The Influence Of Religion On The Chicago School Of Sociology, Luigi Tomasi
The Influence Of Religion On The Chicago School Of Sociology, Luigi Tomasi
Clinical Sociology Review
This paper concerns the influence of religion on the Chicago School of Sociology. After showing the marginal importance that religion had in early sociological American studies, this article takes issue with those interpretations that do not acknowledge that the Chicago School remained interested in the topic of religion even after it had freed itself of theological influence in order to concentrate more on solving the problems in America at that time. It is the author's opinion that the Chicago School promoted religious research not only during the time of Albion W. Small and Charles R. Henderson when theological interest was …

Books
Genocide is a modern term whereby groups of people are killed on the basis of their religion, race, ethnicity, or nationality. This book suggest that modernity and the tremendous social differentiation that is a part of our modern world may, in part, be to blame. The authors examine textbook 20th century horrors: from the massacre of the Armenians, to the planned famine in the Ukraine, to the Holocaust, and links of modern warfare to genocide. By studying cases of genocide, the authors hope to inform and connect to all other efforts to understand and to prevent the mass destruction …

[Review Of] Raymond 1. Demallie And Douglas R. Parks. Eds. Sioux Indian Religion: Tradition And Innovation, David M. Gradwohl
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Most of the papers included in this anthology were presented in Bismarck in 1982 at a conference entitled "American Indian Religion in the Dakotas: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives." The conference was funded by the North Dakota Humanities Council and brought together a wide array of academicians and lay people representing different and sometimes conflicting experiential and philosophical points of view.
[Review Of] Julie Cruikshank. In Collaboration With Angela Sidney. Kitty Smith. And Annie Ned. Life Lived Like A Story: Life Stories Of Three Yukon Native Elders, Laurie Lisa
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Life Lived Like a Story, a volume in the American Indian Lives Series, contains the transcribed autobiographies of three women of the Yukon: Angela Sidney, Kitty Smith, and Annie Ned. In her introduction, Cruikshank states that the book is "based on the premise that life-history investigation provides a model for research." To meet this goal, Cruikshank's methodology depended upon ongoing collaborations between interviewer and interviewees. The three remarkable women who share their life stories in this volume were all raised on the inland side of the high country frontier separating coastal Tlingit and interior Athapaskans; all can claim both Athapaskan …

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Harriet Martineau authored the first systematic methodological treatise in sociology, conducted extended international comparative studies of social institutions, and translated Auguste Comte's Cours de philosophie positive into English, thus structurally facilitating the introduction of sociology and positivism into the United States. In her youth she was a professional writer who captured the popular English mind by wrapping social scientific instruction in a series of widely read short novels. In her maturity she was an astute sociological theorist, methodologist, and analyst of the first order. To the extent that any complex institutional phenomenon such as sociology can have identifiable founders, Alice …

Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
The social sciences of religion could be transformed by taking seriously the fact that humans are embodied. A new conceptualization of a mindful body has the potential to lead to profound shifts in how we view our subjects and their worlds. Our research strategies need to take into account that believers (and nonbelievers) are not merely disembodied spirits, but that they experience a material world in and through their bodies. Greater awareness of the social and political uses of human bodies should guide our research and theory.

Critique [Of Jewish Studies: Are They Ethnic? By Howard Adelman], Victoria Aarons
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Adelman's historical account of the rise and development of Jewish studies in European and American universities has implications not only for the current debate regarding the appropriateness and place of Jewish studies programs in the academy but also for the place of ethnic studies in university curricula in general. I believe the most compelling argument against ethnic studies programs in higher education charges them with institutionalizing specific ideologies and thus undermining the self-critical investigation of divergent positions within a traditional discipline. But this charge raises an equally troublesome presupposition : that courses of study can and should be compartmentalized into …

Saudi Arabia’S And Egypt’S Public And School Libraries, Donna Marie Hoeksema
Saudi Arabia’S And Egypt’S Public And School Libraries, Donna Marie Hoeksema
Graduate Research Papers
This research was based on a concern for libraries in third world countries. A study of literature about public and school libraries in two developing countries in the Middle East was conducted. Based on the evidence that certain conditions were present in the United States and Europe before library development began, this researcher isolated eight of these conditions to research whether they were in existence or growing in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Two hypotheses were-tested. First, political stability was evident. Secondly, evidence of growth in the following seven conditions were studied: education, economic growth, government commitment towards libraries, urbanization, presence …

Hoary-Headed Saints: The Aged In Nineteenth-Century Mormon Culture, Brian D. Reeves
Theses and Dissertations
This study paints a picture of prevalent attitudes toward the Mormon elderly in the nineteenth century. It identifies some characteristics of the aged population, and discusses feelings expressed by individual older persons about different aspects of their lives. It is a first step in gaining a greater understanding of how they fit into the larger pictures of old age and the Mormon Church in nineteenth century America.

[Review Of] Margaret B. Blackman. During My Time: Florence Edenshaw Davidson, A Haida Woman, Gretchen M. Bataille
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This book is a recorded autobiography, but it is also much more. In the preface Blackman traces her connections with the Haida people of the Northwest Coast since 1970 and explains her special relationship with Florence Edenshaw Davidson whom she promised in 1973 that she would someday publish the record of her life. Davidson had accepted Margaret Blackman as a grandchild and the special kinship relationship enabled the two of them in 1977 to record the life story of the eighty-one year old Haida woman. Nani, the Haida equivalent for "grandmother," traces through six chapters the significant events of her …

The Nationalization Of Arabic And Islamic Education In Egypt: Dar Al Alum And Al Azhar, Lois A. Aroian
Faculty Books
This study sets forth for the first time the vital role of Dar Al'ulum, Egypt's first and only continuously operating university level teaching training institution, in the nationalization of Islamic and Arabic education in Egypt. Ali Mubarak, nineteenth century Egypt's longest enduring bureaucrat, initiated , and Khedive Ismail (1863-1879) founded Dar al Ulum in 1892 to train teachers of Arabic and Turkish for the newly expanding national (amiriyya) school system. This study grew out of a PhD dissertation, "Education, Language and Culture in Modern Egypt: Dar Al Ulum and its Graduates (1872-1923)" presented at The University of Michigin in 1978.

The Vanguard
A national assembly to address women's concern and an inter-Lutheran commission on women will have to wait-or perhaps remain just a fond dream.
hat's because of action taken at the regular fall meeting of the church body presidents and top executives who govern the Lutheran Council in USA. The meeting indicated that a proposal from the standing committee of the Council's Division for Mission and ministry (DMM) represented "new work" that could not be pursued unless requested by the four church bodies in the Council.
