The Importance Of The Concept Of Conscience-Collective In Emile Durkheim's Thought: A Theoretical And Historical Analysis, James Ridenour-Jones May 1994

The Importance Of The Concept Of Conscience-Collective In Emile Durkheim's Thought: A Theoretical And Historical Analysis, James Ridenour-Jones

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

One of the most important contributions to the discipline of sociology was Emile Durkheim's theoretical discussion of the collective conscience. For Durkheim, it was the collective conscience—the common ways of defining the world, as well as the common moral bond between people—that provided the initial foundation for social solidarity. It was the glue that kept society organized and functioning. While Durkheim's discussion of the collective conscience is a landmark contribution to sociology, it is clear that the idea of collective definitions and representations predates Durkheim. One of the purposes of this theoretical study is to demonstrate how indebted Durkheim's thinking …

A Marxian Review Of Gerontological Literature, Stephen M. Marson, L. Richard Della Fave May 1994

A Marxian Review Of Gerontological Literature, Stephen M. Marson, L. Richard Della Fave

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A major concern for the sociology of aging and social gerontology is the lack of theoretical rigor. In particular, Birren and Bengtson (1988) describe all of social gerontology as "data-rich but theory-poor." In an effort to deal with the lack of theory, this essay reviews the general social gerontology literature from a Marxian perspective. The findings suggest that the Marxian framework can illuminate aspects of social gerontology hitherto left unexamined in both the academic and applied arenas.

The Effects Of Organizational Culture On Quality Of Life For Older Veterans, Michelle Diane Stone Apr 1994

The Effects Of Organizational Culture On Quality Of Life For Older Veterans, Michelle Diane Stone

Dissertations

The organizational culture in a Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC) was described using triangulated methods which included both secondary quantitative survey data, and internal documentary data sources. The initial survey data collected, from staff and elder veterans revealed an overall positive perception from both samples regarding the quality of life for elder veterans living on extended care wards. The study investigated the extent to which the VAMC's organizational culture affected these perceptions of quality of life.

Documentary data were collected from a variety of VAMC sources regarding behaviors, ideologies, leadership trends, mechanisms of control, and the formal organizational structure. A …

Daubert V. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc.: Epistemiology And Legal Process, Margaret G. Farrell Apr 1994

Daubert V. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc.: Epistemiology And Legal Process, Margaret G. Farrell

Cardozo Law Review

Justice Blackmun's majority opinion in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc. acknowledges that law and science have different goals, but it fails to recognize the implications of those differences for legal process. Recent increases in the scientifically-based claims brought in the federal courts, and in the size and complexity of the litigation in which such claims are made, have raised the stakes in the debate. At the same time, scientific concepts of relativity, uncertainty, and multiple causation are at odds with simple, legal notions about fact-finding and cause and effect. This disparity between legal and scientific understandings over the admission …

Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson Jan 1994

Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson

Clinical Sociology Review

Interactionist concepts and explanations of human behavior prevalent among major psychological theory groups are traced in relationship to the symbolic interactionist principles of emergence, voluntarism, and process. I argue that most theory central to psychology is interactionist in nature; that central tenets of symbolic interactionism are woven throughout psychological theory; and that the same interactionist premises can equally form the foundation for clinical sociology as a form of sociological practice.

Toward A Three-Dimensional Model Of Suicide, Kimberly A. Folse, Dennis L. Peck Jan 1994

Toward A Three-Dimensional Model Of Suicide, Kimberly A. Folse, Dennis L. Peck

Clinical Sociology Review

Cases collected from medical examiner's records are used to assess a three-dimensional model of failure suicide. The data are suggestive that youthful suicide can be explained in part as a reaction to perceived failure, the perception that significant others fail to provide succor, and the belief that others also view the individual as a failure. Implications of the findings are discussed in light of the proposed model.

Predicting The Past, Recounting The Future: Human Ecology And A Prehistory Of Consciousness, Paul Faulstich Jan 1994

Predicting The Past, Recounting The Future: Human Ecology And A Prehistory Of Consciousness, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

This paper is concerned with the organic derivation and primary meaning of Pleistocene finger flutings; I propose that in order to gain insight into the significance of the flutings, we must attempt an understanding of the physical and mental contexts in which they emerged. I suggest that finger flutings provided a cultural record in the Pleistocene which documented thought and action, and made it ready for reflection. Through the process of finger fluting, the human 'self' was objected and reality was modified in the experience of self-consciuosness. I argue that finger flutings, like language, were employed to discover and convey …

Grasslands - The Forgotten Resource : The Cultural Ecology Of The Central California Grasslands, Joanna M. Blume Jan 1994

Grasslands - The Forgotten Resource : The Cultural Ecology Of The Central California Grasslands, Joanna M. Blume

Research Manuscript Series

A significant part of the ecological makeup of Central California is composed of grasslands. The vegetation that grew within this environment provided important food and material resources for the Native Americans of the area, particularly the Ohlone and the Yokuts. Grasslands, although a secondary resource, were an extremely important food source both directly and indirectly. The Native Americans possessed an intimate knowledge of nature, living in harmony with the earth and learning a great deal regarding the behavior of animals, and the properties, characteristics, and uses of plants. Applying this knowledge, they modified these resources to enhance their productivity.·

Diploma Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Poverty, Elizabeth Louise Phillips Jan 1994

Diploma Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Poverty, Elizabeth Louise Phillips

Masters Theses

According to King, stereotyped perceptions may interfere with nurse-client transactions. Therefore, nurses' should possess attitudes which enable them to care for individuals who live in poverty. A descriptive correlational design was used to examine first year and second year diploma nursing students' attitudes toward individuals living in poverty. It was hypothesized that second year diploma nursing students would demonstrate a more positive attitude toward those living in poverty than first year diploma nursing students.; A convenience sample of diploma nursing students (N = 102) completed the "Attitudes about Poverty and Poor Peoples" scale utilized to assess students' attitudes (Atherton et …

[Review Of] James B. Mckee. Sociology And The Race Problem: The Failure Of A Perspective, Vernon J. Williams Jr

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In his sweeping study of the treatment of African Americans in American sociology from the 1920s until the 1960s, James B. McKee, a professor emeritus of sociology at Michigan State University, concludes that sociologists "need to revive an older democratic commitment to speak to a larger public that includes and cuts across the conflicting racial identities whose fates are inexorably bound together in the same historical struggles" (366-7).

Gender Inequalities And Demographic Behavior: Ghana/Kenya, Anastasia J. Gage, Wamucii Njogu Jan 1994

Gender Inequalities And Demographic Behavior: Ghana/Kenya, Anastasia J. Gage, Wamucii Njogu

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Ghana and Kenya were the first countries in sub-Saharan Africa whose governments recognized the potentially detrimental effects of rapid population growth on economic development and, as a result, adopted and implemented national population policies. This is one of three reports on the relationship between gender equity, family structure and dynamics, and the achievement of reproductive choice that was prepared by the Population Council for the 1994 International Year of the Family and the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. These reports provide critical reviews of the relationship between gender inequality and demographic behavior in three demographically significant, culturally distinct …
