[Review Of] Ronald H. Bayor. Neighbors In Conflict: The Irish, Germans, Jews And Italians Of New York City, 1929-1941, Carol Schoen
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In this study of a seldom-considered period of ethnic interaction, Bayor has provided a well-written and solidly researched appraisal of group conflict in New York City from 1929 to 1941. He has attempted to discover the reasons why conflict erupted between certain groups while others remained quiescent or were resolved.

[Review Of] Raymond L. Hall (Ed.). Ethnic Autonomy -- Comparative Dynamics: The Americas, Europe And The Developing World, Gary Y. Okihiro
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Hall has done us a service in putting together this wide-ranging collection of essays on ethnic separatist movements. The volume is particularly timely because of the twentieth century paradoxes of the drive for global unity and nationalism, and nationalism and a blossoming of ethnic separatist movements. (The book is not unique. See, 6.9. Chester L. Hunt and Lewis Walker, Ethnic Dynamics: Patterns of Intergroup Relations in Various Societies, Learning Publications, Inc., 1979.)

[Review Of] Russell W. Fridley. Historic Resources In Minnesota: A Report On Their Extent, Location, And Need For Preservation, Christian K. Skjervold
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
It is extremely difficult to review in any kind of a literary way a book which makes no pretense at being a literary work. Historic Resources is a report and a resource listing of what does exist. In addition to “what is” there are well thought out recommendations for what should be. The report deals with five broad areas of concern--Historical Organization and Museum Artifacts, Newspapers, Manuscripts, Historic Structures, and Archaeological Sites--which are and have been influenced by the work of the Minnesota Historical Society. In each of the sections there is a broad outline rationale for the existence of …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
1980 - Explorations begins a new decade. Surprise! In terms of the longevity of professional and scholarly journals, and statistically, the journal should have folded. Instead, Explorations moves ahead with optimism and starts the new decade with a sense of pride and accomplishment. If Explorations survives until January, 1990, we will know that Ethnic Studies has survived.
[Review Of] Buchi Emecheta . The Joys Of Motherhood, Janet Cheatham Bell
[Review Of] Buchi Emecheta . The Joys Of Motherhood, Janet Cheatham Bell
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Whether this novel is touting motherhood or not, the author certainly makes it clear that being a mother is not a simple or an easy task. The setting is Nigeria prior to, during and after World War II, but there is much here with which any woman can identify, particularly if she is, or has mated.

Cultural Community, Cohesion And Constraint: Dynamics Of Life Satisfaction Among Aged Filipino Men Of Hawaii, Wayne S. Wooden, J. H. Monane
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In contrast to other elderly Asian-Americans (notably Japanese Americans and Chinese Americans), relatively little is known about aged Filipino Americans (Kalish & Yuen, 1971). This may be partly a function of their population size, as the Filipino aged in America are considerably less numerous than the elderly Japanese and Chinese Americans; the 1970 U.S. Censes (Census) of the Population finds only 21,249 Filipinos aged 65 and over in the U.S., 82% of them men. In addition, low economic and political status, recency of arrival and relative lack of militancy may contribute to this inattention. Kalish and Moriwaki (1973), focusing on …
Salem Teen Mother Program: A Follow-Up Study, Frances L. Barton
Salem Teen Mother Program: A Follow-Up Study, Frances L. Barton
Dissertations and Theses
Society has, historically, reacted to teenage pregnancies with a mixture of embarrassment, apathy and neglect. It wasn't until the 1960's that an attempt was made to design and implement programs to meet the needs of pregnant adolescents. An example of such a program is the Salem Teen Mother Program. This program was begun in 1966 and is affiliated with the local YWCA. If offers a comprehensive program to approximately 150 students each year. The services it offers include day care, social services and counseling, education, health services, parenting skills and employment counseling.
The following chapters include a literature review which …
Alienation Under The Rainbow: A Survey Of Oregon Graduate Students, Robert Michael Travis
Alienation Under The Rainbow: A Survey Of Oregon Graduate Students, Robert Michael Travis
Dissertations and Theses
Nisbet's theory of alienation entails three propositions: 1) alienation is a unidimensional phenomenon; 2) alienation is a generalized phenomenon; and 3) power relations foster loss of community which engenders alienation. All three propositions were tested on a population of graduate students at a university in the Pacific Northwest.
Population Dynamics Of Nonmetropolitan Cities In Five Western States, Peter Carlton Munroe
Population Dynamics Of Nonmetropolitan Cities In Five Western States, Peter Carlton Munroe
Dissertations and Theses
Contrary to popular belief, small cities, located outside Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA's) and generally referred to as nonmetropolitan cities, have not been declining in population and withering away; rather, they have been growing and prospering in all regions of the country, albeit their growth varies considerably.
It is this variation in growth rates of nonmetropolitan places in the northwest (and the factors associated with this variation) which is the focus of this thesis. Research literature in this area indicates a reciprocal relationship between the nature of economic activities in nonmetropolitan cities and their growth patterns. In an attempt to …
Toward A Test For Ethnocentrism And Ethnorelativism Based Upon Reference Group Orientation, James C. Mayer
Toward A Test For Ethnocentrism And Ethnorelativism Based Upon Reference Group Orientation, James C. Mayer
Dissertations and Theses
The object of this investigation is to determine whether two aspects of reference group orientation, 1) multiplicity and 2) structural variation, are possible indicators of ethnocentrism. Most of the thesis is devoted to a theoretical formulation in which reference group orientation and ethnocentrism are placed in a peroeptual framework. Reference group orientation is defined as a person's use of a frame of reference that is formed through adoption of a reference group's perspective. Ethnocentrism is defined as a person's use of a frame of reference that keeps him from accepting the viability of other cultural frames of reference. The acceptance …

