Dieting, Discrimination, And Bullying: A Contextual Case Study Of Framing In The National Association To Advance Fat Acceptance, Veronica Kay Doughman
Dieting, Discrimination, And Bullying: A Contextual Case Study Of Framing In The National Association To Advance Fat Acceptance, Veronica Kay Doughman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), the largest size acceptance organization (Kwan 2009), recognizes and frames fat as an identity in need of protective policies. This framing is not without complication. Both the framing techniques utilized by this organization and the political context in which this organization exists are extremely complex. As a way to uncover this dynamic relationship, I analyze NAAFA's framing techniques (Snow and Benford 1988). Employing this social movement organization (SMO) as a case study (Snow and Trom 2002), I analyze the way this organization's framing and reframing (Benford and Hunt 2003) shifts across time …
Representations Of Middle Age In Comedy Film: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Margaret Gatling, Jane Mills, David Lindsay
Representations Of Middle Age In Comedy Film: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Margaret Gatling, Jane Mills, David Lindsay
The Qualitative Report
The discourse of middle age includes a commonly-held perception that it is a time of crisis resulting in unusual, atypical, dramatic or extravagant behaviours. The aim of this study was to find out if the discourse of middle age, as depicted in comedy film, supports this stereotype. Three comedy films were reviewed using dispositive analysis to critically-evaluate the actions, objects and language employed to represent middle age on-screen. The findings show that crisis, sparked by a fear of ageing and with some distinct gender differences, is a frequent feature of on-screen middle age. Building on the generally accepted hypothesis that …
Academic Staff Perceptions Of Factors Underlying Program Completion By Australian Indigenous Nursing Students, Roianne West, Kim Usher, Kim Foster, Lee Stewart
Academic Staff Perceptions Of Factors Underlying Program Completion By Australian Indigenous Nursing Students, Roianne West, Kim Usher, Kim Foster, Lee Stewart
The Qualitative Report
An increase in the number of Indigenous health professionals is one way to help reduce the poor health outcomes of Australia’s Indigenous people. However, while Indigenous students are enrolling in Australian tertiary undergraduate nursing courses in increasing numbers, their completion rates remain lower than non-Indigenous students and many barriers hinder course completion. This critical interpretive qualitative study explores academic staff perceptions of factors enabling successful course completions by Indigenous nursing students from universities in Queensland, Australia. Content analysis of data revealed five themes: (a) Individual student characteristics; (b) Institutional structures, systems, and processes; (c) Relationships, connections, and partnerships; (d) Family …
Managing Family Food Consumption: Going Beyond Gender In The Kitchen, Blake Janice Martin
Managing Family Food Consumption: Going Beyond Gender In The Kitchen, Blake Janice Martin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
How have food identities and practices in upper middle class homes responded to foodie culture? While the majority of the sociological literature focuses on gendered divisions of labor in the kitchen, food security, and healthy eating, my research focuses on how foodie culture discourse has entered the home and shaped food identities and practice. My sample consists of interviews with thirteen parents, both mothers and fathers, with at least one child in the "tween" age range. Using grounded theory, I analyzed and coded the data for recurring themes. I then divided the participants into two groups based on how they …
A Dyadic Analysis Of Couple Attachment Behaviors As Predictors Of Dietary Habits And Physical Activity Levels, Stephanie Young
A Dyadic Analysis Of Couple Attachment Behaviors As Predictors Of Dietary Habits And Physical Activity Levels, Stephanie Young
Theses and Dissertations
While there is substantial evidence that marriage impacts health, no studies have explicitly analyzed the association between attachment behaviors and health practices. This study examines the relationship between couples' attachment behaviors and health practices, as measured by physical activity levels and dietary habits. Couple data was analyzed from the RELATE database (n= 4,957 couples). An Actor Partner Interdependence Model, using a multinomial logistic regression, was used to examine the relationships between attachment behaviors and health practices, as measured by activity level and dietary habits. Results for actor paths indicate that wives' own attachment behaviors significantly influence their own health practices. …

