Reading Photographs In Colonial History: A Case Study From Fiji, 1872, Brigitte D’Ozouville

Pacific Studies

This essay explores the significance of a photographic triptych, ca. 1872, pasted on a colonial-era photographic album about Fiji. The author argues that these photographs are reliable documents of referent questions that go beyond the aesthetic effect of photography, the new impact of the medium, and the European curiosity developed for the representation of the “savage.” First, the content of these images are examined within the context of the Fijian colonial history, that is, their “signifiant” in Barthes’s terms. But the interpretation of this triptych is extended further in light of our present knowledge of photography and its use in …

Ai Matai is the official history of the Fiji military’s participation in the Malaya Emergency, written by Tevita Nawadra. What ought to be a milestone in Fijian historiography in fact has had little public or academic impact. Publication in the Fijian language and poor distribution have created a small readership that is largely local. Further official military histories are currently being researched in Fiji, and the experience of Ai Matai provides useful lessons and warnings about how to and how not to go about such projects. This study is a metatheoretical analysis of the white extremist movement in the United States. Five separate major and several smaller white extremist organizations were examined with respect to updated information as to the organizational levels, membership profiles and activities of: (1) the Ku Klux Klan, (2) the Militia, (3) Skinheads, (4) Aryan Nations, (5) the Neo-Nazi and (6) other organizations.

Several theories developed by foundational, developmental and contemporary sociologists were analyzed for their individual concepts. Pertinent and significant concepts were noted as being applicable to a theory of white extremism. Specific examples of the concepts' usage within the extremist …

A fortnight after the Philippine Senate ratified the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GAT) and three days before the annual observance of national hero Jose Rizal's martyrdom, the intertwining of body and nation was given visual expression by a libidinous prankster. This study addresses the need for educational research specific to rural populations of American Indians and their non-Indian neighbors. In order to provide answers to both theoretical and practical questions, a survey was conducted with a random sample of rural residents living within a twenty-five mile radius of a rural, tribal institution of higher education. The structured interviews gathered data regarding attitudes, aspirations, expectations, and perceived barriers. Analyses of the data indicate that this population has strong, positive attitudes toward higher education and aspires to a college education in spite of real and perceived barriers. This field study of the growth and development of street gangs was conducted in the spring of 1996 at a medium security prison utilizing a semi-structured interview with 69 inmates who were known present or former gang members. Since the sample was taken from a population of convicted felons, the results reflect the environment of the participants and may not be representative of gang members as a whole.

The field study determined that the majority of the participants came from two parent homes, had joined the gang between the ages of 9 and 15, lacked positive male role models, and …

To date, the scholarship covering the Black Codes has centered on these laws' role as the predecessor of Jim Crow. Little study has been given to the laws as a whole--the one encompassing work being Theodore Wilson's Black Codes of the South. Other studies have examined the Black Codes' effect on specific states; however, no specific study has been done on the Black Codes of Kentucky and Tennessee nor has any study been made of these laws' relation to the antebellum Slave Code. This paper examines systemic contexts for symbol use among the Maa-speaking Il Chamus in the Lake Baringo region of west-central Kenya. The systemic context for symbols and material culture consists of the environmental constraints and behavioral responses that characterize pastoralist life in East Africa. The author's interest in this problem developed in response to Ian Hodder’s work among the Il Chamus, Pokot, and Tugen in the Baringo District. Unlike Hodder, however, the author argues that symbols and their use in East Africa can be more productively explained from a materialist perspective. Interpersonal violence is a common social problem in American society. Heightened interest in the topic of domestic violence has been sweeping the country as a result of conscience-raising efforts by the feminist movement and others in the late 1960s and early 1970s (White & Koss, 1991).
