A Pilot Study Of Nurses' Experience Of Giving Spiritual Care, Belinda Deal
A Pilot Study Of Nurses' Experience Of Giving Spiritual Care, Belinda Deal
The Qualitative Report
Using spiritual and religious resources gives patients and families strength to cope during a crisis, but nurses often do not offer spiritual care (Kloosterhouse & Ames, 2002). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore nurses" lived experience of giving spiritual care. A descriptive phenomenological approach was used to interview 4 nurses. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) phenomenological method. Five themes were identified: spiritual care is patient-centered, spiritual care is an important part of nursing, spiritual care can be simple to give, spiritual care is not expected but is welcomed by patients, and spiritual care is given by …
Liminal Living At An Extended Stay Hotel: Feeling "Stuck" In A Housing Solution, Terri Wingate-Lewinson, June Gary Hopps, Patricia Reeves
Liminal Living At An Extended Stay Hotel: Feeling "Stuck" In A Housing Solution, Terri Wingate-Lewinson, June Gary Hopps, Patricia Reeves
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
As a result of unaffordable housing, many of America's working poor are forced to seek shelter in hotels to avoid homelessness. The concept of liminality has been used in discussions of place to describe the subjective experience of feeling in-between two states of being. Research is scant on the liminal experiences of low-income hotel residents, who are culturally invisible in society. This paper draws from data qualitatively collected via semi-structured interviews from ten low-income residents living in an extended-stay hotel. Descriptions of these residential experiences are presented along with recommendations for social workers practicing with families in this liminal situation.

Social Categories And Health Care Outcomes: African American Women And Hiv Survival In The Urban South, Alyson J. O'Daniel
Social Categories And Health Care Outcomes: African American Women And Hiv Survival In The Urban South, Alyson J. O'Daniel
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This ethnographic research examines the daily life and institutional conditions under which low-income Black women in urban North Carolina perceived and attended to HIV health-related needs. I focus specifically on the interplay among women’s living conditions, programmatic service needs, and their strategies for navigating the local system of care to explore and refine the categorical label “low income.” I found that there were significant differences among study participants in terms of their monthly incomes and financial resources, housing quality and status, and personal experiences with incarceration and substance abuse. The economic differences among women translated into social differences within the …

In Our Own Words: A Qualitative Study Of Bachelor And Master Of Social Work Interns At Vitas Hospice, Martha Elizabeth Romero
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Bachelor/Master of Social Work (BSW/MSW) interns who completed a full year internship at Vitas Hospice in San Bernardino. Using the post positivist paradigm, the researcher interviewed nine previous BSW/MSW interns to find out about their experiences as interns while at Vitas Hospice. The study was conducted by interviewing the nine interns and their responses were used to develop a theory of the interns' experience. These experiences led to learning about what was helpful and what was not helpful for their development as social workers as …

Racial/Ethnic Differences In Religious Congregation-Based Social Service Delivery Efforts, R. Khari Brown
Racial/Ethnic Differences In Religious Congregation-Based Social Service Delivery Efforts, R. Khari Brown
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The current study utilizes Swidler's (1986) cultural toolkit theory to explain racial/ethnic differences in American religious congregations' provision of social service programs. This study suggests that black Americans' reliance upon structural tools to assess poverty contributes to their congregations being more heavily involved than majority white congregations in the provision of social services that attempt to make a longer-term impact on community life (i.e. academic tutoring and job training). In contrast, white Americans' greater reliance upon individualistic tools to understand poverty arguably contributes to their congregations being more heavily involved in the provision of programs that have a shorter- term …
Using Social Construction Theory As A Foundation For Macro-Level Interventions In Communities Impacted By Hiv And Addictions, David Allen Patterson, Robert H. Keefe
Using Social Construction Theory As A Foundation For Macro-Level Interventions In Communities Impacted By Hiv And Addictions, David Allen Patterson, Robert H. Keefe
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Many professionals working with people living with HIV and alcohol and other drug addictions rely heavily on micro and mezzo-level interventions. The authors argue that although these approaches are effective for helping people living with some social problems they are too narrow for working effectively with HIV-positive and alcohol and other drug-addicted individuals. The authors use social construction theory to analyze the social problems of HIV/AIDS and addictions and make recommendations for macro-level interventions that may help curtail the dual problems of HIV and addictions.
Cyberbullying: A Workshop For Parents, Erin Jackson
Cyberbullying: A Workshop For Parents, Erin Jackson
Graduate Research Papers
There are many advantages to the new technology that is flooding the American way of life. However, with the good also comes the bad. Cyber-bullying is one example of the negative side of our ever-changing technology. Cyber-bullying can be very devastating for all people involved (Campbell, 2005). it affects the victim, the bully, family, and friends. With cyber-bullying on the rise, even more children will be affected in the future and the effects of this type of bullying will become more widespread.
Nation Of Islam In Civil Society: An Interview With Minister Don Muhammad, Castellano Turner
Nation Of Islam In Civil Society: An Interview With Minister Don Muhammad, Castellano Turner
Trotter Review
From Castellano Turner: It was a genuine pleasure to interview Minister Don Muhammad on the topic, "The Nation of Islam in civil society." The reader will be struck, as I was, by the detail and historical reach in his analysis of the Nation of Islam's consistency and evolution as a movement among Black Americans. Those who remember the Black activist rhetoric of the 1960s and 1970s will hear echoes of those volatile times. Many of the most radical groups of those times have faded into history; but like the Black church, the value and commitment of the Nation of Islam …

This account of the life and activities of a Danish religious fanatic who played a significant role in emigration has been prepared on the basis of materials available in this country. Further items are available in Denmark, but on the basis of what is known to be available, it is doubtful that this would make any appreciable difference. To my knowledge, this is the only English language story of his life.

