This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Issues in School Desegregation" by Peter E. Pflaum.
The current school desegregation crisis in Omaha makes a review of the issues in school desegregation especially relevant. Desegregation first referred to the dismantling of the southern dual school systems. The general principle is that the racial identity of schools should be removed. There should not be 'black' schools or 'white' schools, just schools. Since 1964, the courts have acted not only where the segregation was 'de jure' (by law) but in cases of 'de facto' segregation (where segregation existed without clear action …
Denominational Differences In Attitude Toward Abortion, Sharon Cropper
Denominational Differences In Attitude Toward Abortion, Sharon Cropper
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In recent years there has been a break in a long "conspiracy of silence" on the subject of abortion, and attitude toward abortion has come to demand a great deal of public attention. The year 1967 marked the first changes in the abortion-prohibition laws of the United States in three-quarters of a century. And in early 1973, the United States Supreme Court, for all practical purposes, legalized abortion. The gist of the Supreme Court's ruling was that, except in very limited circumstances, government may not deter the right to abortion at will. Reaction to the Court's decision has been forthcoming …

Masters Theses
The Problem
The Study of Conflict
The purpose of this study is to examine social conflict. More specifically, latent conflict in the classroom will be the focus of this study. Three classes of variables will be discussed: 1. teacher characteristics, 2. student characteristics, and 3. contextual variables. These variables will be examined as to their ability to explain variation in latent conflict in the classroom.
The following discussion will focus on conflict in education as a "social problem." Previous literature will be examined as to the theoretical and empirical importance of the concept of conflict in social research and a …

Although employment conditions in the Omaha SMSA present an overall view of relative prosperity and economic well-being, there is a wide disparity between black and white employment by occupation.2 This disparity, along with an equally disturbing income disparity between blacks and whites in similar occupation groups, merits the immediate attention of local businessmen, politicians, and concerned citizens.
In market terms, a common explanation for black-white employment and income differentials hinges on differences in educational (i .e., skill) levels. Hence, a person's employability potential is to a large extent a function of educational preparation, and one would expect rather wide …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Urban Concentration And Occupational Structure On Wage Differentials Between Women And Men In Selected Geographic Divisions Of The United States, Susan Stickler Hession-Eaton
Graduate Thesis Collection
When attempting to explain the economics of occupational structure, income servies as the apex of discrimination. Women earn only 60% of what men earn. This statistic does not offend enough people since efforts to change the situation have provided only further resistance by women and men for improvement in the earnings split. Women tend to receive lower wage and salary earnings than men because of differences in types of jobs held, job training and continuity of work experience. Large numbers of women work in traditionally low-paying occupations and low-wage industries. Women tend to respond to their cultural up-bringing. My hypothesis …

Purpose and Theory
The Problem
Studies dealing with the use of space have been concerned primarily with territoriality, the way man perceives space through his senses, and with the manner by which culture affects the location of persons in space. This study, like others, falls under the rubric of spatial ecology in that it deals with the occupation of space. This study focuses on the college classroom in an attempt to determine if the occupation of space is systematically patterned, that is, whether particular areas of the classroom are occupied by students with specifiable characteristics. In this context, the particular …

Dimensionality And Internal Composition Of The Twenty-Two Item Mental Health Inventory, John William Fox
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
Social scientists have long been concerned with the relationships between mental disorder and various sociocultural factors, such as, social economic status, ethnic background, sex, age, and marital status. Until quite recently, the majority of studies that have investigated these relationships have defined cases of mental disorder solely in terms of whether or not an individual was in psychiatric treatment (see Faris and Dunham, 1939; Rose and Stub, 1955; Hollingshead and Redlich, 1958).
The utilization of psychiatric treatment as the only criterion of mental disorder, however, has been criticized by a number of researchers. Felix and Bowers (1948), …

Two Delivery System Contexts For The Elderly:The "Institutional" Approach And The "Community" Approach., Mary Sarita Freer
Dissertations and Theses
Theoretically every society has some institutional means which seeks to prevent and alleviate personal misfortune and illness "Institutions are standardized solutions to collective problems." The increasing population rate of older persons, many of whom suffer from chronic diseases and disabilities, does pose a collective problem for society. Formerly, the "institutional" approach developed to address the needs of chronic aging patients and society. Today the "community" approach, by which community service agencies whose goal is to help older adults remain independent of total institutional care by supplying supportive services, is achieving recognition .
This thesis is an exploratory study to assess …

While student enrollment has declined in most public and private colleges in Nebraska, the University of Nebraska at Omaha has experienced substantial growth over the past five years. From 1968 to 1972, UNO gained a total of 2,329 students; an annual growth rate of 5.4 percent (see Tables I, II, and III). During this period, the number of full-time students enrolled at UNO increased at an annual rate of 4.0 percent while part-time enrollment increased at an annual rate of 7.1 percent. Although first-time freshmen normally account for a large part of an institution's growth, the 1968-1972 period for UNO …
Job Satisfaction Of Police Officers In Second Class Cities In Kentucky, Joan Robertson
Job Satisfaction Of Police Officers In Second Class Cities In Kentucky, Joan Robertson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study is to attempt to find out how the police officers in the second-class cities in Kentucky view their work. Questions asked concern relationships with the public, their supervisors, and co-workers; opinions of recent court rulings affecting their work; and their sentiments about salaries and plans to continue in police work. After assessing the job satisfaction of the officers, the results were correlated with other studies and recommendations are made directed toward increasing the officers' motivation and effectiveness in performing their duties.

Determinants Of A Social Movement: Zionism From 1700-1917, Denise Lynn Heller
Sociology ETDs
Neil Smelser’s model for a value-oriented movement is utilized as a framework to analyze the Zionist movement during three time periods in Western and Eastern Europe. Historical material is used to validate the presence of each of Smelser's determinants in an effort to explore the causal factors which facilitated the Zionist movement's success during one time period instead of another. Anthony Oberschall's theory of mobilization is used to elaborate on Smelser’s determinant "mobilization of participants" in order to explain the societal conditions which led to the rise of Zionist leadership and the dissemination of Zionist ideology within the two geographic …
Between Words And Actions: The Problem Of Motivation In Symbolic Interactionism, Robert Scott Broadhead
Between Words And Actions: The Problem Of Motivation In Symbolic Interactionism, Robert Scott Broadhead
Dissertations and Theses
The development of a theory of motivation in symbolic interactionism is traced, with particular reference to the work of G.H. Mead, Kenneth Burke, C.W. Mills, Nelson Foote, and Ernest Becker. Specific attention is focused on comparing the original theoretical assumptions of particularly Mead and Burke to the varying formulations of the problems of motivation that were later developed by symbolic interactionists. Specifically, it is argued that, primarily due to Burke's analysis, the traditional practice of deterministically explaining human action as being the result of variously imagined motives "in" people is, in fact, no explanation at all but simply a variety …
