The Beeson Farmstead: A Study Of The Functional Aspects Of A Black Farm In The Richland Community, Annelen Archbold Aug 1974

The Beeson Farmstead: A Study Of The Functional Aspects Of A Black Farm In The Richland Community, Annelen Archbold

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study documents the lifestyle on a small, prosperous black farmstead in the Richland community of Butler County, Kentucky. It is based on extensive fieldwork and interviews conducted with Percy Beeson, owner of the farm for aver fifty years. The result of the fieldwork and interviews was the documentation of how this farmstead, maintained without mechanical farm equipment, worked as a functional unit on a year-round basis.

As a functional unit, the Beeson farmstead is described in terms of the Beeson family and their ownership of the farm and the breakdown of the property into two dependent units. In the …

The Labeling Perspective And Commitment Procedures: A Case Study Of Bernalillo District Court In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Edeltraut Hannemann Jul 1974

The Labeling Perspective And Commitment Procedures: A Case Study Of Bernalillo District Court In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Edeltraut Hannemann

Sociology ETDs

An effort is made to analyze the labeling perspective by contrasting the clinical vs. the societal reaction model. Erving Goffman's and Thomas J. Scheff's theory of ascribed deviance with its social consequences, and Kai Erikson's conception of role-validation and role-commitment are utilized to examine its effects on the mentally ill. In this critical analysis of current commitment procedures attention is drawn to the field of forensic psychiatry, the medicolegal criteria, to the laws and statutes, and to concepts such as mental illness, insanity, and dangerousness. These concepts are vague, undefined, and ambiguous. They are not defined in objective scientific terms …

Smelser's Value-Added Approach To The Study Of Collective Behavior: The Karate Craze As A Case In Point, Stephen Earl Doeren Jul 1974

Smelser's Value-Added Approach To The Study Of Collective Behavior: The Karate Craze As A Case In Point, Stephen Earl Doeren

Sociology ETDs

This thesis is an exploratory case study of participation in karate based on the concept of a craze presented by Smelser. Some specific hypotheses concerning how the determinants in Smelser's theory could be applied to the emergence of karate were presented for an empirical study of this phenomenon.

To test these hypotheses, a sample of adult male karate participants (karatekas) at an Albuquerque karate school were interviewed. Additional knowledge was gained by participant observation in karate classes. For comparative purposes, questionnaires were distributed to adult male members who belonged to two Albuquerque health spas.

Compared with the spa participants, the …

The Social Construction Of Professional Knowledge Illustrative Empirical Patterns In Social Work, 1956-1973, Danny L. Jorgensen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Traditional sociological conceptions of professions are examined in this thesis by refocusing attention upon knowledge and ideology as a key to understanding changes in professional reality and action. In a proposed transcending model of professional knowledge it is hypothesized that conflicts between certain ideological positions will result in the displacement of one position by an opposing position and thereby produce changes in the definition and meaning of specific aspects of professional knowledge. Furthermore, it is suggested that knowledge construction, ideological debate, and changes in professional meaning may be observed in the arena of professional communication which is represented by major …

A Serendipitous Relationship Between Theory Modification And A Study Of Staff Development, Patricia A. Brown Jul 1974

A Serendipitous Relationship Between Theory Modification And A Study Of Staff Development, Patricia A. Brown

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

There are instances in which the guiding impetus to a study is a very practical problem, the answers to which are expected to have immediate applicability. Although the practical purpose is accomplished, at the study's end comes the recognition that perhaps the most important contribution of the investigation had been the uncovering of theoretical implications.

The above serendipitous process is applicable to the following report of a limited study of staff development in a new youth serving agency. The study is presented in detail so that the main elements associated with the validation and elaboration of a conceptualization of organizational …

Social Work Practice And The Social Context, Jeffry Galper Jul 1974

Social Work Practice And The Social Context, Jeffry Galper

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Any effort to define appropriate tasks and directions for social work practice must necessarily come to grips with some analysis of the particular social-political-historical situation within which that practice is being formulated. Too often it seems as though we attempt to define practice abstracted from the particular period in which that practice takes place. It is true, on the one hand, that it is important to develop generic principles of practice. Similarly, it is true that the definition of the social work task is not a matter left solely to the discretion of the profession. In fact, the profession may …

Innovation, Involvement, And Contemporary Service Organizations, Frank A. Kastelic Jul 1974

Innovation, Involvement, And Contemporary Service Organizations, Frank A. Kastelic

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Purpose of This Paper

Innovation and involvement have come to be ascribed an almost mystical potency for the task of bringing more relevant services and more human relationships to clients of service organizations. Many descriptive

and hortatory articles have appeared in the social welfare and health literature concerning the virtues of contemporary organizations exhibiting these characteristics, but little in the way of hard thinking about their real implications to service organizations has been done. The majority of the articles are reprises of proposals, or accounts of the first year or two of a program, with an emphasis upon positive prospects …

