An Approach To Meeting The Educational Needs Of A Select Group Of Migrant Children, Ruth G. Cornelius
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Children in grades one through six who were identified as children from migrant agricultural families in a specific country in South Central Kentucky were compared to non-migrant children in the same specific county. A determination of the educational needs of these migrant children was made by a comparison of their standardized test scores to similar test scores of children from non-migrant families in the areas of Reading, Math, AND Total Battery scores. Resultant data from the test scores indicated that migrant children generally do not have achieve as high academically in the areas tested as do children from non-migrant families. …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Local Economic Indicators, Second Quarter, 1976: Omaha's Economy Expands Steadily."
The first half of 1976 was a period of steady economic growth in Omaha. Among the strongest indicators of economic advancement are those in construction activity. The number of single-family building permits increased from 385 units during the first quarter of 1976 to 453 units during the second quarter of 1976. Multi-family permits were up over both the first quarter of 1976 and the second quarter of 1975. The total number of nonresidential permits increased from 151 units valued at 7.9 …

International Variation In Metropolitanism: National Integration Into An International System Of Countries As An Important Consideration, Michael Lee Lindsay
International Variation In Metropolitanism: National Integration Into An International System Of Countries As An Important Consideration, Michael Lee Lindsay
Dissertations and Theses
The research reported here is directed toward the determination of whether or not the proportion of a country's population living in cities of 100,000 or more is significantly affected by that country's involvement in trade relations with other countries. The proportion of a country's population living in cities of 100,000 or more was termed its level of metropolitanism. It is proposed that international variation in metropolitanism is a function of, among other things, the country's position relative to other countries in a world system of intersocietal functional linkages. It is argued that one of the best indicators of the functional …

Deprivation Theory And Occult Belief, Bruce Hall
Sociology ETDs
ABSTRACT
This thesis is an investigation of a number of alternative explanations of belief in and activity in various subareas of the occult milieu. These subareas include astrology, spiritualism, satanism and various occult activities such as palm and card reading.
A number of alternative hypotheses concerning the relationships between occult belief and practice and status and psychic deprivation as measured by self-esteem, self-competence and anomie were developed. Alternative explanations which centered around peer influence and religious orthodoxy were also presented. Three principle hypotheses were tested:
1)belief in and activity in various aspects of the occult
will vary inversely as a …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Omaha's Central Business District."
As Omaha is the dominant City of the metropolitan area, the Central Business District (CBD) is the focus of Omaha. Historically it has enjoyed this distinction by virtue of its location and by the fact it contains the area's concentration of government, office, finance, cultural, entertainment, and general commercial activities. As Omaha has undergone great change in recent years so has the Central Business District. This report summarizes the findings of a six month study which had as its primary purpose that of determining the impact of …
The Death Penalty And Discretion: Implications Of The Furman Decision For Criminal Justice, Marc Riedel
The Death Penalty And Discretion: Implications Of The Furman Decision For Criminal Justice, Marc Riedel
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Whether the deatn penalty should remain as a penalty available in American criminal law continues to be a subject of controversy among social scientists, lawyers, the judiciary and the public. While the traditional areas of debate over whether the death penalty is a deterrent and whether it is imposed ina discriminatory manner continue to be important issues, the recent Supreme Court decision (Furman v Georgia, 1972) and subsequent legislation has introduced another dimension: the nature and use of discretion.
Current litigation on the death penalty (Fowler v North Carolina, 1974) is directed toward a resolution of issues raised by Furman. …
Educating Social Workers For Evolving Roles In Corrections, Florence Kaslow, Stewart Werner
Educating Social Workers For Evolving Roles In Corrections, Florence Kaslow, Stewart Werner
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The sought after concept of "socialized justice" toward which we aspire will hopefully emerge a reality in the Twentieth Century. The pendulum swings from the public's indignation and outrage toward the violent and heinous crimes of our times to the advance of modern correctional methods and techniques stimulated by changing social forces and federally funded programs; the humanization of our prisons, facilities and field services is the result. Gains are being made which are beginning to be felt, in which prescribed treatment programs tailored to meet the needs of the individual are beginning to pay dividends. This advance speaks to …
Police Professionalism: Another Look At The Issues, Samuel Walker
Police Professionalism: Another Look At The Issues, Samuel Walker
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The concept of professionalism is frequently used as a frame of reference for evaluating the organizational status of the American police. Observers generally conclude that the police lack most of the essential features of professional status. This paper questions the utility of using such a standard for evaluating the police. The professions of medicine, law and education are themselves in a state of flux. In particular, the crucial concept of professional autonomy appears increasingly incompatible with the goal of public accountability. Rather than expect the police to strive toward the traditional forms of professionalism, we should think in terms of …
Land Value Taxation: Impact Analysis On Omaha/Douglas County, Nebraska, Gary Carlson
Land Value Taxation: Impact Analysis On Omaha/Douglas County, Nebraska, Gary Carlson

