Defeminizing Social Policy, David Stoesz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social policy initiatives by the evangelical right and neoconservative movements are reversing liberal programs that have benefited women. This represents an attempt to defeminize social policy. Essential to this transformation are theoretical interpretations of economics and sociology which, combined with religious conservatism, portend the restoration of patriarchal culture. The ideology guiding the defeminizing of social policy is so pervasive as to suggest that regaining ground lost will be exceedingly difficult for those promoting social services for women.

The Conservative program strikes deeply at the institutions that support the economic independence and security of women. This paper reviews social welfare budget cuts, the relaxation of affirmative action and workplace health and safety rules, and the social issues agenda of the New Right for their impact on women's economic, social and political status. It describes how the Reagan Administration's economic recovery program victimizes women, especially minority women. This paper is a study in the assimilation of Korean-Americans in Vancouver, Washington. The objectives of the study are to: 1. Evaluate the applicability of the concept of the "melting pot"; 2. Locate the factors that affect this process; and 3. Measure the degree of assimilation in orientation to American life. Generally speaking, one's ethnic loyalty and self-identity affect his lifestyle and choice of reference group.

KWRRI Research Reports

The research reported is based on a holistic sociocultural study of a popular regional recreation site in Eastern Kentucky, the Red River Gorge. Our research with over 3200 recreational visitors to the Gorge, 395 members of four recreation/conservation groups, 44 local landowners, and with a large number of management personnel from various governmental agencies permits us to provide an especially comprehensive overview of the problems and prospects of this popular area. Our general purpose is to provide descriptive and analytic information that will allow managers to more effectively understand and cope with their work in Red River Gorge.

"The National Indian Lutheran Board has finished another busy and very productive year of operation. During this last year our involvement has continued in terms of promoting positive national policy, work with different Lutheran constituencies, participating with other ethnic groups, continuation of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) grant program, and working as a co-worker with other national Indian organizations.''

That's how Paul Schultz began his annual president's report to the NILB board. More than two dozen board members and consultants attended the three day meeting at Cook Christian Training School in Tempe, AZ.

I have read with interest the response by Graham Henderson of the Toronto Humane Society (lnt J Stud Anim Prob 2(6):305-309, 1981). I agree with many of his statements and am pleased that he, in turn, agreed with most of mine, although at first, this was not entirely apparent. In fact, I found Mr. Henderson's letter to be somewhat confusing, and it contained a number of inaccuracies and contradictions. So, please bear with me if I go into some detail to try to unravel the confusion.

Attitudes Toward Animal Suffering: An Exploratory Study, John Braithwaite, Valerie Braithwaite

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

A total of 302 undergraduates in the social sciences and the humanities, at two Australian universities, were given a questionnaire designed to explore public attitudes toward animal suffering. The results, though preliminary, strongly suggest that attitudes may be in great part supportive of animal welfare and animal rights. However, as reflected in the answers to the questionnaire, actual behavior does not always follow suit. The recommendation is made that the animal welfare/animal rights movement should perhaps place more emphasis on raising people's awareness of the inconsistencies between their attitudes toward animals and their behavior concerning them.

On November 23, 1981, in a Maryland District Court, Dr. Edward Taub was found guilty under a Maryland state anti-cruelty statute of not providing adequate veterinary care for 6 of the 17 monkeys confiscated from his laboratory 2 months earlier. The case has received extensive press coverage and has also caused widespread alarm in the scientific community. According to Science (274:121, 1981 ), "scientists throughout the country have been shocked by the Taub case, initially perceiving it as a bid by antivivisectionists to procure a court ruling against animal experimentation." Comparative Slave Systems: An Economic Analysis Of Sugar Production In Jamaica And Louisiana, Martin J. Eisenberg

In order to compare slave productivity, this study analyzes institutional and demographic features underlying slavery in Jamaica and Louisiana in the early Nineteenth Century. Louisiana planters recieved slaves from the interregional redistribution of slaves in the United States. Migration estimates are calculated for the population moving out of Virginia and the population moving into Louisiana. These estimates and demographic data on the populations that do not migrate are used to refute the slave breeding hypothesis. Jamaican population growth in the absence of slave imports is examined with an effort to explain why Jamaica's population was incapable of reproducing itself. This …

Historically, scientific racism has provided reinforcement for maintaining the status quo. Researchers who sought to discover and explain racial difference in intelligence generally operated from a functionalist or social facts paradigm. Gilbert Gonzalez shows that “Racism was essentially an ideological explanation for the social structure, and did not affect the distribution of property, but rationalized that distribution.“ In sum, scientific racism indicated that the social structure was based on the genetic make-up of racial categories.

In the 1920s and 1930s the Mexican school age population increasingly participated in the educational system of the US. Meanwhile, many first experiences of these children with the state came in the form of educational research. The intelligence testing movement had a brief history before then, one which was gathering much momentum and greatly encouraged by corporate foundations and the cooperation of university administrations. The rapid immigration in the 1920s and settlement of Mexicans into colonias of the Southwest coincided with the rise of academic research and publications on racial intelligence as well as with the combination of mass compulsory …