A Comparative Perspective On The Status Attainment Process Of White And Native American Youth, Leonard R. Decker
A Comparative Perspective On The Status Attainment Process Of White And Native American Youth, Leonard R. Decker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Status attainment, as commonly indicated by levels of educational and occupational achievement, is a complicated process. A variety of variables have been found to be quite influential in the determination of one's eventual position in the social hierarchy of American society. Research done jointly by William H. Sewell and Robert M. Hauser (1972, 1975) regarding the status attainment process has resulted in a Wisconsin model of Adolescent Achievement in which the authors have identified a number of experiences that have significant import for young people's post-high school educational and occupational attainments. The Sewell and Hauser model links socioeconomic origins and …
The Relationship Of Reported Sexual Activity And Reported Sexual Daydreaming In Unmarried College Men And Women, Barbara Stansell Lavery
The Relationship Of Reported Sexual Activity And Reported Sexual Daydreaming In Unmarried College Men And Women, Barbara Stansell Lavery
Masters Theses
Past research has suggested that cognitive imagery may serve to either enhance or diminish a subsequent overt behavior. In fact, imagery techniques are commonly used in therapy with the idea that these techniques affect behavior in a predictable way.
The present study was designed to determine whether measured frequencies of sexual daydreaming would correlate with measured frequencies of sexual activity. Gender groups were also compared to examine possible gender differences in the frequency of sexual daydreaming and sexual activity.
Thirty-eight male and 113 female students at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois were asked to respond to two self-report questionnaires. …
A Study Of School Achievement Among Elementary School Students With Working And Nonworking Mothers, Chi-Hung Hsieh
A Study Of School Achievement Among Elementary School Students With Working And Nonworking Mothers, Chi-Hung Hsieh
Masters Theses
Statement of Problem
Most parents face the question of whether the wife should seek employment outside the home during the years that their children are attending elementary school. Many families have no choice since the costs of daily living make it necessary to pursue a double income. A large portion of parents do, however, have a choice as to whether the mother should go to work. In many homes the second income goes toward obtaining some of the "extra-things" not normally available due to financial limitations.
Mothers who work outside of the home will have less time to stay home …

IN MOST AMERICAN CITIES during the first half of the twentieth century, the distance between worksite and residence tended to increase. This was due to improvements in transportation corridors, advances in real income, and availability of the automobile to the middle income class which correlated with the purchase of new homes in the suburbs. Traditionally, the journey to work took the labor force to areas in or near the central business district of the city. In the recent past, however, the movement away from these centers by industry, retail establishments, offices, and other users of downtown space has led to …

