Beyond An Underclass: An Essay On Up-Front Politics, Paula L. Dressel, Jeff Porterfield Mar 1993

Beyond An Underclass: An Essay On Up-Front Politics, Paula L. Dressel, Jeff Porterfield

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Debate about underclass conceptualization has once again forced sociologists to acknowledge the political context and implications of our work. This article extends the critical examination of underclass conceptualization to relatively undeveloped but politically important areas of concern. Initially we discuss the political economic context of conceptual controversies surrounding poverty. With a preference for structural analysis, we call for the return of class to economically marginalized people and suggest how that goal might be enhanced by a focus on relations of distribution as well as production. Valuing subjects' vantage points, we recommend how sociologists' work can return agency and diversity to …

Theory And The Generation And Subversion Of Knowledge, Dennis Saleebey Mar 1993

Theory And The Generation And Subversion Of Knowledge, Dennis Saleebey

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This essay is an argument for the refurbishing of theoretical thinking in social work. In particular, the author calls for the infusion of generative as opposed to normative theory in the profession. Only generative theory has been proven to invigorate the thinking and doing of professional social workers.

The Sociology Of Plants, Julie L. Welch Stuehser

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The purpose of this research is to assess the link between plants, people, and performance. Several studies have suggested that plants in a social environment will change the behavior of the people in their vicinity (Relf, 1990, 1992; Bryant, 1992).

Review Essay: "Arthur M. Schlesinger's Vision Of America And The Multicultural Debate" By Jesse M. Vazquez, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In April of 1990, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., published an essay in the Wall Street Journal entitled "When Ethnic Studies are Un-American."[1] The publication of that article followed, by about eight months, the release of New York State's Department of Education's now controversial report -- "A Curriculum of Inclusion."[2] Interestingly, the publication of The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society also follows, by about seven months, the release of New York State's second and most current Education Department report calling for the development of a new multicultural social studies curriculum -- One Nation, Many Peoples: A Declaration of …

Teaming Up At Ucla: A Report To The Campus Outreach Opportunity League, Robert D. Shumer, Parvin Kassaie Jan 1993

Teaming Up At Ucla: A Report To The Campus Outreach Opportunity League, Robert D. Shumer, Parvin Kassaie

Higher Education

Do community service. This has been the charge of reports on post-secondary education for the past several years. From the Carnegie report (College: The Undergraduate Experience in Higher Education, 1987) to the passage of "human corps" legislation in California, efforts have been undertaken to expand the number of college students involved in service. Yet students have always done service. Boy Scouts, Key Clubs, Red Cross, fraternities and sororities, undergraduate student projects for the homeless, hungry, and illiterate have .been outlets for service for years. While so many service programs already exist, the real issue is: how do we get a …

Age And Ethnic Variations In Attitudes Towards Older Persons, Family And Filial Obligations, Suzanne T. Ortega, John Shafer Jan 1993

Age And Ethnic Variations In Attitudes Towards Older Persons, Family And Filial Obligations, Suzanne T. Ortega, John Shafer

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Two major interpretations have been advanced to explain the frequent finding that ethnic elders have more extensive kin support networks than Anglo elders. Structural interpretations argue that the exigencies of poverty and ill health cause minorities to rely more heavily on family members for help than Anglos, whereas cultural explanations rest upon presumed differences in family values and attitudes. Despite the prominence of these two explanations, direct tests of the cultural model are rare. In this study, we use data from a study of 100 African, Mexican, Vietnamese, European, and Native American adults to test the hypothesis that there are …

Evaluation Of An Intergenerational Service-Learning Project For Undergraduates, Robert G. Bringle, John F. Kremer Jan 1993

Evaluation Of An Intergenerational Service-Learning Project For Undergraduates, Robert G. Bringle, John F. Kremer

Intergenerational

An appropriate objective within a liberal arts approach to education is enhancing students' awareness of attitudes toward their own aging. A combined intervention of intergenerational experience and didactic instruction had a favorable effect on students' attitudes toward older adults i11 general and on students' uie'w of their own later lives. Additional positive consequences are discussed, and suggestions for running similar curricular components are presented.

Wasteland Development And The Empowerment Of Women: The Sarthi Experience, Madhu Sarin Jan 1993

Wasteland Development And The Empowerment Of Women: The Sarthi Experience, Madhu Sarin

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS describes an innovative approach to rehabilitation of wastelands developed by Social Action for Rural and Tribal Inhabitants of India (SARTHI), a nongovernmental organization based in the Panchmahals District of Gujarat State in Western India. By assisting rural women to organize themselves around the rehabilitation of patches of degraded common land, SARTHI has been able to help them not only meet their needs for biomass in a more efficient and ecologically sound manner, but also to empower them to start asserting themselves in dealing with a broader range of problems. As primary gatherers and users of biomass, …

The Contexts Of Housework And The Paid Labor Force: Women’S Perceptions Of The Demand Levels Of Their Work, Sheryl J. Grana, Helen A. Moore, Janet K. Wilson, Michelle Miller Jan 1993

