Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen Jan 1991

Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen

The Bridge

If you mix cowboys, Indians, Danes and paint, you come up with two remarkable artists, Olaf Seltzer and Olaf Wieghorst. These two men came to America from Denmark and, after living and working here for numbers of years, produced art that is as American as American art can get. Their subject was the Old West. Although their trips were 27 years apart, both Seltzer and Wieghorst came to America in their teens. Both worked at other occupations until they had developed the skills necessary to survive as artists. Both chose the West as their subject matter; both were named Olaf; …

Intimacy Outside Of The Natural Family: The Limits Of Privacy, Martha Albertson Fineman Jan 1991

Intimacy Outside Of The Natural Family: The Limits Of Privacy, Martha Albertson Fineman

Faculty Articles

In this paper I undertake a very pragmatic and focused consideration of whether it is possible to rework existing legal concepts of privacy in a way that would be ideologically compatible with dominant social norms in order to shield single mothers from excessive state regulation and supervision. I ultimately conclude that my desire to protect the decisionmaking autonomy and the dignity of poor and/or single mothers cannot be satisfied by resort to this area of law. At the constitutional level, this is so because notions of privacy are typically articulated as rights belonging to individuals, not family entities. And …

The Effect Of Age Misreporting In China On The Calculation Of Mortality Rates At Very High Ages, Ansley J. Coale, Shaomin Li Jan 1991

The Effect Of Age Misreporting In China On The Calculation Of Mortality Rates At Very High Ages, Ansley J. Coale, Shaomin Li

Management Faculty Publications

When mortality rates by age are calculated from recorded deaths and enumerated populations, rates at higher ages are typically in error because of misstated ages. Mortality rates for China in 1981 have been calculated from the number of deaths in 1981 in each household recorded in the 1982 census, and from the census population back-projected one year. Because age was determined from date of birth, and because persons of the Chinese culture have very precise knowledge of date of birth, the mortality rates even at high ages should be unusually accurate. This expectation is fulfilled for most of China, but …

Victorian Ideology And The Discourse Of Gender In Thomas Hardy's The Woodlanders And The Return Of The Native, Juliana Payne Jan 1991

Victorian Ideology And The Discourse Of Gender In Thomas Hardy's The Woodlanders And The Return Of The Native, Juliana Payne

Theses : Honours

This analysis will focus on the perceived harmony or disjunction between Hardy's representation of women in his fiction, and the middle class ideologies of gender difference and sexuality during what is referred to as the Victorian period, roughly the 1840s to the 1880s. The parameters of the dominant middle class ideology are established, as certain ideas will be held to be predominant or widely accepted at a given time. The aim of this thesis is to ascertain to what extent Hardy subverts the dominant ideology, and how he is involved in contesting the conventional contemporary representations of women. Part of …

Parenting Factors, Social Skills, And Value Commitments As Precursors To School Failure, Involvement With Deviant Peers, And Delinquent Behavior, Ronald L. Simons, Les B. Whitbeck, Rand D. Conger, Katherine J. Conger Jan 1991

Parenting Factors, Social Skills, And Value Commitments As Precursors To School Failure, Involvement With Deviant Peers, And Delinquent Behavior, Ronald L. Simons, Les B. Whitbeck, Rand D. Conger, Katherine J. Conger

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Elements of social control theory were combined with social learning theory to construct a model of delinquency which specifies the manner in which parenting factors, social skills, value commitments, and problems in school contribute to association with deviant peers and involvement in delinquent behavior. The model was tested using a sample of 61 families, each of which included a seventh grader. Questionnaire responses and coded videotaped family interaction were employed as measures of study constructs. The results largely supported the proposed model.

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen Jan 1991

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Technology, as a form of knowledge, can be an important explanatory variable in empirical sociological investigations. In this thesis the macrohistorical concept of technology within the discipline of sociology is traced and critiqued, with special attention given to analytical misconceptions and reifications, e.g., confusing technology with its processes, products, and social consequences. An analytical model is initially presented which attempts to facilitate a better understanding of the dialectical interrelationships between technological, social, and natural (scientific) phenomena. Recent attempts to measure the effects of technology on social relationships are critiqued, particularly in their inadequate conceptualization and operationalization, confusion of cause and …

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer Nov 1990

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer

School K-12

Dropout prevention is a major concern of school districts throughout the country. In Los Angeles it is estimated that 39% of students fail to graduate from high school. Nationwide, the rate is not too much different, especially in inner city communities where large numbers of Hispanic and African-American youth attend school. While dropout rates have been traditionally high for decades, people continue to ask, why? Many billions of dollars have been spent trying to answer this question and many programs have been developed which attempt to address some of these problems. No one has come up with a comprehensive answer …
