The Vanguard

In February of this year, the Federation of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (FELCSA) in Southern Africa held its fourth conference. The meeting was marked by sharp disagreement, according to a LCUSA news report, between white and black delegates over the question of declaring public support for the strong opposition of the black Lutherans to South Africa's apartheid policies.

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has designated LHRAA as recipient of a $4700 grant in support of developing a regional thrust to respond to problems of racism at local level. The amount was allocated from a special item authorized by the 1971 Milwaukee Convention of the Synod when a resolution was passed calling for a concerted effort to combat racism.

North American Lutheran Christians must come alive to the truth that the words, spoken by their missionaries with all force and love, will not be believed as long as the actions of the society out of which that proclaimer has come - actions which result in exploitation of the poor and hungry of the world to maintain an already opulent, luxury-oriented society - betray the words of the Word.

The Vanguard (Vol. 20, No. 1), Jan-Feb 1973, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

With this issue of The Vanguard the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America will begin a new facet of its ministry and service to the church. Now in its twentieth year, LHRAA has, whenever possible, worked closely with leaders and members of the three major Lutheran church bodies as catalyst and resource in the area of human relations, designing and implementing programs to equip laity and clergy for leadership roles. Another avenue of communication is now being opened.

The age structure of a population provides a base for assessing present social and economic conditions as well as the starting point for predicting future population trends.

With an overall median age of 32.0 years, Omaha's population in 1950 (the unshaded population pyramid on page 3) had a sizeable proportion of its population of working age, but lacked school-age and young adult population. The four areas for which data were available paralleled the city's profile, with the closest match in the Northeast and Southeast.

In the spring of 1968, shortly after the Los Angeles Chapter of LHRAA was organized, plans for implementing a summer recreation project were made. Target for the first year was to present sewing classes for teenage girls caught in innercity communities where recreational resources were in short supply. A newsletter to some 350 Lutheran churches in Los Angeles and Orange Counties elicited used sewing machines, money and yardage with which to supply the classes, and women volunteers to teach. That first summer, six sites were staffed with a total enrollment of 150 girls.

The following listing is taken from the Adult Education Series, The Lutheran Church in America, presented by the Board of Publication, 2900 Queen Lane, Philadelphia, Pa. 19-129. These titles were chosen for review by The Vanguard because they relate the Christian commitment to specific problems in society and specific issues in human relations. Each set of books is designed as a study course for church/ discussion groups. We recommend them especially for white North American Christians - for use by the entire congregation, the social service committee, the elders, the adult Bible class - and urge that they be taken …

The gathering of armed government personnel, the sound of fired weapons, and the entrenched commitment of Indian people at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, constitute a chilling and grim reminder of a senseless slaughter of innocents less than 85 years ago at the very same site. That occasion saw U.S. troops bearing down on defenseless men, women, and children in the little village.

Occupational Estimates And Projections Of The Omaha Smsa, David W. Hinton Jan 1973

Occupational Estimates And Projections Of The Omaha Smsa, David W. Hinton

Publications

Local and regional planners have long recognized the need for detailed information on past, present, and projected occupational needs. Ideally, data on: (I) the number of workers employed, (2) their years of job experience, (3) their years and type of job training, (4) the number of workers to retire in the near future, (5) the number of new workers needed due to expected expansion, and (6) the salary levels of the various occupations for each firm and industry in the local economy should be available to describe occupational patterns. Such information would also provide a sound framework for projecting changes …

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Integrity House approach to rehabilitation is an apolitical, myth-oriented method reinforcing the pseudo psychological notion that addiction is exclusively the problem of the addict. Blame is placed solely on the addict; neither social ills nor any other factors share the responsibility for drug abuse.

Selected Social Stratification Factors And The Self Concept As Contingencies In College Persistence And Persistence In College Program Choice, Arnold J. Menning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study developed from a continuing interest by the writer in the various factors associated with student college persistence and stability of program choice. Institutions of higher learning are becoming increasingly concerned in these times of declining enrollments about the need for greater congruence between institutional planning and the services provided to the potential and enrolled student body. Relationships between selected (1) socioeconomic, academic, and self concept variables and (2) college persistence and stability of program choice were investigated in this study. The research was centered around the view of the self as a phenomenal self. Reference group theory …
