The Doctor-Patient Relationship Revisited. An Analysis Of The Placebo Effect., Herbert M. Adler, Md, Van B. Hammett. Md

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

An overview of prescientific medicine, evolution, and individual human development is presented in an attempt to discover the generic factors operating in all interpersonal therapies. We hypothesize that the placebo effect rests on the universal human need for a group and, by symbolic extension, a system.

Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton Feb 1973

Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Andrew Billingsley in Black Families in White America has criticized much of the previous research on the black family, saying that social scientists have ignored the structural variation among families and have focused on a very limited number of family functions. To correct what he believes to be a distorted picture of the black family, he has suggested a typology of family structures and a large number of family functions which should be taken into consideration. This paper, based upon data collected from 321 black households, uses Billingsley’s typology to examine the association between family structures and functions. It is …

Integrity House: The Addict As A Total Institution, Kenneth D. Colburn Jan 1973

Integrity House: The Addict As A Total Institution, Kenneth D. Colburn

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Integrity House approach to rehabilitation is an apolitical, myth-oriented method reinforcing the pseudo psychological notion that addiction is exclusively the problem of the addict. Blame is placed solely on the addict; neither social ills nor any other factors share the responsibility for drug abuse.

Selected Social Stratification Factors And The Self Concept As Contingencies In College Persistence And Persistence In College Program Choice, Arnold J. Menning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study developed from a continuing interest by the writer in the various factors associated with student college persistence and stability of program choice. Institutions of higher learning are becoming increasingly concerned in these times of declining enrollments about the need for greater congruence between institutional planning and the services provided to the potential and enrolled student body. Relationships between selected (1) socioeconomic, academic, and self concept variables and (2) college persistence and stability of program choice were investigated in this study. The research was centered around the view of the self as a phenomenal self. Reference group theory …

The Significance Of Treater Competence In Either Behavior Modification Or Transactional Analysis Treatment Of Juvenile Offenders, Paul Mccormick

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Results of the Youth Center Research Project were almost equally favorable for each other's two schools. The parole-violation rates of the wards released from both institutions dropped from 43% to 31%, a considerable improvement when compared with the two control California Youth Authority schools continuing failure rate of 46%. These figures were for twelve-month parole-exposure periods. But the study’s major hypotheses were not verified. The more mature youths did not do better with TA than with B Mod, and the lower-maturity wards did no better with B Mod. In fact, one classification of higher-maturity wards did a little better with …

The purpose of the study was to determine which, out of four, child abuse causality theories select professionals in the state subscribe to. These theories are Role Reversal, Lack of Mothering, Successive Generation, and Psychological Dysfunctioning. Each theory is defined in such a manner as to highlight particular, selective characteristics expressed by the author. A second purpose was to establish a foundation for further study. The information gathered and the results obtained are for this end, also. The four causality theories of child abuse were postulated for explanatory purposes.
