Some Class Perspectives On Magical Belief, Patricia Hartman
Some Class Perspectives On Magical Belief, Patricia Hartman
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A field survey was conducted in Cambridge, Minnesota, to study variation in Magical belief with respect to class differences, as measured by education. Groups of fifteen female noncollege graduates and 15 graduates, and fifteen male non-college graduates and 15 male graduates, constituted the survey groups. They were examined with self-administered questionnaires constructed for the survey and shown to be reliable and valid in pre-tests.
Survey findings indicate there is no significant difference in degree of magical belief as measured in this questionnaire with regard lo class differences (education). Notable was the observation that college graduate males disagreed in significant percentage …
Migration And Social Status, D. Duane Braun
Migration And Social Status, D. Duane Braun
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
From previous studies of migration, it was hypothesized that those of higher social status, elites, tended to migrate in greater proportions than non-elites. Data taken from Who's Who In America and published census results for Minnesota indicated that this was, indeed, the case, but more so in 1940 than in 1959-1960. A sharp decline for elite in-migration to Minnesota took place in the 20-year period. Yet the rate of increase for Minnesota elites between 1940 and 1959 was much higher than the increase in population oi: the state. Minnesota is producing more of its own elites today than it did …
