Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott Jan 1984

Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Psychological services, as a part of the health-care system, have been "embedded in specific configurations of cultural meanings and social relationships,"[1] and the role of patients and healers cannot be understood apart from that context. This article explores the failure of psychology to effectively address the inhibiting impact of racism on human development, and it suggests a corrective agenda for the training of socially responsive and responsible psychologists, an agenda derived from the literacy education model of Paulo Freire.

[Review Of] Jay C. Chunn, Ii, Patricia J. Dunston, And Fariyal Ross-Sheriff, Eds. Mental Health And People Of Color: Curriculum Development And Change, Linda M. C. Abbott

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

American colleges, universities, and medical schools have developed elaborate structures for the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illness and associated problems in living. The history of psychological training is not value free, but rather is imbedded in the general history of the culture, and reflective of its problematic issues. Whatever theoretical perspective mental health practitioners are trained in, whatever internship experiences are designed to complement the instructional program, the rates of success in identifying and resolving difficulties vary with the ethnicity of their clients. Success is shown disproportionately for a limited population-the clients of European American background. In …

[Review Of] Ken Goodwin. Understanding African Poetry: A Study Of Ten Poets, Alice A. Deck Jan 1984

[Review Of] Ken Goodwin. Understanding African Poetry: A Study Of Ten Poets, Alice A. Deck

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Understanding African Poetry is a valuable asset to anyone interested in African anglophone poetry. Goodwin offers textual analysis, evaluation, and supplementary contextual information on each of the ten poets he chose to discuss. Much of the analysis shows a keen insight and the contextual commentary is quite informative. However, Goodwin's evaluation reflects his bias towards British and white American concepts of what constitutes "good" poetry.

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin Jan 1984

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin

The Bridge

In a world in flux, the historian must strike a balance between change and tradition. The historian of American immigration and culture particularly sits poised on the knife's edge, seeking universal categories of analysis and understanding while immersing himself in a loving study of distinct peoples, places, and ways of life in disarray. He is the boomer engineer committed to democracy and equality, progress and growth, mobility and technology, science and medicine, individualism and freedom. But he is also the artist, priest, and guardian of culture, the admirer of fragile arts and crafts and tastes perfected over generations, of customs, …

Overcoming Barriers To Clinical Sociology, Alfred Mcclung Lee Jan 1984

Overcoming Barriers To Clinical Sociology, Alfred Mcclung Lee

Clinical Sociology Review

The search for bridges between theory and practice is related to such terms as sociatrist, institutional psychiatrist, societal technician, and clinical sociologist. The need to inject clinical sociological findings into the work of the public relations counselor, personnel director, management specialist, labor relations consultant, political manager, opinion analyst, and social worker is outlined. Special attention is given to (1) societal and especially middle-class professional cultural obstacles to the development of realistic clinical sociological research, theory, and practice; (2) disciplinary barriers against the clinical approach built into much sociology; and (3) historical trends that now appear to be favoring the formal …

Clinical Sociology And Adolescent Medicine: The Design Of A Program, David J. Kallen Jan 1984

Clinical Sociology And Adolescent Medicine: The Design Of A Program, David J. Kallen

Clinical Sociology Review

This article describes the uses of sociological theory and knowledge in the design and operation of an in-hospital program for the care of physically ill and injured adolescents. The central tasks of adolescence — resolution of the conflict between autonomy and dependency, the development of intimacy and competence, the ability to take on adult roles, and the development of the self — may be hampered by a total institution which depersonalizes patients and fosters dependency. The development of normative structures which encourage autonomy, continuity of role evelopment, appropriate levels of intimacy, and continued development of the self are encouraged by …

Social Action Organization Participation And Personal Change In The Poor: Part Ii, Robert D. Herman Sep 1983

Social Action Organization Participation And Personal Change In The Poor: Part Ii, Robert D. Herman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In Part I (Herman, 1982) evidence bearing on the hypothesis that participation by the poor in social action organizations results in personal change was reviewed and found to be inconsistent and open to diverse Interpretations. In Part I It was observed that not all socizi action organizations are al ike and, thus, that participation is also of varied kinds and extents and may have different consequences for personal change. The Wife Of The Alcoholic; Sexist Stereotypes In The Alcoholism Literature, James T. Decker, John Redhourse, Roberta D. Green, Richard Starrett Sep 1983

The Wife Of The Alcoholic; Sexist Stereotypes In The Alcoholism Literature, James T. Decker, John Redhourse, Roberta D. Green, Richard Starrett

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Current alcoholism literature, alcoholism education, and alcoholism treatment suggests that the wife of the alcoholic is every bit as sick (physically, mentally, and spiritually) as her practicing alcoholic husband. How did we come to this view of the wife of the alcoholic?

This paper will review 1) how the wife of the alcoholic has been regarded over the years; 2) how these portraits of the wife of the alcoholic that appeared in the scholarly literature have influenced current thinking and treatment, and 3) how this body of literature and the popular concepts of the wife of the alcoholic that evolved …

Notes On A Forgotten Black Social Worker And Sociologist: George Edmund Haynes, Iris Carlton-La Ney Sep 1983

Notes On A Forgotten Black Social Worker And Sociologist: George Edmund Haynes, Iris Carlton-La Ney

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper highlights the career of Dr. George Edmund Haynes, a pioneer sociologist and social worker. It places Haynes in a historical context examining his professional contributions during the early 1900s. Haynes' professional activities reflected the Progressive Era's emphasis on scientific research and social justice. Although he received some recognition as a sociologist and social worker, his contributions were relegated generally to the periphery of both the discipline of sociology and the field of social work.

Black Appalachian Families, Arthur J. Cox May 1983

Black Appalachian Families, Arthur J. Cox

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The black family in America has been subjected to social change more than the family of any other racial or ethnic group. An overview of its adjustment through successive crises of African transplantation, slavery, sudden emancipation, migration to cities and the vicissitudes of second-class citizenship help in understanding the black family's contemporary forms. The black family of Appalachia faces yet another problem - (INVISIBILITY)

Social Work Pac's And State Social Work Associations Purpose, History, And Action Strategies, Gary Mathews May 1983

Social Work Pac's And State Social Work Associations Purpose, History, And Action Strategies, Gary Mathews

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social work as a profession has only recently become politically active. One consequence of this interest in the political process has been the proliferation of political action committees as creatures of the National Association of Social Workers and its state chapters. Social work PAC's are a key ingredient necessary to enable the profession to influence public policy. Perhaps because political action committees are new to NASW, or perhaps because NASW is new to politics, very little has been written about the history, purpose or strategic implications of these committees.

This paper will trace the development and operation of PAC's and …
