The Development Of A Grassroots Citizen Action Organization, Mary Runge
The Development Of A Grassroots Citizen Action Organization, Mary Runge
Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this study is to develop a model community organizing plan for persons wishing to establish a grassroots citizen action organization. Existential in nature, this model will be geared toward easy and practical application, i.e. a "cookbook" approach to the process of organizing a citizen action organization. A secondary purpose of this study is to provide students and beginning community organizers with a basic theoretical and historical orientation by which to understand the field of community organization.
Maintaining Goals In A Mutual-Benefit Association, James R. Hudson
Maintaining Goals In A Mutual-Benefit Association, James R. Hudson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Mutual benefit associations have been frequently found to confront two major problems: membership apathy and oligarchical control. The organization presented in this paper solved those two problems in unique ways. First professionals employed by the organization were kept in subordinant roles when key policy decisions were made by the lay board. Secondly, the organizational structure did not match the reward structure, i.e., salaries of supervisors were often lower than those of the professional staff. Finally, the organization operated on the principle that each of its programs should be taken over by other organizations and were successful frequently enough with this …
Blacks In The American Criminal Justice System: A Study Of Sanctioned Deviance, Terry Jones
Blacks In The American Criminal Justice System: A Study Of Sanctioned Deviance, Terry Jones
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Almost since the beginning of Black history in America there have been differences of opinion as to what the role of Blacks should be in reference to the criminal justice system. In the beginning these differences centered around the issue of cooperation or resistance to the slave system and a criminal justice system that guaranteed slavery durante vita. Now, while the issue is no longer slavery, Blacks continue the debate over cooperation versus resistance to the criminal justice system. What should the role of Blacks be in reference to the criminal justice system? Can Blacks be of greater assistance to …

Symbolic Interaction And Social Planning: Perspectives From The Early Years, Roger A. Lohmann
Symbolic Interaction And Social Planning: Perspectives From The Early Years, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The principal thesis of this paper is that the inadequacies of recent efforts at social planning are essential failures of theory, rather than failures of practice. Economic, land use and social welfare planners it is suggested have all shared a common unwillingness or inability to abandon commitments to an essentially utilitarian rhetoric of reasoned behavior, wherein means are matched with ends, persons are viewed as essentially self-interested and goal-directed rational problem solvers operating on schedules of goal attainment known or predictable by the planners. Symbolic interaction theory has resources to revitalize planning theory. Selected publications by John Dewey, G.H. Mead, …

The Vanishing Sociology-Social Work Alliance: A Study In The Politics Of Professionalism, David G. Bromley, Frank J. Weed
The Vanishing Sociology-Social Work Alliance: A Study In The Politics Of Professionalism, David G. Bromley, Frank J. Weed
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The undergraduate sociology-social work alliance in sociology departments has a long tradition in American colleges despite ideological differences between the two disciplines. Recently this old alliance shows signs of disintegration. This paper argues that the recent emphasis on professionalization of undergraduate social work through the use of accrediting standards coupled with the control of Federal social work training grants have placed new pressures on the old alliance. Evidence is presented which indicates that the conflict is being resolved in the direction of greater administrative specialization and autonomy for social work.

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "New Single-Family Houses Constructed in Douglas and Sarpy Counties During 1977," by Jack Ruff and Linda Ferring.
Home building has been called one of the brightest spots in the nation's economy in 1977, as construction increased 29 percent since 1976.1 Building permits issued in 1977 for residential units in Douglas and Sarpy counties indicate a 15 percent rise from 1976. The past year was the second year of increase in total permit units after the recessionary slump in construction activity early in the decade. Single-family housing permits have increased for three …

After 40 years of U.S. intervention and support of one of the most unjust and repressive dictatorship in Latin America, President Carter announced on Thursday, November 9, that he was suspending all economic aid to Nicaragua.
Terry Cannon, a New York journalist and I landed in Managua the following day. We had been sent by several organizations to investigate the situation since the bloody civil war, and arrived in the capital city in time to see President Anastasio Somoza's angry televised reply. He made it clear that he will neither resign nor hold a meaningful plebescite.