Time To Retire: Providing For Retirement On A Danish Farm In 1863, J.R. Christianson
The Bridge
Peder S0rensen and Ane Mette were ready to retire, but the year was 1863, and the famous Danish welfare state was far in the future. So what did they do? It was a problem faced by the families of many Danish immigrants. When he was young, Peder S0rensen had come to the village of Lindeballe and bought a piece of land from the rich widow in Lindeballegaard. That was thirty-seven years ago. He and his first wife, Maren Sofie, built their farm on that piece of land, and they called it L0kkegaard.1 They had no children.

Bibliographies
This selective bibliography of intergenerational materials reflects the mission and activities of Generations Together, an intergenerational studies unit of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Social and Urban Research. The items selected for inclusion focus on the literature that describes" ... mutual beneficial interaction between young and old through community outreach, education, research, and dissemination of knowledge." (Generations Together. 1999. "Mission Statement")
This list covers the five-year period of 1994-1998 and follows an earlier bibliography that covered the period 1980-1994. The two bibliographies are similar in size, mirroring the growth of intergenerational studies as a dynamic field of research and …
Quality Of Fathering And Its Relationship With Family Background, Demographics, And Characteristics Of Present Family : A Study Of Seventh-Day Adventist Fathers And Fathers From A National Sample, Ruth Depaiva
Dissertations
Problem . Fathers have been assumed to play an important role in the socialization and education of their children. The need to understand the influence and the role of effective fathers becomes especially important in a generation which views fatherlessness as one of the most harmful demographic trends. The Seventh-day Adventist Church considers fatherhood vital for the normal functioning of the family. The present study investigated how selected variables from family background, demographics, and characteristics of present family are related to fathering as measured by self-report of fathering dimensions, practices, and satisfaction.
Method . Two groups of fathers participated in …

Toward Developing A Model Of Responsive Pastoral Care For Adult Children Of Divorce, Betty Joanne Scott
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Reports on consequences of parental divorce identify a crucial need for involvement with caring adults in recovery and healing. The literature review includes reports of research and anecdotal surveys of "adult children of divorce." The literature review stimulates questions for qualitative research with a pastoral care focus. The thesis incorporates discussion about the church's role in helping individuals recover from divorce pain. It addresses contemporary concerns in group function, particularly in issues of pastoral care. An underlying assumption is a personal understanding that providing a healing community and participating in healing process is at the core of Christian mission. The …

Families And Job Loss In Rural Newfoundland And Urban Ontario: A Systems Approach To Identifying Stress And Coping Strategies For Pastoral Care, Christina Marguerite Emmaus Edwards
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In response to the Church's mission to manifest God's love in active concern for those in need, the experiences that have helped or blocked families to develop coping skills when faced with the pain of job loss due to the crisis in the fishing industry in rural Newfoundland and the recession in urban Ontario were investigated and recommendations for systemic pastoral care were made. The data was gathered using qualitative research methods and the FACES 111: Social Adaptability and Cohesion Scale. Building on the work of Hill, McCubbin and Patterson, and using Graham's Psychosystemic map a Triple ABC-X Model of …

Quest For Balm In Gilead: Disclosure Patterns Of Church-Affiliated Family Members With Relatives Who Have 'Come Out' As Lesbian Or Gay, Margaret Elizabeth Myers
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The researcher conducted a study between September 2005 and March 2006 that explored the disclosure experiences of church-affiliated relatives of lesbians and gays in their mainline church communities. The researcher believed that findings would potentially contribute to the provision of pastoral care in church communities that would improve the life experiences of those family members whose relatives are lesbian or gay. The study used a combined qualitative and quantitative approach. Interviews took place with 16 family members to discover their disclosure experiences, and an additional 54 family members completed a 30-item questionnaire that sought additional information about disclosure experienced. The …

About 110 Christians from across the U.S. recently gathered on Chicago's South Side for a three day conference to examine and reflect on the Kairos Document of South Africa. They were joined by dozens of southern Africans, including several who were at the heart of that document's genesis, and who shared with participants some story of the document's unique evolution as 'Challenge to the Church: A Theological Comment on the Political Crisis m South Africa.'

According to Paul Schultz, president of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB), 1983 was a year of continuing leadership and growing partnership.
In his report to the almost forty participants at the recent annual meeting in Tempe, AZ, Schultz noted that "It is exciting to participate in the process that is setting a vision for continuing Indian Ministry, and then translating that vision into action. "

"The bill does not call for a large increase in overall aid funding but rather stresses reforming and redirecting aid.''
Passage of such legislation is the ambitious aim of this year's Offering of Letters, sponsored again by Bread for the World, a Christian citizenship movement directed by Lutheran pastor Art Simon.
Entitled "Hunger and Global Security," the offering of letters (letters sent to elected officials) will encourage Congress to redirect U.S. foreign aid to poor nations committed to meeting "basic human needs" in their countries-rather than funding arms build-up or elaborate redevelopment schemes.

In Iowa, elderly adults can now use food stamps to purchase meals in restaurants. This is especially helpful because many older persons have difficulty preparing their own meals.
This is just one of many innovations of Victor Preisser, Iowa's Commissioner for Social Services.
Preisser, who's created controversy by applying business management to the state's social services, was the speaker for the second annual state-wide meeting of the LHRAA State Council in Waverly, September 9.

A role conflict exists for the priest in the contemporary Catholic church. He must act as an official minister of an authoritarian church in his spiritual role and at the same time as a counselor that meets the needs of his parishioners in his secular role. Therefore, "How authoritarian must he be?" and "How per missive can he be?" It is proposed in this study that the modern Catholic priest can find an answer to this dilemma when he applies Rogers' client-centered counseling theory to his pastoral role. Rogers' theory is based on the dignity, worth, and trustworthiness of the …
