When Parents Come Out As Parents Of Gay And Lesbian Children: A Transformation Of The Self., Crissy E. Stewart
When Parents Come Out As Parents Of Gay And Lesbian Children: A Transformation Of The Self., Crissy E. Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how and why parents of gay and lesbian children come to join a support and advocacy group when same-sex attraction and sexuality are still considered deviant and immoral by the majority of society. Based on participant observation of and interviews with parents in two separate support and advocacy groups this study examines how parents come to define themselves in terms of the issues they are fighting for, in this case gay and lesbian acceptance, inclusion, and equality. This research also examines how parents formulate new religious convictions to satisfy their new parental role as supporter and advocate …

The Impact Of Social Stereotypes As They Relate To Training Practices Of Female Athletes Competing In High-Risk Sports, Lisa Ciaravella
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
This study was conducted to investigate if a lack of conditioning and the increased rate of injury among female athletes are due primarily to social stereotypes associated with women's athletics. Ten professional female basketball players and ten high school basketball player were surveyed to determine how strength training is conceptualized and what role strength training had played in injury prevention. The study revealed that the increased rate of injury among female athletes are due to time constraints and/or lack of emphasis on strength and conditioning imposed on the athletes themselves for reasons of not strength training as opposed to social …
Fear Of Crime And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement Among American Youth, Bruce K. Bayley
Fear Of Crime And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement Among American Youth, Bruce K. Bayley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fear of crime and the public's satisfaction with police has been a focus of criminologists for a number of years. Most studies, however, have focused on the general population as a whole. What is not known is how fearful American youth are of the crime in their neighborhoods and how they perceive those in law enforcement. The purpose of this study was to explore this subgroup of the population and to begin the investigation of youths' fear of crime and their perceptions of law enforcement.
Using a national sample of 1,897 youth ages 16-25 collected from 12 cities throughout the …

Crossing The Line: Juvenile Transfer And Prison Violence, Jessica M. Huffman
Crossing The Line: Juvenile Transfer And Prison Violence, Jessica M. Huffman
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
The juvenile court has long held caring and rehabilitation as it's objective for those persons who commit crimes while under age 18. However, arguably, that goal has been compromised with the use of juvenile transfers. Some research has been done on the use of transfers, but little has studied the effects of incarcerating juveniles with adult prisoners at the state level. This thesis examines the use of the juvenile transfer and the effects it has with respect to prison violence using states in the U.S. as the unit of analysis. It was hypothesized that prison violence would increase with an …

Chipping Away At The Gendered Wall Implications For Being A Woman Sociologist, Rebecca Fogerty Grove
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate what factors may determine productivity among sociology professors and factors that-affect promotions and hiring. In today's academic institutions, the gender barrier is considered nonexistent; however, the actual existence of the gender barrier is often apparent in departmental hiring decisions and university tenure policies. With knowledge of current, often subtle, biased standards, the gender barrier can begin to be dismantled to offer true equality for all potential and current professors. The data was collected in 2001, during the fall academic semester from departments of sociology (n=2 l 8). This thesis looks at the …

Rape Myths Among A Sample Of Utc Students, Nicolette Mendenhall
Rape Myths Among A Sample Of Utc Students, Nicolette Mendenhall
Honors Theses
Rape has a tremendous impact upon victims. The victim has to come to terms with the reality that she was raped,as well as face the new perceptions that other people will have about her. These perceptions will be a result of conceptions about rape that are not realistic. These unrealistic beliefs are called 'rape myths.' There has been much research on rape myths for the following reasons: they may upset the victim, they provide justification for rapists to rape someone, and they may affect a woman's behavior because she may avoid activities she believes will lead her to be raped. …

Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts
Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts
The Qualitative Report
Adolescent girls with conduct problems were interviewed regarding their (a) understanding of positive and negative emotions, (b) parental context of experiencing emotions, (c) ways of regulating emotions, (d) success in emotion regulation, and (e) use of alternative strategies in dealing with emotions. It was found that the girls have relatively little understanding of their negative internal states and/or are unable to express them to others, especially to fathers. They have few successful strategies for regulating negative emotions in themselves and others and are unaware of alternative strategies. This dysregulatory pattern likely prevents them from learning more appropriate ways of expressing …
Night Moves: A Qualitative Investigation Of Street-Level Sex Work, Rochelle L. Dalla
Night Moves: A Qualitative Investigation Of Street-Level Sex Work, Rochelle L. Dalla
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The subculture of street-level sex work including the social environment, drug use and abuse, and violence was examined. Personal interviews were conducted with 43 women involved in streetwalking prostitution. Data were analyzed using Phenomenological Descriptive Analysis (Colaizzi, 1978). Several participants reported developing emotional relationships and having children with clients, former clients, or pimps; some participants were married to men who pimped them. Supportive relationships with other streetwalkers were largely nonexistent; streetwalking constitutes a solitary business for most. The majority reported drug addiction, although less than half entered prostitution to support an already established drug habit. Financial need propelled many into …

Symbolism And Ritual As Used By The National Socialists, Stephanie M. Holcomb
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Utilizing symbolism and ritual, the most important factors leading to the rise of National Socialism in Germany are examined. The thesis delineates the general history of Germany up to the rise of Hitler and reviews several major historical works on the Nazi’s rise. It also examines the theoretical literature on symbolism and ritual before analyzing the Nazi’s use of symbolism and ritual in their ascension to and maintenance of power.

[Beatrice Whiting:] Introduction To Special Issue Of Ethos, Thomas S. Weisner, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The Society for Psychological Anthropology cosponsored a symposium at the American Anthropological Association meetings in November 1999, honoring Beatrice Whiting and her work. At this symposium, 14 former students, colleagues and collaborators presented papers and discussion comments. The organizers (Thomas Weisner and Susan Abbott) sought to reflect Whiting's varied interests and projects, and worked to include different generations, students, collaborators (graduate and undergraduate), and projects. This special issue presents a set of seven papers from the symposium. Each contribution focuses on one or more of Whiting's career-long interests, including gender, women's work and education, social structure and child socialization, adolescence, …
