Prior to the American Revolutionary War (1775-1883), tensions rose as American colonial smugglers circumvented British taxes. By the onset of the conflict, Continental General George Washington faced a daunting British military invasion. Washington's strategy to outmaneuver and tire enemy forces necessitated a way to anticipate incoming attacks. Thus, he looked to espionage, but found few colonists with professional experience. So who would have the deceptive skills to fulfill the task? An exploration of Washington’s dilemma provides compelling evidence explaining how the colonial smugglers who started the war became the Patriot spies who ended it.

Why Do Some Terrorist Attacks Receive More Media Attention Than Others?, Erin M. Kearns, Allison E. Betus, Anthony F. Lemieux

Terrorist attacks often dominate news coverage as reporters seek to provide the public with information. Yet, not all incidents receive equal attention. Why do some terrorist attacks receive more media coverage than others? We argue that perpetrator religion is the largest predictor of news coverage, while target type, being arrested, and fatalities will also impact coverage. We examined news coverage from LexisNexis Academic and CNN.com for all terrorist attacks in the United States between 2006 and 2015 (N=136). Controlling for target type, fatalities, and being arrested, attacks by Muslim perpetrators received, on average, 357% more coverage than other attacks. Our …

This essay was greatly inspired by a 15" film titled Tiny Katerina, which shows glimpses of Katerina from two- to four-and-a-half years of age. She lives with her parents and older brother in Northwestern Siberia in the taiga. The Khanty-speaking people live by foraging (berries, for example), fishing and herding reindeer; they are semi-nomadic. In their camp and the vicinity, there is no evidence of electricity or any other public service. This article brings sociological theory of governmentality to bear on a longitudinal analysis of American presidential speeches to theorize the formation of the citizen-consumer subject. The 40-year historical analysis which expands through four economic recessions and the presidential terms of Ronald Reagan, William J. Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Hussein Obama, illustrates the ways in which the national mythology of American Dream myth has been linked to the political ideology of the state to create the citizen-consumer subject in the United States. Western society’s intractable social and environmental problems arise outside the bounds of classical liberal ideation, challenging the utilitarian rationality, decision-making faculty, and popular legitimacy of our liberal institutions. Through a qualitative analysis of three collaborative, community-based institutions, this study aims to identify and illuminate alternative conceptions and organizational relationships, which transcend liberal shortcomings and succeed precisely where liberal institutions have failed. Edward Said’s 1987 examination of Orientalism suggests that fields of learning are constrained and acted upon by society, cultural traditions, worldly circumstance, and by stabilizing influences. According to Said these fields of learning work to sustain Western notions of superiority and designate what became considered backwards, degenerate, and uncivilized: the Oriental. การวิจัยเรื่อง แบบจำลองการคาดคะเนปัจจัยที่เป็นข้อบ่งชี้ลักษณะอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในสังคมไทย มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการวิจัยเพื่อ (1) ศึกษาปัญหาอาชญากรรมลูกผสมที่เป็นปัญหาสำคัญในสังคมไทย (2) สร้างแบบจำลองการคาดคะเนปัจจัยที่เป็นข้อบ่งชี้ลักษณะอาชญากรรมลูกผสมที่ใช้ในการจำแนก และอธิบายความสัมพันธ์และ/หรือหลักฐานในการยอมรับว่าเป็นอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในสังคมไทย และ (3) ศึกษาแนวทางในการป้องกันและแก้ไขปัญหาอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในสังคมไทย ผู้วิจัยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยแบบผสมผสานของการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณและเชิงคุณภาพ โดยเน้นการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณเป็นหลักสำคัญจากเจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ปฏิบัติงาน สำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ และเจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ปฏิบัติงาน กรมสอบสวนคดีพิเศษ จำนวน 400 คน ซึ่งใช้วิธีการเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างจากการสุ่มกลุ่มตัวอย่างแบบง่าย เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยเป็นแบบสอบถามที่ผู้วิจัยสร้างขึ้น (IOC = 0.868, Reliability = 0.981) วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยการหาค่า ความถี่ ร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยบ่งชี้ลักษณะอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในสังคมไทยโดยใช้ตัวแบบสมการเชิงโครงสร้าง ในส่วนของการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ใช้เทคนิคการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้ปฏิบัติงานระดับผู้บริหารหน่วยงานภาครัฐที่เกี่ยวข้องกับปัญหาอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในสังคมไทย จำนวน 15 คน ซึ่งใช้วิธีการเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างแบบเจาะจง เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยเป็นแบบสัมภาษณ์แบบกึ่งโครงสร้าง วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยวิธีการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา เพื่ออธิบายและยืนยันความถูกต้องของข้อมูลที่ได้จากการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ รวมทั้งเป็นส่วนเสริมหรือส่วนเติมเต็มความสมบูรณ์ถูกต้องของงานวิจัย ผลการวิจัย พบว่า ปัญหาอาชญากรรมในสังคมไทยมีการปรับเปลี่ยนรูปแบบด้านปัญหาอาชญากรรมลูกผสมอยู่ในระดับมาก (ค่าเฉลี่ย = 4.18) ซึ่งเป็นอาชญากรรมมากกว่ารูปแบบเดียว ที่เกิดจากการผสมผสานกันระหว่างอาชญากรรมรูปแบบเดิมและอาชญากรรมรูปแบบใหม่ เป็นอาชญากรรมลูกผสมพื้นฐาน อาชญากรรมลูกผสมขั้นสูง อาชญากรรมลูกผสมอื่น ๆ และในอนาคต โดยปรากฏลักษณะสำคัญของปัญหาอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในมิติด้านต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ ผู้กระทำผิดหรืออาชญากรมีการรวมตัวกันเป็นเครือข่าย/องค์กรมากขึ้น ข้ามรัฐ/ไร้พรมแดน พึ่งพาเทคโนโลยี วิธีการที่หลากหลาย/ซับซ้อน ส่งผลกระทบในวงกว้าง ไม่จำกัดช่วงเวลาและสถานที่ สร้างการเลียนแบบ เข้าถึงเป้าหมายได้ง่าย ไม่จำเป็นต้องเผชิญหน้ากับเป้าหมาย คุ้มค่ามากที่สุดในการก่อเหตุต่อครั้ง เกี่ยวข้องกับการใช้ชีวิตประจำวัน ติดตามตัวผู้กระทำผิดมาลงโทษได้ยาก ทำให้สูญเสียบุคลากรและงบประมาณจำนวนมากในการปราบปราม ป้องกันและแก้ไข ซึ่งการสร้างแบบจำลองการคาดคะเนปัจจัยบ่งชี้ลักษณะอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในสังคมไทยตามสมมติฐาน มีความสัมพันธ์กับข้อมูลเชิงประจักษ์ (p-value = 0.881, Chi-square / df = 0.920, CFI = 0.95, GFI = 0.96, AGFI = 0.95, RMSEA = 0.000, SRMR = 0.040) สรุปได้ว่า ปัญหาอาชญากรรมลูกผสมในสังคมไทยได้รับอิทธิพลรวม …

