May 4, 1970 was the date of the Kent State University campus shootings, where 4 anti-war protestors were shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard. RISD, as well as campuses across the U.S., shut down as students went on strike in protest of the Kent State killings. It is likely that the May 5 lecture was canceled and rescheduled for the fall [see October 20, 1970 poster for same lecture].

Madrona Movers: A Sociological Analysis Of A Work Group As A Process Of Harmony And Dissent, John Vance Cannucci May 1970

Madrona Movers: A Sociological Analysis Of A Work Group As A Process Of Harmony And Dissent, John Vance Cannucci

Dissertations and Theses

The research problem discussed in the thesis is generally concerned with the investigation of a group of men who work as furniture movers. The problem is focused on the dynamic interplay of status equality and status differentiation as contradictions that render harmony and dissension as common group denominators.

Three questions were asked. First, are there consistent ways of behaving while working as a furniture mover? Second, if consistent ways of behavior do exist, how are they related to the notions of status equality and status differentiation? Third, if this latter relationship should exist, can harmony and dissent be conceptualized as …

Factors Associated With Deviant Behavior At Intermountain School, Sonya Nesch Minock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The types and frequency of deviance, and the relationship between deviance and factors in the pre-Intermountain, Intermountain, and post-Intermountain experiences were studied using the male population of the 1964 graduating class at Intermountain School, Brigham City, Utah.

Among the important findings are the following. Of 233 total deviant acts, 84 were time schedule violations and 66 were drinking and drinking-related violations. The quantitative pattern of deviance was about the same during the sophomore and junior years and then decreased during the senior year. There was an inverse relationship between family size and deviance. The lowest average deviance rate occurred among …

Effects Of Sensori-Motor Reinforcement On Alphabet Letter Discrimination Tasks, Leona Magnus Peters May 1970

Effects Of Sensori-Motor Reinforcement On Alphabet Letter Discrimination Tasks, Leona Magnus Peters

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recent research studies indicate the importance of sensory input in the development of perceptual skills. Learning the alphabet, an abstract symbol system, is considered a perceptual task. The major purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of a visual experience reinforced by a sensori-motor experience in improving the ability of kindergarten pupils to perceive the configuration of alphabet letters and the order of these letters in a word.

Two separate kindergarten classes were selected as the experimental and control groups. The learning task was individualized through the use of each subject's own name.

Each subject in both groups …

Purpose was to collect and sample the attitudes of "blue collar" adolescents toward the employment of women and child rearing practices. Male Roles As Perceived By Children Of Employed And Non-Employed Mothers, Mary Jane Williams Swapp May 1970

Male Roles As Perceived By Children Of Employed And Non-Employed Mothers, Mary Jane Williams Swapp

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was done to determine whether maternal employment affected the child's perception of male roles. The study was designed to see if the child viewed the male in a more negative or positive way or if he perceived the male as taking more instrumental or expressive roles when the child's mother was employed. The hypotheses predicted that there would be no difference in the children's perceptions of male roles between mother-employed and mother-not-employed groups, and that there would also be no difference between the sexes on children's perceptions of male roles .

The questionnaire was designed with some parts …
