Utilization Of Services By Omaha's Older Mexican-Americans, Genevieve Burch, Carol M. Davis Jan 1979

Utilization Of Services By Omaha's Older Mexican-Americans, Genevieve Burch, Carol M. Davis

Publications

Today's elderly population has become a major focus of concern. Modern technology and improved health care have contributed to longevity and consequently increased the senior citizen population. Lay (1975) has estimated that by the year 2000 approximately 25 million elderly will be living in the United States.

A Needs Assessment Of Older Hispanics In Omaha, Nebraska, David R. Dimartino Jan 1979

A Needs Assessment Of Older Hispanics In Omaha, Nebraska, David R. Dimartino

Publications

The successful delivery of human services requires rational program planning. Rational program planning, in turn, requires evaluation of 1) the needs of targeted client groups, 2) the availability of established services to the potential clients, and 3) the utilization of available services by the client population(s), The success of human service delivery systems, therefore, must incorporate the assessment of public programs in terms of the correspondence between client needs and service provision and usage.

This Way To Foster Parenting: A Training Manual For People Who Want To Be Foster Parents - Participant's Manual, Barbara Kendrick, Carol Ertl Jan 1979

This Way To Foster Parenting: A Training Manual For People Who Want To Be Foster Parents - Participant's Manual, Barbara Kendrick, Carol Ertl

Publications

It is a well-known fact that in our society today there are many problems-and these problems often strike first and hardest in the family. Families today often need help, and one form of help is having the children removed temporarily and placed in foster care.

The foster families that care for these displaced children are in actually helping more than the children in their care; they are helping families get back on their feet and reunite if at all possible. Thus, foster parenting requires more than the skills learned as a parent of one's own children; it requires helping families …

Public Awareness Of The Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center, Michale A. Montwill, Matilda S. Mcintire, James J. O'Donnell, Margaret A. Nelson, Murray Frost Jan 1979

Public Awareness Of The Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center, Michale A. Montwill, Matilda S. Mcintire, James J. O'Donnell, Margaret A. Nelson, Murray Frost

Publications

A Poison Control Center needs to continually update its impact on the community it serves. At the Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center, a telephone survey was performed to ascertain baseline data for ongoing poison awareness programs. Our data shows that 36.6% of the population would call the PCC in the case of acute poisoning. There is a need to stress that the PCC is not only a center for information but also for treatment at home. Distribution of the PCC phone number to be attached to the phone needs to be increased. Many people obtained the phone number through time …

The Ideal Characteristics Of Foxfire Type Projects As Perceived By Teacher Advisors, Robert Dennis England Jan 1979

The Ideal Characteristics Of Foxfire Type Projects As Perceived By Teacher Advisors, Robert Dennis England

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Eliot Wigginton, after six weeks of classroom teaching at the Rabun-Gap Nacoochee School in rural north Georgia, was frustrated because he found that his students were not interested in the courses he was prepared to teach. He had graduated from Cornell University in May 1966 with a master's degree and had come to Rabun-Gap to instruct mountain children in English and geography. He realized, fortunately, that if his students were bored it was he who had bored them. He believed that it might be better him to seek another career (Wigginton, 1972).

A Multi-Valued Attitudinal Study Of Obscenity And Freedom Of Expression, Allen W. Palmer Jan 1979

A Multi-Valued Attitudinal Study Of Obscenity And Freedom Of Expression, Allen W. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine whether religiosity is a determining factor in public reaction to obscenity issues.

A sample population of 452 residents of the community of Idaho Falls, Idaho was selected using a technique based on a list of random numbers in October, 1979. Path analysis, Chi-square analysis and Spearman's correlation were used to measure the results.

The study found there is a significant relationship between religiosity and behavior intention toward obscenity issues. The affective component of the attitude organization functions somewhat as a mediating variable. There were also findings that members of the Church of Jesus Christ …

Three Measures Of Political Alienation, 1952 To 1976, Michael J. Muha Jan 1979

Three Measures Of Political Alienation, 1952 To 1976, Michael J. Muha

Honors Papers

The present study seeks to discover the relationships that exist among three open, operationalizations of political alienation, social location (demographic) characteristics of the individual, and dissatisfaction with government policy. After a theoretical discussion of anomie and alienation and their extensions to political alienation, measures of political cynicism, internal political inefficacy, and external political inefficacy are examined with various measures of ascribed and achieved individual attributes and with the perception of policy differences with the Republican and Democratic Parties. Multivariate models are then used to examine the relative impact of these two set of variables on the measures of political alienation.