Identifying Ugliness, Defining Beauty: A Focus Group Analysis Of And Reaction To Ugly Betty, Adria Goldman, Damion Waymer
The Qualitative Report
This article discusses the ideological construct “beauty” that permeates our society by focusing specifically on socially constructed ideals of beauty and ugliness as they are represented in media text, specifically, in the TV sitcom Ugly Betty. For this study we conducted focus group interview sessions to explore the influence an alternative representation of beauty and ugliness, as portrayed in the show Ugly Betty, has on college aged females’ definition and interpretation of beauty—typically questions explored using traditional experimental and other quantitative methods. Moreover, this study provides insights into tensions surrounding how beauty and ugliness are defined and the implications of …

Pennsylvania's Family Caregiver Support Program: A Demonstration Project, Elizabeth K. Keech, Robert A. Harris, John M. Kelley, Lori F. Gerring, Christopher P. Peters
Sociological Practice
The physical, emotional, and economic burdens of family caregiving can present a serious threat to the stability and continuity of a caregiving situation. Public policymakers, aware of the high costs of replacing such voluntary efforts with publicly funded institutional care, are becoming more and more concerned about the needs of caregivers and possible intervention strategies to meet those needs.
This article begins with a description of Pennsylvania's new policy initiative for caregivers, the Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP). Following is a discussion of the evaluation of the program's demonstration phase by the Human Organization Science Institute of Villanova University. The …

The Rural Elderly: Providers' Perceptions Of Barriers To Service Delivery: Providers' Perceptions Of Barriers To Service Delivery, C. Neil Bull, Share Decroix Bane
Sociological Practice
A 1989 survey of the State Units on Aging (SUAs) produced five themes that seem to underlie the many barriers to the delivery of services to the rural elderly. A systematic review of these five themes led to the identification of 34 specific challenges or barriers, which were then placed under the appropriate theme. Such a schema has been outlined in order to aid social service providers, researchers, and students in making sense of the problems faced by the increasing number of rural elderly. In addition, in order to assess the relative importance of these barriers, a second survey of …
Everyday Lives Of The Elderly: A Dimensional Analysis, David Kowalewski, Steven Peterson
Everyday Lives Of The Elderly: A Dimensional Analysis, David Kowalewski, Steven Peterson
Sociological Practice
Considerable dissension surrounds the number and composition of the domains comprising the daily lives of the elderly. The present study employs an array of biological, economic, political, social, and psychological data obtained from a house-to-house survey of elderly citizens to derive a mapping of dimensionality. Factor analysis of the data isolated eight domains: Poor Health, Disengagement, Self-Sufficiency, Female Aging, Meaningful Employment, Political Faith, Self-Starting, and Stoicism. External validation supported the factor solution and highlighted the impact of dietary and economic deficits on the problems of the aged.

Health Policy Development: Health Promotion And Illness Prevention Among Older Adults In Illinois, Thomas R. Prohaska, Hansi K. Trites, Karen L. Scott
Sociological Practice
This paper offers recommendations for health promotion and illness prevention for older adults in Illinois and offers a structure for policy development. It is based on the premise that policy development should consider the experiences of older adults, family members, and health care providers delivering direct services. Personal experiences and expert analyses were examined in the context of strategies to promote health. This example of policy development is discussed in terms of its application to alternative methods of social and health change and identifies roles for the sociological practitioner.

Employee Health Benefits: Corporate Strategies For Cost Containment, Judith K. Barr
Employee Health Benefits: Corporate Strategies For Cost Containment, Judith K. Barr
Sociological Practice
With health care costs increasing and a major portion of employee benefits attributableto health care, employers have turned their attention to a range of strategies for controllingcosts. A typology of the employer role in employee health care is presentedwhich suggests that cost containment strategies may bring increasing influence by theemployer in the health care decisions of employees. Four roles for employers havebeen identified: (1) the Enabler, providing traditional health benefits, with increasinguse of deductibles and copayments; (2) the Advocate, providing benefit and alternativedelivery options (e.g., HMOs) with incentives for less costly choices; (3) the Mediator, providing programs which intervene in health …
