Public Concepts Of Poverty: The County Commissioners' View, Charles Ramsey, Rita Braito Jan 1974

Public Concepts Of Poverty: The County Commissioners' View, Charles Ramsey, Rita Braito

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Every program designed to decrease poverty is based upon assumptions either as to the nature and causes of poverty or what is necessary to help the poor improve their lot (Spilerman and Elish, 1970; Task Force on Economic Growth and Opportunity, 1966; Valentine, 1968). Often these assumptions are only implicit, and supervisors of the program might not even agree with the assumptions if they were stated. Nevertheless, a program would itself make no sense unless certain statements about poverty were true. For example, a program of economic development to increase employment opportunities assumes that, first, much poverty is due to …

Sociology And Social Work: Science And Art, Robert D. Leighninger, Leslie H. Leighninger, Robert M. Pankin Jan 1974

Sociology And Social Work: Science And Art, Robert D. Leighninger, Leslie H. Leighninger, Robert M. Pankin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

We live in an age of specialization and usually find it beneficial, perhaps even essential. However, we have been aware since Marx's time at least that the division of labor has its cost. And though we may be a long way from the unconpartmentalized utopia where an individual might do four different kinds of work in a single day, we cannot afford to let the assumptions which underlie the separation of important jobs and functions go without periodic reexamination. The separation of the work of the sociologist (or, indeed, any social scientist) and the social …

Harbor Light: Organization On Skid Row Today, Alison Evelyn Woodward Jan 1974

Harbor Light: Organization On Skid Row Today, Alison Evelyn Woodward

Honors Papers

The homeless man has always been a visible portion of America's urban life, and a most intriguing portion. My own interest in the homeless began through historical research done on the rise of the American city and the place of the hobo in American life. Through urban sociology I developed additional concerns about the place of the skid row community in the life of the central business districts of cities.

The place of the homeless man raises questions of both deviancy and social control. The attempts of society to rehabilitate the homeless and the special interaction of society at large …

The Generalizability Of Learned Helplessness, Ian J. Grabenhorst Jan 1974

The Generalizability Of Learned Helplessness, Ian J. Grabenhorst

All Master's Theses

While it has been experimentally demonstrated that "learned helplessness" can be conditioned in a number of species, the subjects commonly employed have been dogs. This paper presents an attempt to investigate "learned helplessness" in rats (a variant of the Long-Evans strain), and examine the question of its generalizability from shock as an aversive stimulus to noise. It also explores the possible generality of "helplessness" to exploratory behavior in an open field. The results demonstrated that the Ss were susceptible to "helplessness" conditioning across shock conditions; however, "helplessness" did not generalize across shock to noise conditions. The present study also showed …

Emile Durkheim And The Categories Of The Understanding, Barbara Patricia Hostetler Jan 1974

Emile Durkheim And The Categories Of The Understanding, Barbara Patricia Hostetler

Sociology ETDs

In The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life, Emile Durkheim attempts to demonstrate the social character of the categories of the understanding--concepts such as space, time, causation, etc. The present study is devoted to clarification of this account of the categories. It is proposed that Durkheim's account of the relation between the categories and society may be understood more clearly by interpreting his categorial formulation as one concerned with the origin of the categories, not in an absolute, but in a relative sense of .. origin." To show that this is the case, the proposition "the categories are social in …

The Settlement Of Teton Valley, Idaho-Wyoming, David Brooks Green Jan 1974

The Settlement Of Teton Valley, Idaho-Wyoming, David Brooks Green

Theses and Dissertations

Teton Valley, throughout many centuries, has attracted several occupance groups, each interacting with the environment in various ways for various reasons. Indian and explorer contact did little to alter the surroundings. More frequent contact came, however, as trappers and traders visited the valley to trap beaver and meet in rendezvous.

The end of intensified fur trapping slowed contact with the basin. Government personnel, a painter, a few squawmen and horse thieves were the only inhabitants because Indians, remoteness, and harsh climatic conditions kept others out until 1882 when permanent agricultural settlers entered the valley. Hundreds of people followed, many of …

A Documentary History Of The Lord's Way Of Watching Over The Church By The Priesthood Through The Ages, Rex A. Anderson Jan 1974

A Documentary History Of The Lord's Way Of Watching Over The Church By The Priesthood Through The Ages, Rex A. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Since the days of Adam the Lord has called upon the priesthood to watch over the families: To see that fathers are doing their duty as patriarchs over their families, and to assist and encourage the fathers in this responsibility. Thus thwarting the efforts of Satan to lead the children of men astray. The principle has always been for the priesthood to watch over the families. But the process of how this is done has changed from time to time according to the needs of the people. This treatise covers the history of these changes in documentary form.