The Significance Of Ethnicity In Staffing Corrections, Alfred J. Kutzik Jul 1974

The Significance Of Ethnicity In Staffing Corrections, Alfred J. Kutzik

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

Until recently the total thrust of efforts to improve the staffing of corrections has been towards the recruitment and development of trained personnel. In the past decade it has begun to be recognized that factors other than training have to be taken into account. Largely as a result of California's groundbreaking Community Treatment Project the personality of staff is now considered by some to be as important as their training and in a few programs those with certain types of personality and training have been assigned to work, i.e., "matched", with juvenile offenders who have …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Omaha-Council Bluffs Tax Border Issue."

Recently governmental administrators and politicians of Omaha have voiced concern over the sales losses that might result because of Iowa's exemption of food purchases from the retail sales tax--a measure which took effect July 1, 1974.1

Generally, it is felt that a sales tax rate differential between two border cities will influence sales as favorable rate differentials are reduced or unfavorable rate differentials are created or widened. However, the magnitude of the problem will depend on many factors, e.g., location of major shopping facilities, distance, …

Crime And Deterrence: Correlation Analysis, William C. Bailey, J. David Martin, Louis N. Gray Jul 1974

Crime And Deterrence: Correlation Analysis, William C. Bailey, J. David Martin, Louis N. Gray

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

A correlation analysis of the severity and certainty of punish ment and offense rates for the major index crimes produces results consistent with the predictions of deterrence theory. Certainty of punishment proves to be the chief deterrent for most crimes. Homicide, however, is influenced by severity, pos sibly reflecting the differences between homicide and other of fenses. Little evidence of interaction is found between certainty and severity in effects on crime rate. A powerfunction proves to better describe the relationship between the punishment varia bles and crime rates than a rectilinear equation-a conclusion which, even apart from the date, appears …

Evaluating A Pilot Social Service Project For Widows: A Chronicle Of Research Problems, S. Roxanne Hiltz Jul 1974

Evaluating A Pilot Social Service Project For Widows: A Chronicle Of Research Problems, S. Roxanne Hiltz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The decade of the 70's has seen the appearance of a number of publications in the area of "evaluation research", the effort to systematically apply social science research methods to the evaluation of action programs set up for the purpose of helping to solve social problems. Evaluation research is thus one area in which social scientists can be of direct aid in setting public policy about social welfare services.

An excellent primer on the problems that are likely to arise in the course of an evaluation effort and the "conventional wisdom" that has been developed thus far is Carol Weiss' …

The Wedding Complex: The Social And Occupational Organization Of A Rite Of Passage, Trudy Knicely Henson

Student Work

The wedding as a rite of passage plays an important part in contemporary American society. The planning, staging, and recording phases of a formal wedding directly involve a number of people. The research for this thesis focuses on four of the occupational groups— bridal consultants, formal wear consultants, florists, and photographers— normally involved in the three phases of a formal wedding. Utilizing participant observation and interview techniques I gathered data relating to the duties, training, and regulation of each occupational group as well as the attitudes of representative members of each group toward their work, other members of their own …

Recipients' Attitudes Toward Welfare, Kirk W. Elifson, William S. Little, William Chamberlain Jul 1974

Recipients' Attitudes Toward Welfare, Kirk W. Elifson, William S. Little, William Chamberlain

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

While the general plight of welfare recipients has long been recognized, little or nothing to date has been ascertained concerning their views toward the system that largely determines their lives. Many recipients find themselves manipulated by a less than personalized bureaucracy but few researchers have sought to examine the experiences and attitudes of these recipients toward that system. Given the recent figures which indicate a "welfare explosion" (Piven and Cloward, 1971), and the vast expenditures for public assistance programs (Skolnick and Dales, 1969:5), the lack of systematic empirical research in this area is disconcerting. Such information should be of considerable …

Interorganizational Conflict: The Case Of Police Youth Bureaus And The Juvenile Court, C. David Hollister, Joe Hudson Jul 1974

Interorganizational Conflict: The Case Of Police Youth Bureaus And The Juvenile Court, C. David Hollister, Joe Hudson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Police departments, juvenile courts, training schools, and a variety of welfare organizations together constitute the network of agencies formally instituted to deal with juvenile deviance.I Because each of the organizations has an interest in reducing deviance, it is sometimes assumed that they share the same goals and work closely and cooperatively with each other. The purpose of this paper is to report on an exploratory study of inter-organizational relations at one link in this network: relations between police youth bureaus and the juvenile court.
