Linguistic Inclusion And Identity: A Sociolinguistic Perspective On Lgbtq+ Language Use, Brian Kapustka Apr 2025

Linguistic Inclusion And Identity: A Sociolinguistic Perspective On Lgbtq+ Language Use, Brian Kapustka

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article explores how American English can subtly dehumanize and marginalize LGBTQ+ individuals through linguistic practices such as nominalization, objectification, misused indefinite articles, euphemistic slurs, and gendered expressions. Drawing on Safe Zone facilitation and sociolinguistic theory, the paper argues that constructions like “a lesbian” reduce identity to a category, while idioms like “that’s so gay” and gendered humor reinforce heteronormative and misogynistic ideologies. The analysis further examines how terms like “female” are nominalized and weaponized in ways that dehumanize women, revealing deep-seated linguistic asymmetries tied to power hierarchies. Building on original insight and expanding with work by Zola (1993), Cameron …

Painting Stories And Filming Change, Coralynn V. Davis Apr 2025

Painting Stories And Filming Change, Coralynn V. Davis

Faculty Contributions to Books

Mithila Art has helped illuminate various aspects of the relationship between gendered Maithil social roles and Maithil women’s narratives in connection with a feminist participatory action research project conducted primarily in 2016-2017 in and around the northern Bihari town of Madhubani. While participatory action research philosophically and methodologically attends to process as much as product, Mithila Art played a role in the process and product of making a documentary film and in our capacity to understand and communicate with varied audiences about shifting Maithil gender norms. The research and filmic project provided insight into the complex relationship among the stories …

Harnessing A Paradox Mindset To Straddle Two Worlds: The Relationship Between Paradox Mindset And Professional, Social, And Well-Being Outcomes Via Identity Integration Among Low-Ses College Students, Xiaoyu Dai Apr 2025

Harnessing A Paradox Mindset To Straddle Two Worlds: The Relationship Between Paradox Mindset And Professional, Social, And Well-Being Outcomes Via Identity Integration Among Low-Ses College Students, Xiaoyu Dai

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Low-SES college students often face contradictory demands and expectations as they navigate between their home and college environments. Grounded in prior evidence demonstrating the benefits of a paradox mindset—characterized by “both/and” thinking and a tendency to accept, value, and feel comfortable with tensions—in situations that involve contradictions, this research hypothesized that a paradox mindset promotes professional, relational, and well-being outcomes among low-SES college students. Importantly, SES-college identity integration, defined as perceived blendedness and harmony between one’s socioeconomic class identity and college student identity, was proposed as a key mediating mechanism underlying these benefits. Three studies were conducted with low-SES undergraduate …

Redefining "I Do": Marital Attitudes Among Generation Z, Ryley G. Bethle

Senior Theses

This thesis attempts to explain the attitudes of Generation Z toward marriage. In a larger sense, to also understand previous generational cohorts’ marital values to discover that these values are shaped by changes in technology, individualism, and societal norms. Mapping Organizational Theory With Scripts, Jose Eos R. Trinidad Apr 2025

Mapping Organizational Theory With Scripts, Jose Eos R. Trinidad

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

Organizational theory has developed in numerous directions that have been difficult to integrate. This review synthesizes them into seven perspectives, with theories focused within and beyond the organization (i.e., intra- and extra-organizational dynamics). It proposes the acronym SCRIPTS: structure, culture, relations, institutions, professions, transformation, and social conflict. Within organizations, structure focuses on theories of bureaucracy, management, routines, and decision-making while culture focuses on shared values, identity, climate, and sensemaking. Relations involve studies of interpersonal and interorganizational networks. Institutions focus on the macro-dynamics of fields and isomorphism, and micro-dynamics of entrepreneurship and inhabited institutions. Professions refer to psychological factors shaping individual …

Long Live The Good King: Arthur’S Niebuhrian Kingship And Pursuit Of Justice In The Once And Future King, Camille Bewley

Harding Undergraduate Research Conference

The classic The Once and Future King, written by T.H. White, is a selection of four fantasy novels with one, linear plot: the story of Arthur, the mythological King of England. Reinhold Niebuhr’s book Moral Man and Immoral Society details the Christian realism of a world in need of justice without the ability to achieve perfect application. Through good education, Arthur is well endowed with Niebuhr’s requirements for a functional society: knowledge, honor, wisdom, and compassion. Such king-like qualities make him one of the most influential mythological characters in history, and a grand exemplar for maintaining ethical goals and personal …

Does Name, Image, And Likeness Increase Gender Inequality In College Athletics?, Aimee Christenson Apr 2025

Does Name, Image, And Likeness Increase Gender Inequality In College Athletics?, Aimee Christenson

Political Science Theses and Capstones

In June of 2021, the National Collegiate Athletic Association adopted its first interim policy regarding Name, Image, and Likeness. From here, college athletes have been able to benefit from opportunities regarding their brand as an athlete. While this development has been historic in its expansion of rights to athletes, it highlights the inequities between male and female athletes. Title IX requires equal opportunity for male and female students. This research raises questions about whether NIL is increasing the disparity between male and female athletes. To answer this question, I looked at NIL data collected by Kyle Ems on the NIL …

- Suggests that communication patterns related to attachment impact relationship satisfaction (Domingue & Mollen, 2009). -Latinx cultural values influence attachment-related conflict behaviors and relationship satisfaction (Guerrido, 2017). -Secure attachment leads to healthier conflict resolution and greater satisfaction (Pistole, 1989). The purpose is to analyze existing research on how attachment styles impact conflict resolution strategies in romantic relationships and determine whether cultural background (Latinx vs. non-Latinx) and relationship length influence these behaviors. Hypotheses H1: The quality of a relationship is mentioned more frequently than other themes when examining previous literature. H2: Cultural influences are discussed more frequently than relationship length in …