Perspective On Youthful Deviance: Implications For Social Policies, Albert S. Alissi Jan 1974

Perspective On Youthful Deviance: Implications For Social Policies, Albert S. Alissi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

The way a society deals with its younger deviants reflects the place assigned to youth in hat society. In his famous study of European family life, Phillippe Aries pointed out that for centuries children shared the same status as adults and were mixed with adults as soon as they were weaned from their mothers at about the age of seven. And so it was possible that in England in 1801, a child of thirteen was hanged for stealing a spoon. A girl of seven was publicly hanged in 1808 and a boy of nine was …

Representatives In Government - A Role For Social Planning Councils , Alan Cohen Jan 1974

Representatives In Government - A Role For Social Planning Councils , Alan Cohen

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

I have referred to a key problem of how to make individual and group concerns known to the decision makers without ignoring the weakly organized and unorganized-and without putting both the legislators and administrators in the position of merely ratifying bargaining negotiated between these interest groups. I have suggested non-governmental Social Planning Councils have a potentially significant role to play in the changing need for representativeness for the myriad of strong, weak and unorganized groups and individuals.

This role recognizes the feedback benefits resulting from the proposition that people learn to participate by participating, and …

Racial Conflict And Institutionalization Of Social Welfare Decision-Making, Walter W. Stafford Jan 1974

Racial Conflict And Institutionalization Of Social Welfare Decision-Making, Walter W. Stafford

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Introduction – Overview

In recent decades, there has been considerable attention devoted to the nature of interest group conflict and emerging structural changes in the American economic, social and political system. The economic changes have perhaps been the key indicators of emerging trends. These changes have been reflected mainly in the amount of economic activity and occupations devoted to services since the late 1950's; the increasing concern with technological growth; the close collaboration between national government policies and planning and the private sector; national governmental assistance for urban and suburban problems, and more recently, the increased mandates of interest groups …

A Sociological Study Of Native American Indians In Higher Education, Robert George Lake Jr. Jan 1974

A Sociological Study Of Native American Indians In Higher Education, Robert George Lake Jr.

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The decision to undertake research on the topic under consideration came from a number of reasons. To begin with, the author is of Native American (Seneca-Cherokee) descent; secondly, he is the Ethnic Affairs Administrator at Humboldt State University responsible for initiating and developing Indian and other ethnic minority programs; and thirdly, he is the Region I Chairman of the California Indian Education Association. This unique cultural-educational background has placed him in a position to recognize that educational leaders in American Indian communities are handicapped by lack of information about higher education practices while colleges and universities know very little about …

Residency Differentials In Mormon Fertility, Brian Leroy Pitcher Jan 1974

Residency Differentials In Mormon Fertility, Brian Leroy Pitcher

Theses and Dissertations

Although one of the most consistent findings of recent fertility research is the convergence of the religious differentials in fertility, little data have been analyzed to discover the Mormon fertility trends and differentials. This study, based on data obtained on 1,001 Mormon couples, is concerned with describing the effects that the dispersion of Mormon families from the Mormon center in Utah to surrounding areas with various social conditions is having on the fertility of the relocated Mormon families. Data presented clearly show that such families do, on the average, have a lower fertility than do their Mormon contemporaries residing in …

The Quality Of Life In A Midwestern Rural Community, James E. Bodensteiner Jan 1974

The Quality Of Life In A Midwestern Rural Community, James E. Bodensteiner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is based on the following assumptions: (a) that the kind of community in which people live affects their sense of well-being, (b) that a community should provide certain qualities for its residents in order that they may enjoy an optimum quality of life, (c) that many large urban population centers are failing to provide the environment for this desired quality of life, and (d) that rural communities are and have been on the decline as population and business centers in the United States. In view of these assumptions this study attempted to discover whether the small rural community …
