In July 1997, the Massachusetts State Legislature, recognizing the challenge presented by the problem of substance abuse for women in the criminal justice system, authorized funds to the Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Services for a study of substance using female offenders to be conducted by the John W. McCormack Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Since March 1998, a group of researchers at the McCormack Institute and the Criminal Justice Center at UMass Boston has gathered and analyzed a wealth of quantitative and qualitative information on women offenders in Massachusetts.

The Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) Program requires adaptations in the university environment. We must examine and reinterpret (1) the roles and responsibilities of faculty; (2) the design of the undergraduate curriculum; (3) the structures of the university that create the capacity and support to sustain different working relationships with the community; and (4) our definitions of success and quality.

The Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation (HPSISN) program challenges health professions educational institutions to integrate community service into curricula and to promote student understanding of the social responsibility and public purposes of their chosen profession. With support from The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Corporation for National Service, the HPSISN program began in 1995 in 20 demonstration sites, which were funded to integrate service learning into professional programs of study for entry into the health professions.
Organizational Structures For Community Engagement, Sharon Singleton, Deborah Hirsch, Cathy Burack
Organizational Structures For Community Engagement, Sharon Singleton, Deborah Hirsch, Cathy Burack
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
In a time of public scrutiny of higher education, there is good reason - both for the survival of the campus and the survival of the community around it -- for institutions to promote outreach. Yet even within those institutions with formal structures -- mission statements, faculty handbooks, and presidential leadership that support community service -- the practical considerations -- work assignments, evaluation mechanisms and institutional rewards -- present real challenges. Service-enclaves are structures that exist or are developed within institutions that allow faculty and staff to work collectively as they serve their communities. While individual service work is no …

Shared Consequences: Recent Experiences With Outreach And Community-Based Learning, Judith A. Ramaley
Higher Education
Recently, William M. Sullivan asked "whether [higher education] has the ability and the will to respond through leadership, institutional design, teaching, and research, in creating a new form of intellectual life for the public good" (Sullivan 1996). A call has been issued for our nation's research universities to embrace public engagement (Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities 1996), and to acknowledge that "higher education should be about values - the values of informed citizenship, the values expressed in a sense of responsibility ... "(Atwell 1996).

If we want our students to acquire the democratic virtues of honesty, tolerance. empathy. generosity. teamwork, and social responsibility, we have to demonstrate those qualities not only in our individual professional conduct but also in our institutional policies," writes Alexander Astin in "What Higher Education Can Do in the Cause of Citizenship"' (Chronicle of Higher Education, October 6, 1995).

Large-Scale Institutional Change To Implement An Urban University Mission: Portland State University, Judith A. Ramaley
Higher Education
In response to calls for accountability and effectiveness, public universities are reviewing their missions and are adopting measurable mission-specific goals. An emerging distinctive institutional type is the urban university, an institution characterized by the nature and extent of its responsiveness to the research and educational needs of complex metropolitan regions. This paper concerns the national environment for organizational change, a model for change, and a case study of one urban university that has pursued comprehensive and systemic change in its academic and administrative environment to direct resources to the support of its distinctive urban mission.

Higher Education
Higher education is being asked to pay more attention to student learning and to contribute to the enhancement of the social and economic conditions of the community it serves. As a result, educational institutions will no longer be self-contained Community members and organizations have become not only critical partners inframing the goals and intentions of the educational reform movement, but they also have assets that must be tapped by educational institutions that wish to implement change and respond to social needs
Training Leaders For Multiracial And Multi-Ethnic Collaboration, James Jennings
Training Leaders For Multiracial And Multi-Ethnic Collaboration, James Jennings
Trotter Review
Due to changes unfolding in urban demographics, along with continuing social and economic problems in many cities, there is a growing need for a cadre of community-based leaders to work in, and on behalf of, communities of color. Developing such leaders requires understanding of the factors that determine the nature of racial and ethnic relations between African-American, Latino, and Asian communities. Unfortunately, training programs in higher education designed to equip African-American, Latino, and Asian urban leaders to work with each other and become effective change agents in their communities have not been widely established, even at institutions with strong urban …

For many years the University of Nebraska at Omaha has been considered the urban campus in the University of Nebraska system. Part of its mission was to meet the educational, research and service needs of the Omaha metropolitan area. UNO was able to meet this urban mission as a commuter campus since most of the students were already living in Omaha.

"My conviction is that if we want to be honest and ask where is God and his church in this pluralistic society, then we have to say the city is the major frontier for the church's mission today."
With those words, Dr. James Berquist, the new director of the American Lutheran Church's Division for Mission and America, addressed the 12th annual convention of the ALC's Conference on lnner City Ministries. More than 50 delegates from 11 regions had gathered in Milwaukee in mid-June for the four-day convention.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This paper reviews some of the most salient aspects of E. M. Rogg's (1974) seminal work, The Assimilation of Cuban Exiles; The Role of Community and Class--a sociological study of the Cuban community in the town of West New York in northeastern New Jersey. Although taking issue with some of the author's theses, this paper elaborates on other findings of the book in question by means of more recent participant-observation field research in the same neighborhood. For example, the new data confirms Rogg's proposition that the organized ethnic minority helps to direct the process of acculturation, though slowly.

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)
The bibliographic information provided in this pamphlet is the first step in a potentially larger project being undertaken by the Department of Rural Sociology at South Dakota State University. The ultimate objective of the overall project would be to compile a detailed annotated bibliography of extension social science related materials available nation-wide. It is the feeling of the department that the communication network within and between Regions is not sufficient at this time to allow Extension personnel to be aware of the multitude of support materials available to them. Such awareness may allow us to make use of materials already …