Mortuary Metaphor: Location Of The Remains Of The Deceased As A Symbol Of Group Membership, Barbara Allen Fuchsman Jan 1979

Mortuary Metaphor: Location Of The Remains Of The Deceased As A Symbol Of Group Membership, Barbara Allen Fuchsman

Honors Papers

The question of where to place the dead is a universal problem for mankind. The body of the deceased is not regarded as ordinary carrion. It must be cared for in a correct manner and disposed of in an appropriate place, not simply for hygienic reasons, "but out of moral obligation" (Hertz 1960:27). Death creates similar psychological and social problems in all human societies. Consequently similar kinds of rites, such as rites of separation, of protection, of reaggregation within a new order, and of commemoration, are very widespread, as is the ritual sequence in which they are found (Hertz 1960; …

“Sociology At Nebraska: 1884-1929,” Together With “A History Of Sociology At The University Of Nebraska,” By J.O. Hertzler, Joyce O. Hertzler, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

At the turn of the century the University of Nebraska was one of the four leading centers of sociology in the United States. Despite this auspicious start, Nebraska has remained relatively obscure in the accounts of the history of Sociology. This is partially a result of its size: until 1959 the faculty consisted of only five members and was oriented to a small but quality graduate program. The document which follows is an original manuscript recording the early history of the department. It was written by Joyce O. Hertzler in the Winter of 1929. This rough draft, now yellowing and …

The First Years Of Life: A Comparative Analysis Of British And American Parent Education, Deborah Anne Smith Guisti, Ellen Turner Jurevic, Jane Elizabeth Mozena, David W. Pedersen Jan 1979

The First Years Of Life: A Comparative Analysis Of British And American Parent Education, Deborah Anne Smith Guisti, Ellen Turner Jurevic, Jane Elizabeth Mozena, David W. Pedersen

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of our study is to analyze a British parent education program called "The First Years of Life" and compare it with some programs and educational services of similar content in America. We hope to ascertain whether "The First Years of Life," as presented by the Open University, affords a better means of providing information than some programs now existent in the United States offering prenatal and parent education.

Carl Hansen, Prairie Iconoclast, Donald K. Watkins Jan 1979

Carl Hansen, Prairie Iconoclast, Donald K. Watkins

The Bridge

In 1906 Ivar Kirkegaard, editor of the magazine Norden in Racine , Wisconsin, asked the writer Carl Hansen for personal information that might be included in a biographical sketch in the journal. Carl Hansen of Tyler, Minnesota, was forty-six at the time, and by his own count the author of some seventy sketches and short stories. In reply to Kirkegaard, Hansen revealed that in his student days in Copenhagen he has been caught up in the intellectual ferment of "the Modern Breakthrough," the assertive embrace by Scandinavian intellectuals of socially critical realism. "Det moderne gennembrud" had no single philosophical doctrine …

A Comparative Study Of Sophus Keith Winther And Carl Hansen, Rudolf J. Jensen Jan 1979

A Comparative Study Of Sophus Keith Winther And Carl Hansen, Rudolf J. Jensen

The Bridge

This short poem written by Carl Hansen expresses the essential conflicts of the Danish emigrant in the United States. In their relentless struggle to survive on the plains of the American midwest, two concerns dominated the consciousness of the emigrant. One was the continuous sense of doubt about the wisdom leaving the old country and the other was the necessarily unanswered question of whether the privations of their present life would be rewarded by the success of the following generations. The dreams and hopes of most Danish-American emigrants were in fact not fulfilled in accordance with their expectations. Neither the …

Danes Worldwide Archives Contains Treasures Of Immigrant Life, Marion Marzolf Jan 1979

Danes Worldwide Archives Contains Treasures Of Immigrant Life, Marion Marzolf

The Bridge

A typical four-room apartment in an average Danish neighborhood in Aalborg, Denmark, houses an extraordinary treasure for those interested in their Danish roots. It looks like an ordinary apartment from the outisde, but once the door is opened by Curator Inger Bladt, it is clear that housed here are the living memories of many of the 300,000 Danes who left their homeland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to seek work, land, fortune and fate in foreign countries, mainly the U.S.

Questioning Our Danish Heritage: The Evolution Of An Ethnic Identity, Otto N. Larsen Jan 1979

Questioning Our Danish Heritage: The Evolution Of An Ethnic Identity, Otto N. Larsen

The Bridge

Here we are over one-hundred persons ranging in age from 9 to 90 gathered for the first Pacific Northwest Danish Cultural Conference. Given the title of my remarks, I had better start with a question: why are we here?

The general answer must be that we are here to re-kindle the experience of our heritage, to learn more about it, and to enjoy our common bond. It is often said that whenever Danes get together they have a good time, even if they are melancholy about it.

The Fixed Frame And The Live Show, Johannes Knudsen Jan 1979

The Fixed Frame And The Live Show, Johannes Knudsen

The Bridge

Television has developed a trick of ending a story or a sequence by showing a fixed picture of the final frame, giving a rather vivid expression to the immediate or concluding situation. Sometimes this picture is amusing, even ludicrous, evoking a smile; sometimes a tear lingers on.

One Of Many, Dagmar Potholm Petersen Jan 1979

One Of Many, Dagmar Potholm Petersen

The Bridge

On an early spring evening in the year of 1891 a young man stood leaning against the rai I of the steamship Tekla of the Danish Tingvalla Line, his dark hair blowing in the breeze and his blue eyes riveted on the scene before him. He was entirely oblivious to the commotion around him, even to the boisterous calls of his shipmates, "We're there - at last we're there - soon we'll be picking up gold from the streets and licking honey from the trees."
