Philosophy, Sociology And The Theory Of Social Welfare: A Conceptual Starting Point, Robert D. Herman
Philosophy, Sociology And The Theory Of Social Welfare: A Conceptual Starting Point, Robert D. Herman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In this paper I want to explore and 2begin to elucidate a fundamental problem in social welfare theory. The problem centers on the conception of the relation between individuals and social structure. Before proceeding with this task, it is important to note the senses in which the term "social welfare" will be used. The term has two basic senses, deriving from two more or less distinct intellectual traditions. In one sense the term refers to the provision of goods and services to needy individuals, either through government "transfers" or private philanthropy. In this comparatively narrow sense social welfare is a …

Evaluation Research: Some Possible Contexts Of Theory Failure, Pranab Chatterjee, Lenore Olsen, Thomas P. Holland
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
What can evaluation research tell us about social science theory? It is the purpose of this paper to examine that question. There has been much written in the current literature about the relationship between theory and practice. Because it is evaluation research (Breedlove, 1972: 71-89; Newbrough, 1966: 39-52; Suchman, 1971: 43-48; Suchman, 1967; Weiss, 1973: 37-45; Fitz- Gibbons and Morris, 1975: 1-4) that attempts to analyze the results of practice, it is the authors' belief that an examination of evaluation research studies for possible contexts of theory failure will contribute to a linkage between theory and practice.
An Analysis Of Political Violence With Ramifications For Options Of Response, James Lubben
An Analysis Of Political Violence With Ramifications For Options Of Response, James Lubben
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The latter years of the Sixties brought a wave of political violence to this country that paled the face of America in startled fear and utter disbelief. Unrest on college campuses, racial conflict spiraling crime rates, and civil disobedience related to the Viet Nam War caused many Americans to identify this period as one of the most violent in U.S. History. Such a sense of public paranoia swept the country that on July 29, 1967 President Johnson issued Executive Order 11365 establishing a National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. The nation remained tense and June 1968 saw the creation of …

Aoa: A Personal Approach To Environmental Education, Michael J. Naylon
Aoa: A Personal Approach To Environmental Education, Michael J. Naylon
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
MESFI (Minnesota Environmental Sciences Foundation, Inc.) is field testing materials for a community-based environmental course of study. Program emphasis includes clarification of values and examination of logistics necessary to the maintenance of communities in order that they might meet social needs. The approach is individualized, providing a means of studying the impact of one's lifestyle on the environment. Emphasis is placed on development of case studies, small group discussion, and cooperative problem-solving. Use of graphics as a form of summary is stressed. The Area of Affect (AOA) is a method of mapping participant activity, range or environmental impact within the …
An Analysis Of Cynicism Within Law Enforcement, Ervin G. Bublitz
An Analysis Of Cynicism Within Law Enforcement, Ervin G. Bublitz
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
An investigation and analysis of the concept of cynicism as part of a social process involving other sociological variables within two law enforcement agencies was undertaken. The major theoretical contention of this study was that within the law enforcement setting one consequence of employing certain organizational control mechanisms has been an accompanying generation of social strain relative to such control mechanisms. The Niederhoffer scale was employed as an objective measure of cynicism. Extended interviews were conducted with those who scored high on the cynicism scale. Two major sources of social strain were indicated by the interview responses: (a) the area …

The Effect Of Failure On Self-Concept, Merle Sprinzen
The Effect Of Failure On Self-Concept, Merle Sprinzen
Honors Papers
This paper explores the effects of failure on an individual's self-concept. A model based on symbolic interaction and attribution theories, among others, is elaborated to predict how an individual's self-concept will be affected by failure situations. It is argued that where the individual chooses to attribute causality for failure in the situation will determine the effects of that failure on his self-concept, unless the individual's belief system modifies the attribution process. This attribution is related to one major individual difference: a person's generalized expectancy for control. It is hypothesized that an individual's predisposition to conceive of causality as deriving from …

The Adult As A Consumer Of Learning, Malcolm Knowles
The Adult As A Consumer Of Learning, Malcolm Knowles
Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings
What I would like to do is explore with you what I think we know (and I will try to separate what we know from what we speculate about, as far as I can) about the behavior in the marketplace of adults as learners. Those of you who are in health education will find relevance in terms of patient teaching, of public health education, and even in pre-service and in-service education of health educators. Those of you who are not in health education can make applications to your respective fields of work.
Let me start by developing a little historical …

Whose Behavior In What Health Marketplace?, Leon S. Robertson
Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings
A number of behavioral scientists and health educators have been engaged for some time in attempts to explain and/or influence human behavior regarding health and illness. Behavior directed toward preserving health is called health behavior.1 Behavior subsequent to the perception of symptoms and directed toward diagnosis and treatment is called illness behavior.
It has been suggested that techniques used to market products and services can be used to help individuals fulfill their needs in both prevention and amelioration of illness as well as in the alleviation of other social problems. In this paper I shall review some principles that have …

