[Review Of] Ken Harrison, Producer. The Last Of The Caddoes (Film), David M. Gradwohl Jan 1984

[Review Of] Ken Harrison, Producer. The Last Of The Caddoes (Film), David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Several staff members and students in anthropology and Indian Studies programs at Iowa State University had the opportunity to view the film, The Last of the Caddoes, during the spring of 1984. The University's Media Resource Center had obtained the film on approval and sought our advice as to whether it should be purchased for on campus classroom use and for rental to interest groups off campus. The film came with a respectable-looking pedigree: it was based on a short story by William Humphrey, an author of considerable repute in Texas; it was produced by Ken Harrison with funding from …

The Extension Programme, W K. Russell, G. K. Palmer Jan 1984

The Extension Programme, W K. Russell, G. K. Palmer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

From the start of the Peel-harvey study in 1976, scientific research and extension have been closely linked. Trials, some involving major drainage works, have been set up on about 30 farms and several field days and seminars have been held.

The Peel-Harvey Study Group anticipates that farmer acceptance of the Department of agriculture's recommendations will reduce the phosphorus input to the estuary by 30 to 40 per cent over the next three to five years. At the same time farmers will benefit from modified cultural practices better suited to the sandy soils of the coastal plain.

Abstracts From The Twelfth Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In an attempt to record a sense of the formal sessions of the 1984 Conference, we asked the Chairs to assemble abstracts and discussant comments for their sessions. Although we are pleased with a response greater than in 1983, we are aiming for one hundred percent in 1985.

Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott Jan 1984

Ethnicity And Empowerment: Implications For Psychological Training In The 1980s, Linda M.C. Abbott

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Psychological services, as a part of the health-care system, have been "embedded in specific configurations of cultural meanings and social relationships,"[1] and the role of patients and healers cannot be understood apart from that context. This article explores the failure of psychology to effectively address the inhibiting impact of racism on human development, and it suggests a corrective agenda for the training of socially responsive and responsible psychologists, an agenda derived from the literacy education model of Paulo Freire.

[Review Of] Jane Katz. Artists In Exile: American Odessey [Odyssey], Charles Mueller Jan 1984

[Review Of] Jane Katz. Artists In Exile: American Odessey [Odyssey], Charles Mueller

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The major accomplishment of this collection of first-person reminiscences and third-person authorial interjection is its presentation of an impressive collection of imported talents, all of whom suffer (often gladly) the intellectual and spiritual privations of the West in exchange for its relative economic and social largess. To paraphrase Churchill, democracy (read "capitalism") is the worst form of government except for all the others. This book says this geometrically, with the lines and curves formed by the various interviews forming a final, however planular, shape.

Administración Comunitaria Del Reciclamiento De Desechos: El Sirdo, Marianne Schmink Jan 1984

Administración Comunitaria Del Reciclamiento De Desechos: El Sirdo, Marianne Schmink

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Microcomputers And Local Government: A Handbook -- Participants' Manual, Donald F. Norris

Publications

This handbook has its origins in a conversation between the author and Dr. Theodore Maher in the spring of 1981. Creación De Empleos Distintos De Las Artesanías Para Las Mujeres De Bangladesh, Marty Chen Jan 1984

Creación De Empleos Distintos De Las Artesanías Para Las Mujeres De Bangladesh, Marty Chen

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill Jan 1984

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Visual studies in the social sciences have recently begun to enjoy increased popularity. Like the interdisciplinary excitement which earlier linked. the behavioral and social sciences to problems in environmental design, this event points to yet greater potential for collaboration between the social sciences, on the one hand, and the design disciplines, on the other. Whereas the interdisciplinary environmental design movement tended to focus specifically on the relationship between humans and the built urban environment (although some landscape architects properly extended their investigations to rural and natural environments), the intersection of visual sociology and the sociology of the visual arts encompasses …

Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller Jan 1984

Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a replication of Canning's 1955 survey of family life in Provo, Utah. The original sample consisted of 239 couples who were married and currently living there. The replication was a 1983 mail survey that used many of Canning's original questions and included a sample of 255 Provo families.

This study measured changes in several courtship and family variables using the companionship family as an ideal type. Findings included increases in the emphasis on the role of romantic love in mate selection, handsomeness as an attractive quality that women seek in a spouse, family members seeking recreation outside …

Changing The Definition Of The Situation: Toward A Theory Of Sociological Intervention, Roger A. Straus Jan 1984

Changing The Definition Of The Situation: Toward A Theory Of Sociological Intervention, Roger A. Straus

Clinical Sociology Review

The sociological intervention is identified as (1) directed at the operational definition of the situation and (2) taking into account the multiple, interacting layers of social participation framing human predicaments and their resolution. These are further differentiated, employing case examples, in terms of mode of attack — direct, indirect, or cooperative — and level of social context at which the intervention is directed — the personal, group, organizational, or social world being described here as "quantum'' levels of interest. While others may conduct such interventions, the sociological intervention is characterized as the special domain of the clinical sociologist.

Clinical Sociological Perspectives On Social Impacts: From Assessment To Management, Kevin Preister, James A. Kent Jan 1984

Clinical Sociological Perspectives On Social Impacts: From Assessment To Management, Kevin Preister, James A. Kent

Clinical Sociology Review

The social impact assessment (SIA) field is moving into a critical and central position in resource decision making in our society. Initially conceived as part of the environmental impact statement (EIS) process, SIA is beginning to be recognized as having dimensions far beyond its early scope. This article focuses on the extension of SIA work into the area of social impact management. Current trends in the SIA field leading to the emphasis on management are reviewed, followed by a discussion of the issue-centered approach to SIA. A discussion of decentralization trends sets the stage for understanding the emerging demand for …