The purpose of this study is to explore how racism is transmitted and reproduced within digital communities, and how humor is being used to frame racist discourse in virtual spaces. Digitally, internet memes are widely used rhetorical vehicles, reaching large and broad audiences. The roles these artifacts play in the reproduction and transmission of racist ideology is often obfuscated by the perception that internet memes are "just jokes." Criminal sentencing in the United States has shifted over the years. This paper outlines the current role morality plays in the sentencing and punishment of criminals. Recent work in moral psychology points the way to a better approach. Jonathan Haidt’s moral matrices, from his book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, provide a signpost for more efficacious treatment of those on parole or under community supervision, overall contributing to the reduction of recidivism. In sum, Haidt’s work in moral psychology could lead to fairer sentencing and more effective treatment.

Nyoongar people have lived in the South West of Western Australia for at least 50,000 years. During that time, they experienced significant climate change, including wide variations in temperature and rainfall, and hundreds of metres’ difference in sea levels. Nyoongar people have a long memory, and climate change is described in their stories and in the knowledge they hold about how life was lived in earlier times. There are artifacts and places that have been manipulated to be productive despite severe drought. Studies of the onset of genocide and accompanying early warning and forecasting efforts have focused almost exclusively on states. This article suggests that genocide prediction must move beyond a purely state-centric approach. Specifically, I suggest three major avenues that will refine and complement existing research and related prediction efforts. These include 1) theorizing and analyzing non-state actors who commit genocide, 2) engaging in conflict-centered approaches, and 3) addressing the onset and triggers of genocide within subnational spaces. I conclude with a discussion of how these three avenues can be pursued simultaneously to inform more robust genocide prevention endeavors.

Originally written for a conference on meat attended by farmers, anthropologists, people involved in cultural affairs, and other members of the public, and seeking to avoid emphasis on cultural difference, this paper explores common ground between Euro-American and Amerindian ambivalence about meat consumption. Meat-eating raises two shared concerns: an intuitive recognition of the resemblances between humans and animals and an uncomfortable awareness that human life often depends on the death and destruction of other living beings. Within masculinity scholarship, there is a gap about how masculinity carries over from a broad social context to an organizational context. This article explores the construction and capitalization of masculinity through a series of experiences in social fields such as the military and college, and the transfer of militaristic masculinity into the workplace. Drawing on grounded theory methods, we conducted in-depth interviews with 20 Korean men who completed their mandatory two-year military service and subsequently joined large corporations in Korea.
