Man And Mortality, Susan Hammel May 1971

Man And Mortality, Susan Hammel

Student Scholarship

This document explores the sociological and psychological dimensions of death in modern society, specifically examining how contemporary American culture handles mortality. It begins by highlighting death as a taboo subject, noting that technocratic advancements have increasingly isolated the dying individual and complicated the definition of death through life-prolonging machinery and organ transplantation. The author references various philosophers and psychologists, such as Freud and Heidegger, to argue that individuals often maintain an intellectual acceptance of mortality while emotionally denying their own personal demise.

A significant portion of the text is dedicated to the American funeral industry and the economic costs of …

Life Styles Of Methadone Treatment Patients: Agreement Of Self Report And Informant Report, Richard Cox, Gary West

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this descriptive study was to reveal the typical life style of a representative sample of fifty male opiate addicts participating in the Oregon Methadone Treatment Program. An important goal of the research was to assess the reliability of information gathered from patients compared to data obtained from an equal number of informants. A highly structured questionnaire was designed to elicit specific responses in order to calculate the degree of concordance between patients and informants to identical items. The findings depicted the modal life style of the subjects as more socially conventional, more responsible, and less antisocial. Although …

Sectarian Value Consciousness Of The Japanese Seventh-Day Adventists, Minoru Hirota Jan 1971

Sectarian Value Consciousness Of The Japanese Seventh-Day Adventists, Minoru Hirota

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The objective of this study was to find how the sectarian values of the SDA church were assimilated among the Japanese SDA church members. In order to clarify the characteristics of the sectarian values, their origin and contents were discussed in the first part of this study. It was concluded that the SDA value system contained three sub-value systems, -- namely, the eschatological ethics of the Advent movement, the pietism of the rivivalistic [sic] tradition, and the rural fundamentalism of the Mid-West. Some factors in the Japanese value system were discussed in relation to the assimilation of the sectarian values, …