The present property tax has been under attack by home owners, business and industry. Many studies have shown the present property tax to be the most unpopular tax levied by government. This tax once levied by all governments including the federal government is now almost exclusively used by local governments with other levels of government adopting sales and income taxes as replacements for the property tax. While other levels of governments have abandoned the property tax it currently seems that the local property tax will be used by local governments as their main revenue source for quite some time in …
Certainty Of Arrest And Crime Rates For Major Felonies: Research Note, William C. Bailey
Certainty Of Arrest And Crime Rates For Major Felonies: Research Note, William C. Bailey
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
A recent investigation by Tittle and Rowe (1974) examining the deterrent effect of the certainty of arrest on felony rates in Florida is briefly summarized and critiqued. Examination shows their analysis to suffer from serious theoretical and methodological limitations. To extend their investigation and thus better understand the deterrent effect of arrest we examine the relationship between arrest rates and offense rates for cities and counties of Florida for seven major felonies. Analysis lends general support to the deterrence argument, but shows that the effect of arrest is not uniform for each offense, with different levels of arrest (certainty of …
The Dysfunctional Dialectics Of The Prison, Richard A. Ball
The Dysfunctional Dialectics Of The Prison, Richard A. Ball
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
According to the functionalist perspective, the survival of an organization is a matter of functions performed. A dialectical framework allows us to deal with the fact that durability is not necessarily connected with functionality. Organizations may be built on retrogressive accomodations which amount to dysfunctional dialectics. The prison represents an example in that it has developed as a polarity of commonweal and service organization, and is divided against itself. The coercive structure results in compliance patterns of an alienative nature. The basic dialectical units are roles which divide prisoners by emphasizing power relationships. Staff authority is weakened by a process …
Life Satisfaction And Attitudes Toward The Future: A Comparison By Age, Sex, And Area Of Residence, Jimmie Cooley
Life Satisfaction And Attitudes Toward The Future: A Comparison By Age, Sex, And Area Of Residence, Jimmie Cooley
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This study was concerned with evaluations people make regarding their present satisfaction and happiness, and with their attitudes toward the future. Measurements were not limited to objective circumstances in which people live. The individual’s subjective sense of well-being, or the quality of life, was the desired information, and this quality is not found by measuring income, size of residence, or a unit of time—though well-being may be related to such variables. This study sought to determine aspects of present satisfaction as well as those aspects of satisfaction or of worry which people think will apply to them in their later …
Aging And The Semantic Differential: Semantic Stability In The Measurement Of Social Evaluation, Marilyn Diane Petersen
Aging And The Semantic Differential: Semantic Stability In The Measurement Of Social Evaluation, Marilyn Diane Petersen
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to assess the validity of utilizing the same semantic differential test as a measure of social evaluation for persons of different ages. The semantic differential, a rating technique by which judgments of stimuli are made on seven-interval bipolar descriptive continua called "scales", currently receives widespread usage as a measure of attitudes toward aging and the elderly. However, a lack of semantic stability across stimuli and across subjects, known, respectively, as "concept-scale" and "subject-scale" interaction, has been found to occur with the technique in various areas of research. That such a lack of stability might …

Indigenous Correctional Paraprofessionals: "Bourgeois Nigger Or Empathetic Worker?" - A Brief Position Paper, Robert J. Wicks
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Employment of paraprofessionals in correctional settings is no longer considered to be a controversial experiment. Their involvement in institutional and community-based programs is expected today. To utilize only professionals such as social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and penologists is considered to be an outdated waste of available personnel. A number of recent, comprehensive reports have borne this out (Gartner, 1971; Sobey, 1970; Arnhoff & Rubenstein, 1969; Grosser, Henry & Kelly, 1969).
