Children's Attitudes Toward The Dental Experience, Tom Leo Day
Children's Attitudes Toward The Dental Experience, Tom Leo Day
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of children toward the dental visit. A group of children who had undergone dental treatment with the use of nitrous oxide-oxygen served as the experimental group while children who had received dental treatment without the use of nitrous oxide-oxygen served as the control group. Attitudes toward the dental experience among these two groups were compared to determine any differences or similarities due to the type of treatment used. Data were also collected on the parents of the children to determine whether the child's attitude toward the dental visit tended to …
Decision Making In Two Types Of Working Families, Nancy Ann Bueche
Decision Making In Two Types Of Working Families, Nancy Ann Bueche
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to investigate actual decision making in two types of families in which both spouses worked and their perceptions of decision making responsibility in the ideal family. The two family types were composed of (1) Professional wives with professional husbands; and (2) nonprofessional wives with nonprofessional husbands.
Questionnaires were completed by 34 professional couples and 63 nonprofessional couples who resided in Flint, Michigan during the fall of 1976. Factor analyses were completed on the husbands' and wives' self reported responses to questions concerning who should make decisions in the ideal family and who actually mode …
Factors Influencing The Use Of Small Electrical Kitchen Appliances, Kathi Marie Braegger
Factors Influencing The Use Of Small Electrical Kitchen Appliances, Kathi Marie Braegger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Comparisons were made to determine which appliances owned by homemakers were used often and which appliances were used seldom or never and to relate areas of satisfaction and dissatisfaction to the amount of appliance use. The sample consisted of 123 homemakers from Cache and Weber counties in Utah.
Five hypotheses were tested. The amount of appliance use was significantly related to method of acquisition, performance, design and knowledge factors. The amount of appliance use was not significantly related to storage factors.
The Micro-Characteristics Of Adult-Neonate Social Interaction, Ann Marie Berghout-Austin
The Micro-Characteristics Of Adult-Neonate Social Interaction, Ann Marie Berghout-Austin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In order to dissect social behaviors into their smallest components, five interactions, each involving one neonate and one adult, were video taped and kinescoped into 16mm black and white film exposed at 24 frames per second. The film was analyzed frame by frame and all starts, stops, and changes in direction of movements were scored. Adult movement durations were significantly shorter during vocalization and longer during nonvocalization. Each infant and adult body part had its own characteristic movement rate. Almost two-thirds of the dyadic movements were interactionally synchronous and most of the synchronization occurred during vocalization. It is suggested that …
The Cache County Snowmobiler: An Empirical Study, Michael William Dierker
The Cache County Snowmobiler: An Empirical Study, Michael William Dierker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Snowmobiling is one of the major outdoor winter sports in Cache County, Utah. Despite its popularity, it has run into several problems, among which the most noticeable is its conflict with other winter recreationists, namely, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. In order to resolve this conflict, one must first understand more about each group involved. As such, the purpose of this research was to obtain information on the snowmobiler in Cache County, Utah. Specifically, the objectives of the study were: (1) to identify the attitudes of the snowmobiler toward leisure and the environment; (2) to identify and compare occupations, SES, and …
Household Projections For Utah: 1970-2000, Stephen Hauwah Kan
Household Projections For Utah: 1970-2000, Stephen Hauwah Kan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study deals with Utah household projections by age and sex for five-year intervals from 1970-2000. Projections are based on the method used by the bureau of the Census with certain modifications. Two sets of the population projects prepared by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, high and low medium, are chosen as the population base. By assuming the household formation pattern in two alternate ways, constant rates and exponential growth rates, two sets of household projections are prepared for each of the two sets of population projections. This study also makes some examinations on the social and economic implications of …

The Study Of Intended Distance Based On The Migration Intention Of Utah High School Senior Students, Pyoung Kim
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study examines the relationship between the distance 1975 high school seniors intended to move, referred to as intended distance, and socioeconomic and psychological factors. The research is based on information collected from separate samples of about 900 graduating seniors from the rural, urban and metropolitan areas of Utah. Utilizing the type of boundary that would be crossed in carrying out an intended move as the proxy for distance, it was found that 14 percent of the youth intended to live most of the rest of their lives out of Utah. While rural youth were more likely to intend to …
Shoshoni Conceptualizations Of Plant Relationships, Bryan Ray Spykerman
Shoshoni Conceptualizations Of Plant Relationships, Bryan Ray Spykerman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Interviews were conducted with 10 Shoshoni-speaking people to investigate conceptualizations of plant relationships. A card-sort technique and informal questioning were employed in an attempt to elicit plant classifications and taxonomic relationships. Results indicate classifications are based on multiple criteria including morphology, cultural utilization, geographic setting and growth habit. A paradigm which postulates conceptualizations based on prototypic images fits the data better than the supposition that memory is composed of extensive taxonomic structures.

Public Affairs, Community Service And Personal Care: The Three Faces Of Social Work, Roger A. Lohmann
Public Affairs, Community Service And Personal Care: The Three Faces Of Social Work, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper was written for a faculty seminar at the School of Social Work, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where at the time the author was an Assistant Professor. It makes the case that contemporary social work at the time was an uneasy mix of three very different approaches: A public affairs perspective addressing broad social policy issues; a community services perspective extending to agency management, planning and financing; and a personal care perspective built on psychotherapy, social casework and group work. At the time, many schools of social work were struggling with a legacy of strong support for the personal …

Review Of Applied Urban Research 1977, Vol. 05, No. 04, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)
Publications
This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Socioeconomic Status and Educational Expenditures in Nebraska," by Robert Henningsen.
In the study of political science it is easy to become preoccupied with the descriptions of political institutions, behaviors and processes. Therefore, political scientists have frequently overlooked the importance of socioeconomic forces in shaping public policy. There seems to be no great mystery in accounting for public policy by looking inside the political system. However, the relationship between socioeconomic forces and public policy is less clearly understood.
