This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "New Migration Patterns Emerge in U.S.: The Movement of Metropolitan Populations to Nonmetropolitan America: Anomaly or Trend?" by David R. DiMartino.

Internal migration patterns have shifted markedly in the United States during the twentieth century. The exodus of rural populations to urban centers which dominated internal migration during the nineteenth century continued into the twentieth. By mid-century, however, that earlier pattern had given way to different, dominant trends. On the one hand, urban centers had grown massively and were sprawling rapidly out· ward, creating a pattern of decentralized metropolitan populations in …

Eastern Mysticism And The Sociology Of Knowledge: An Application Of Empirical Methodologies Of Mind To The Problem Of Ideology, Jeremy M. Brown

Sociology ETDs

This thesis seeks to explore the connections between mysticism and science, focusing particularly on the problems of ideological and cultural bias in the social sciences which traditional methodologies have been unable to overcome. The first and second chapters trace the development of Western science and the social sciences in an effort to define the "problem of ideology," or the problem of cultural, ideological and individual bias. Chapters three and four are devoted to the analysis of the developments of Eastern science and holistic "empirical methodologies of mind" and a re-evaluation of Eastern and Western traditions in light of historical, cultural, …

The Formation Of Desired And Ideal Family Size Among Utah High School Senior Females And Males, 1974, Linda Rose Hagen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study is to measure the direct and indirect relationships between socio-economic and demographic variables and ideal and desired family size preferences among male and female high school seniors in Utah in 1974. Furthermore, the analysis will be carried out separately for males and females in order to see if male and female ideal and desired family size preferences are influenced differently by the socio-economic and demographic variables. A model will be developed and tested of the process by which ideal and desired family size preferences are formulated.

The model used in the analysis is based upon …

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Change Develops in Migration Patterns: Destinations of Household Moves from the City of Omaha, 1975-76 and 1977-78," by Armin K. Ludwig.

American Migratory Patterns between 1970 and 1976 began to reflect a growing tendency for metropolitan counties (SMSA's)1 to suffer net migration losses and for nonmetropolitan counties to record net migration gains. The nonmetropolitan counties which had the largest net gains were those which are contiguous to an SMSA and which thus form a metropolitan fringe. This contiguity of SMSA and fringe suggests that a loss in a given SMSA is …

Implications Of Racism For Social Work Practice, Seymour Mirelowitz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines school and practice issues in social work in relationship to the concepts of ethnicity, minority groups, racism, and institutional racism. Operational definitions to establish conceptual clarity are also developed. The statistical aspects of progression vis-a-vis cultural diversity in social work institutions, enrollment in schools of social work, and representation on the faculty of schools of social work are studied. Social policy and the implementation of change in social work practice and education are then dealt with in relation to the current reality of the profession and the society in which it functions.