Results indicated that the training procedures were successful in significantly reducing rates of aversive parent behavior exhibited in the home across …
The Nature And Frequency Of Marital Problems Which Lead To Divorce In Tehran, Iran : As Perceived By Four Professional Groups, Parvin Habashi
The Nature And Frequency Of Marital Problems Which Lead To Divorce In Tehran, Iran : As Perceived By Four Professional Groups, Parvin Habashi
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Problem. During the past several decades Iranian society has undergone substantial change. Industrialization, urbanization, and universal education have been dynamic forces in changing Iranian society. Such factors may have influenced the structure and function of the family in Iran. In addition, and perhaps related to these factors, other developments occurred. The bond of kinship began to weaken and the neighborhood changed due to a trend toward the nuclear family. The solidarity of tradition was loosened. This was especially true in Tehranian society. One important development from these changes was a more active role by women in the society. Women …
The Effect Of Source-Message-Variants On Racial Attitude Change Among College Freshmen, Winfrey M. Ruffin, Jr.
The Effect Of Source-Message-Variants On Racial Attitude Change Among College Freshmen, Winfrey M. Ruffin, Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine how the racial attitudes of freshman students were reinforced or altered by variant stereotypic messages received from differing classroom instructors. A theoretical model and an associated set of propositions and hypotheses were formulated based on symbolic interactionism, consistency and dissonance theory, and information relating processes. The following research hypothesis was generated: Groups receiving variant messages, both as to source and content, will differ in the extent of change in the attitudes of their members toward persons of the opposite race. Twenty-six null hypotheses were formulated, covering different sourse [sic]-message variation as applied …

[Review Of] Toni Morrison. Song Of Solomon: The Flight Of Afro-American Life, Curtiss E. Porter
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Song of Solomon can only be viewed as a tribute to the artistic and cultural genius of Ms. Toni Morrison. I, as reviewer and want-to-be-rich writer, am studious and intent throughout my reading of her novel. I am amazed, gratified and satisfied. I am fully amazed that she pulls it through; this wealth of characterization and plot. This is a novel of growing into manhood. It is at once the tale of man-to-man relationships and man-to-woman relationships in the Afro-American community where there is an essential struggle simply to be: There is in Song of Solomon mystery, romance and intrigue. …

[Review Of] Louis Chu. Eat A Bowl Of Tea, C. L. Chua
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Louis Chu’s Eat a Bowl of Tea is the most recent addition (and a most welcome one) to the series of Asian-American classics that the University of Washington Press is reprinting in paperback format. Other titles in this series that come to mind are the uncompromisingly naturalistic memoirs of the Filipino-American Carlos Bulosan, America is in the Heart, and the gripping novel about a Japanese-American who resists the World War II draft, John Okada’s No-No Boy. Louis Chu’s novel, which had first appeared in 1961 to unappreciative and uncomprehending notices, is every bit as essential to the canon of Asian …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The National Association of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies (NAIES) is an organization dedicated towards finding solutions to some of the "Ethnic" problems which plague U.S. society. Some of these solutions are found when people from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and environmental backgrounds are brought together to communicate and discuss germinal ideas. To this end, the NAIES, in the recent past, has set up regional conferences in various parts of the United States. These regional conferences are a microcosm of the national conference. The regional conferences follow similar guidelines as set up for the national conferences. I attended one of these …
Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans, Masayuki Sato
Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans, Masayuki Sato
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
One priority of the Health Task group of the Conference on Pacific and Asian American Families (1978) was the need for research into the psychological and emotional problems of Pacific and Asian American (PAA) groups and their possible remedies. Specifically, the report identified the importance of shame in the education and socialization process of PAA families in controlling behavior. As a cultural characteristic among PAAs, shame or “saving face” remains an important concept to the individual, the family, the community, and to the racial group as a whole.

Critique [Of Back To The Basics: A New Challenge For The Black Church], Charles C. Irby
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Back to the Basics... is a provocative presentation which focuses on the role of the Black church as a socio—cultural, politico-economic institution in an historic context. Not focused in Williams' paper are the spiritual, religious aspects of the Black church, but the solutions proposed certainly lead toward a liberation theology. Williams' primary focus is on how the Black church, in a modern context, has drifted away from its original raison d'etre, and he attempts to show what can be done to restore the Black church, as an agent or institution for the people, to a position which serves the people.

Back To The Basics: A New Challenge For The Black Church, James H. Williams
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The development of the Black community in America witnessed the Black Church exercising the unique function of assisting Blacks to gain a measure of economic strength. The opinion is ventured by Fordham that one of the most powerful and influential institutions to evolve within the Black community in the post-Civil War era was the Black Church. It was more than a religious institution: it was social, political, and economic institution all in one. Its early mutual aid societies cared for the sick, aged, and disabled; buried the dead of indigent families; provided financial support for widows and orphans; made loans; …
