Some Aspects Of Socio-Economic And Community Factors In Planning Urban Freeways, Kwame Annor

Publications

Urban freeways have many Impacts on their users and on the communities that they traverse or bypass. Consequently numerous interest groups become Involved in determining freeway locations. Decision makers at the state and federal levels must weigh monetary and non-monetary consequences as seen by the highway agency and, in addition, must consider the Interests and demands of other public bodies, organizations, and individuals, before reaching their decisions. A similar weighing must be applied by decision makers at the local level before they approve or object to proposed plans. Report On Honors Research: An Exploratory Study Of Puerto Ricans In Lorain, Ohio, Karen Beck Skold Jan 1970

Report On Honors Research: An Exploratory Study Of Puerto Ricans In Lorain, Ohio, Karen Beck Skold

Honors Papers

The Puerto Rican community in Lorain, Ohio dates from 1946, when the first 100 workers were imported by the steel company. Since that time the Latin community has grown to 10,000, comprising a proportionately large segment of the city's total population of approximately 75,000. Most studies of the adaptation of Puerto Rican migrants to life in the United States are based on New York City; to my knowledge the Lorain population has never been the subject of a systematic sociological investigation. Although "El Barrio" in New York is still the largest continental settlement of Puerto Ricans and remains a reference …

Home Missions And Tension-Management In The Christian Reformed Church, Brtel Nicholas Huizenga Jan 1970

Home Missions And Tension-Management In The Christian Reformed Church, Brtel Nicholas Huizenga

Sociology ETDs

The social norms and values of a church are often in conflict with the norms and values of the wider society. This study examines the processes of tension management and change within the Christian Reformed Church in response to its home mission activity.

The Christian Reformed Church is a confessional church highly resistant to change. In the past the church has minimized conflict through a pattern of geographical, social, and intellectual isolation. Since World War II, however, home mission activity has become institutionalized within the church and assumes increasing importance as a means for growth.

To assess the effect of …

A Comparison Of Leisure Theorists, Nancy Tobin Hornberger Jan 1970

A Comparison Of Leisure Theorists, Nancy Tobin Hornberger

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Social scientists express growing concern about man's capacity to achieve a state of existence greater than that of mere survival. "Popularizers" and writers of "social criticism" echo this concern. Obviously, because of scientific and technological changes, man's participation is needed less and less in the production of economic abundance. He is, therefore, to be free to engage in other pursuits. Awareness of this impending freedom challenges those intellectuals who wish to describe and to anticipate the direction and quality of man's total existence.