[Review Of] Barbara Bryant Solomon, Black Empowerment: Social Work In Oppressed Communities, Emma Turner Lucas
[Review Of] Barbara Bryant Solomon, Black Empowerment: Social Work In Oppressed Communities, Emma Turner Lucas
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
At long last an issue of great importance to the Black communit [community] in the social work arena has been addressed. The commencement of social service programs in the l960's brought about an even greate [greater] need for a deeper understanding of the effects of social ills on minorities, especially Blacks. While some individuals had good intentions of bringing about this understanding, they lacked the necessary familiarity with the Black community and its conditions. Black Empowerment addresses itself to this concern by describing the operational mobility of the Black community within a larger society.

[Review Of] Jane B. Katz (Ed.), I Am The Fire Of Time: The Voices Of Native American Women, Gretchen Bataille
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Speaking at the Annual Conference on Ethnic and Minority Studies in April, Bea Medicine admonished the audience that rather than lament the work which has not yet been done by or about Native American women, we must recognize the significance and breadth of what has already been written. I Am the Fire of Time shows just that. The selections come from nineteenth century transcripts as well as from contemporary women poets and activists. Over and over the reader is reminded that the Native American woman was not and is not the drudge or burden bearer portrayed in American fiction and …
Social Control In Applied Social Science: A Study Of Evaluative Researchers' Conformity To Technical Norms, Ilene Nagel Bernstein
Social Control In Applied Social Science: A Study Of Evaluative Researchers' Conformity To Technical Norms, Ilene Nagel Bernstein
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This paper is a preliminary exploration of the relationship between social factors, and conformity to a set of prescribed methodological norms in applied social science. Focusing our attention on evaluative research, we seek to estimate how variation in type and nature of research sponsorship, research context, and researcher relationship with sponsor and host affect reported conformity to methodological prescriptions. Analyzing the self-reported responses of 152 evaluative researchers to a mail questionnaire, we find: (a) that conformity to methodological prescriptions is very variable among evaluative researchers: (b) that the social factors here examined seem to affect systematically the degree of conformity; …

Occupational Socialization In Two Service Organizations, Doniel E. Weil
Occupational Socialization In Two Service Organizations, Doniel E. Weil
Honors Papers
This paper is an exploration of some of the processes involved in the creation and maintenance of a shared occupational identity among individuals in organizations. Though focusing specifically on police officers and high school teachers, through this I hope to raise some broader issues concerning the traditional view of "occupational socialization" and "occupations in organizations" in the sociological literature.
George Herbert Mead And Social Reform: His Work And Writings, Mary Jo Deegan, John S. Burger
George Herbert Mead And Social Reform: His Work And Writings, Mary Jo Deegan, John S. Burger
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
There are two popular myths concerning the eminent philosopher and social psychologist George Herbert Mead: that he published little during his lifetime and that Mind, Self, and Society is his most important sociological work. This misrepresentation of Mead's contributions is partially grounded in the neglect of his work and writings on social reform. The misrepresentation of the significance of the almost seventy articles Mead wrote during his lifetime distorts the meaning of his concepts and has profound implications for symbolic interactionists who claim Mead as one of their founding fathers.
The Resilience Of The Child As A Factor In Successful Adjustment To Permanent Placement, Lani Maureen Mcdonald
The Resilience Of The Child As A Factor In Successful Adjustment To Permanent Placement, Lani Maureen Mcdonald
Dissertations and Theses
This study explores the hypothesis that constitutional factors were significant in mediating their successful adjustment. The adjustment of children who in the past would have been viewed as permanently scarred and unable to adjust has provided researchers with an idiosyncratic situation that has also been found in other studies: children have adjusted despite odds against it and children considered to have incurred minimal trauma have had difficulty adjusting.