Some Determinants Of Post-Purchase Satisfaction Among Medical Care Consumers, Lawrence Wortzel
Some Determinants Of Post-Purchase Satisfaction Among Medical Care Consumers, Lawrence Wortzel
Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings
Consumer behavior in the health marketplace is an interesting subject. One of the interesting things about studying medical care is that different people experience different results after having the same health care. For example, in the Massachusetts presidential primary that took place some time ago, one of the voting machines somehow got hooked up to an X-ray device, and, as a result, three voters were exposed to doses of radiation. One of the exposed was a conservative, one was a liberal, and one was an independent. They were immediately rushed to one of the major Boston medical centers where a …
Consumer Behavior: An Epidemiological Perspective, Thomas J. Prendergast
Consumer Behavior: An Epidemiological Perspective, Thomas J. Prendergast
Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings
My interest is epidemiology and preventive medicine. Epidemiology is the study of disease distributions in man. Preventive medicine is the attempt to avoid acquiring the risk factors of diseases by individuals, which can be called "primary prevention." Also it is the attempt to avoid development of diseases among those who have risk factors, and that is known as secondary prevention. Quite clearly there is much concern about epidemiology as the basis for preventive medicine and about preventive medicine as a potentially cheaper and easier way to provide quality medicine. Health education is a clear dimension of preventive medicine.

Sociological Factors In High Blood Pressure, Sidney M. Stahl
Sociological Factors In High Blood Pressure, Sidney M. Stahl
Consumer Behavior in the Health Marketplace: Symposium Proceedings
High blood pressure is a silent killer and is therefore one of the most significant of the medically related problems that afflicts modern man. Approximately 25 million people living in the United States have the disease. In reality, it is not a "disease" in the classic meaning of that term; instead its sequelae, or subsequent effects, are diseases that are all too familiar and deadly: stroke, kidney disease and myocardial infarction (heart attack), to name just a few. In fact, there are more deaths in the United States each year attributable to the sequelae of high blood pressure than to …
Factors Associated With The Acceptance By Nursing Students Of Role Functions As Characteristic Of An Expanded Role For Nurses, Sharon Leech Hofland
Factors Associated With The Acceptance By Nursing Students Of Role Functions As Characteristic Of An Expanded Role For Nurses, Sharon Leech Hofland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study of graduating nursing students was conducted to determine: (1) the extent to which these students would be willing to accept specified role functions as characteristic of an expanded role for nurses; and (2) what factors are associated with and seem to explain the graduating nursing students' acceptance of these specified role functions as characteristic of an expanded role for nurses. An interview schedule was developed, pretested, and administered to students enrolled in their final year of study at one of the nine schools with state board approved programs for Registered Nurse licensure. The interview schedule included questions relating …
A Comparison Of Low And Middle Socio-Economic Status Blacks On Two Measures Of Intelligence, Anthony Young
A Comparison Of Low And Middle Socio-Economic Status Blacks On Two Measures Of Intelligence, Anthony Young
Masters Theses
The testing of persons with highly dissimilar cultural backrounds has received increasing attention since mid-century. In America, the practical problems of cross-cultural testing has been chiefly associated with subcultures or minority cultures within the dominate culture. Havinghurst (1951), in citing cultural differences which may affect intelligence performance named social class among the major types of culture in the U.S. A review of the literature revealed that research is close to unanimous in showing that there are significant differences in intelligence performance of children and youth from different socio-economic backrounds. These findings revealed that children of higher socio-economic status (SES) levels …
Androgyny And Its Relationship To Time Competence And Inner-Directedness In A College Sample, Margaret A. Padula
Androgyny And Its Relationship To Time Competence And Inner-Directedness In A College Sample, Margaret A. Padula
Masters Theses
It has been shown that there is a tendency to ascribe different stereotyped sex-roles to men and women (Breecher, 1969; Broverman, Vogel, Braverman, Clarkson, & Rosenkrantz, 1972; Chafetz, 1974; Bem, 1974) and that these sex-roles were previously thought to be the ideal of mental health for both (Braverman, et al., Chesler, 1971). Recent investigation shows that this is not necessarily the case. It was found that a high degree of sex-role typing is not only personally limiting, but also correlated with high anxiety, low self-esteem, and lower overall intelligence (Gray, 1957; Maccoby, 1966; Fasteau, 1974). Bem (1974) has developed the …

Correlates Of Leadership Attractedness Among Instrumental And Expressive Voluntary Service Organizations In Fall River And Meade Counties Of South Dakota, William Wakefield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study of the voluntary service organizations in Fall River and Meade counties of South Dakota was conducted during 1975 to determine: 1. The various voluntary associations in Fall River and Meade counties and their functions. 2. The leaders of the various voluntary associations in these two counties, their socioeconomic characteristics, and their attractedness to these organizations. 3. Whether those leaders who are characterized as either instrumental or expressive members have joined voluntary associations because of the association's perceived instrumental or expressive orientation, or because of some other not so apparent reasons. The respective leader of the voluntary associations is …
Homosexuals And The Death Penalty In Colonial America, Louis Crompton
Homosexuals And The Death Penalty In Colonial America, Louis Crompton
Department of English: Faculty Publications
This article traces the legislative history of statutes prescribing the death penalty for sodomy in 17th-century New England and in the other American colonies. New England and some middle colonies broke with English legal tradition by adopting explicitly biblical language. After the Revolution, Pennsylvania took the lead, in 1786, in dropping the death penalty.
As the nation prepares to celebrate the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence, the question of the status of the homosexual in pre-Revolutionary America comes to mind. The Body of Liberties approved by the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in 1641 welcomed refugees seeking to escape "the …