The Contexts Of Housework And The Paid Labor Force: Women’S Perceptions Of The Demand Levels Of Their Work, Sheryl J. Grana, Helen A. Moore, Janet K. Wilson, Michelle Miller

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This research explores the work perceptions, both physical and mental, of women. The research finds that women’s perceptions of waged and nonwaged labor differ greatly depending on the work environment. Perceptions of physical demands of waged labor are almost solely dependent on the type of paid labor women engage in. For homeworkers, perceptions of physical labor are influenced primarily by the number of hours invested in housework. The mental demands of waged and nonwaged labor are also perceived differently. Women in the waged economy report significantly higher mental demands than do homeworkers. This too varies across labor segments. The closest …

Gender And Self-Care In Undergraduate University Students: A Qualitative Study, Anne Johnston Munroe Jan 1993

Gender And Self-Care In Undergraduate University Students: A Qualitative Study, Anne Johnston Munroe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Although there has been more interest in home health care, self-care, or "lay" initiatives in health care in recent years, most research is from the perspective of the researcher. The researcher names and defines the important issues and also generally makes use of structured questionnaires that force responses into predetermined categories. My research project was a departure from this approach. Grounded in the interpretive paradigm, this research sought to better understand the ways in which men and women experience their physical and mental health and the methods they employ to augment or maintain their health. Another purpose of the research …

The Tranfer Of Work Experiences Into Family Life: An Introductory Study Of Workers In Self-Managed Work Teams, Leslie Stanley-Stevens, Dale E. Yeatts, Mary Thibodeaux Jan 1993

The Tranfer Of Work Experiences Into Family Life: An Introductory Study Of Workers In Self-Managed Work Teams, Leslie Stanley-Stevens, Dale E. Yeatts, Mary Thibodeaux

Clinical Sociology Review

By using survey data from a study currently taking place at a Boeing facility, this research explores the effects that work skills have on people's family lives. The responses were overwhelmingly positive. Past studies emphasizing the importance of a supportive supervisor and positive relationships with family were supported as was the concept of "isomorphism" or similarity of behavior patterning at work and at home. Past studies regarding gender differences were not supported.

An Empirical Application Of Interprofessional Consensus, Stephanie Amedo Marquez, John Gartrell Jan 1993

An Empirical Application Of Interprofessional Consensus, Stephanie Amedo Marquez, John Gartrell

Clinical Sociology Review

Determining the veracity of increasing incidents of child abuse presents a problem to clinical sociologists as well as other agency professionals, and subsequently to studies which rely on these determinations for sample selection. This paper tests the theory of interprofessional consensus underlying child abuse reports in records from a hospital population. The average agreement (interpersonal consensus) of ten different professional reports is high, estimated by correlation analysis. Factor analysis reveals two separate dimensions underlying professional reports; one factor separates the social agency determinations from the legal agencies. Despite the clustering of agencies into separate dimensions, determinants of substantiation do not …

Government Sponsored Health Care: A Cluster Profile Of Supporters And Nonsupporters, Bonnie L. Lewis, F. Dale Parent Jan 1993

Government Sponsored Health Care: A Cluster Profile Of Supporters And Nonsupporters, Bonnie L. Lewis, F. Dale Parent

Clinical Sociology Review

While there has been a great deal of information revealing the public's dissatisfaction with our current health care system, there is little detailed analysis of these attitudes, and of the individuals who are most likely to support or reject such a system. This becomes more and more important as health policy debates shift toward a questioning of the viability of the current health care system and possible alterations to that system. In this paper we use cluster analytic methods on data collected from a public opinion survey of Louisiana residents to develop profiles of those people who support and who …

Dramaturgical Analysis Of Military Death Notification, Russell J. Buenteo, C. Allen Haney Jan 1993

Dramaturgical Analysis Of Military Death Notification, Russell J. Buenteo, C. Allen Haney

Clinical Sociology Review

The process of military death notification is designed to explain the interactions between next-of-kin notifiers (NOKN) and the people that are being notified. This paper focuses upon a dramaturgical analysis of the notification process. Specifically, the use of props and the performances of the actors within this setting will be discussed in hopes of explaining the organizational constraints placed upon the notifiers, and to explain the patterned expectations and anticipations of the notifiers.

The Measurement Of Effective Parenting In Native Communities, Adje Van De Sande Jan 1993

The Measurement Of Effective Parenting In Native Communities, Adje Van De Sande

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In Native communities across North America, there are initiatives currently being taken by Native people to develop culturally relevant child welfare programs to deal with the problems of child maltreatment. One example of such a program is Cherish the Children, a training program developed by the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Centre to teach “parenting skills to Indian mothers with young children” (Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, 1988). It was developed by Anishnabe (Ojibway) people and encourages Anishnabe parents to return to “the old ways” of parenting. The purpose of this study was to develop a culturally-sensitive instrument that would measure …
