The Youth In Service To Elders (Yiste) Program: A Case Study, Sally Newman, Heather Newman, Roland Onawola, Caroline Thompson Jan 1986

The Youth In Service To Elders (Yiste) Program: A Case Study, Sally Newman, Heather Newman, Roland Onawola, Caroline Thompson

Intergenerational

The Youth In Service To Elders (YISTE) Program was developed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to meet some of the psychosocial needs of the frail elderly and young student volunteers. The objectives were to promote positive interactions between these groups, to improve the psychosocial well-being of the frail elderly, and to improve the student volunteers' feelings about themselves and about aging. This paper describes the YISTE program and its evaluation. The program sequence was recruitment of youth and elders, training of youth participants, supervision of the youth and elder participants, recognition, and evaluation. Two distinctive features of the program were the involvement …

Microcomputer And Local Government, Donald F. Norris Jan 1986

Microcomputer And Local Government, Donald F. Norris

Publications

In 1976, two young Californians named Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started a revolution. It was a quiet revolution... no shots were fired... no demonstrations occurred... there were no casualties, but it was a revolution nevertheless... a revolution that will have long-lasting results. That year these two young men developed the Apple, the first commercially successful microcomputer.

Boston School Desegregation: The Fallowness Of Common Ground, Robert A. Dentler Jan 1986

Boston School Desegregation: The Fallowness Of Common Ground, Robert A. Dentler

New England Journal of Public Policy

This essay scrutinizes the book by J. Anthony Lukas, Common Ground: A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three American Families, to assess whether it presents a valid and reliable account of the issues, people, and events it chronicles. The substantive core of the book is shown to be the politics of Boston public school desegregation. The parts played by the three families in this event are dramatically portrayed but cannot be corroborated and are not interpreted. The parts played by five major policy leaders, when tested against other evidence, are found to be distorted, questionable legends woven in …

The Women's Construction Collective: Building For The Future, Ruth Mcleod Jan 1986

The Women's Construction Collective: Building For The Future, Ruth Mcleod

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of SEEDS focuses on a project developed to integrate low-income women into Jamaica's construction industry. In two years, 34 women passed through the project's basic training and skills upgrading courses. More than 90 percent of these women became employed, the majority as masons and carpenters. The story of how this field was identified as a potential source of income for women, and how the project developed and evolved in response to changing circumstances, presents many useful lessons. These should be of particular interest to those seeking to identify employment areas where women's participation is feasible and in helping …

The Danish Immigrant, Signe Nielsen Betsinger Jan 1986

The Danish Immigrant, Signe Nielsen Betsinger

The Bridge

In 1979 I had the opportunity to travel with a group to China where I had the good fortune to visit Tachai, a model agricultural commune. Up until the mid-1940s, generations of the inhabitants in this area had been impoverished. They had lived in caves in hills. Their crops had been destroyed over and over by drought, flooding, insects, and hailstorms. In 1945 land reform was insituted and the peasants set up the first mutual aid team in China. By 1953 they had a ten-year plan for reclaiming the land and building new homes. Just when the plan was finished …

Clinical Sociology In France And Quebec: A Primer And Commentary, Part I, J. Barry Gurdin Jan 1986

Clinical Sociology In France And Quebec: A Primer And Commentary, Part I, J. Barry Gurdin

Clinical Sociology Review

Clinical sociology has occupied a noteworthy place in several French-speaking societies. Clinical sociology, socioanalysis, action research, and psychosociology—four prominent signifiers of this field—are found in the French-language literature and practice. In this paper their historically changing meanings are reviewed with examples from France and Quebec. The strengths and weaknesses of this literature and practice are discussed. Finally, French, Quebec, and American clinical sociologies are compared and contrasted.

Using Sociology To Analyze Human And Organizational Problems: A Humanistic Perspective To Link Theory And Practice, Doyle Paul Johnson Jan 1986

Using Sociology To Analyze Human And Organizational Problems: A Humanistic Perspective To Link Theory And Practice, Doyle Paul Johnson

Clinical Sociology Review

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that sociological theory is a major part of the knowledge base needed by sociological practitioners, including both applied and clinical sociologists. Four well-established theories are reviewed to assess their perspectives on social reality, the kinds of problems they would be expected to highlight, and the types of solutions they would be likely to suggest. These are: symbolic interactionism, functionalism or systems theory, exchange theory, and critical theory. It is pointed out that these theories can stimulate sociologists to assess whether their priorities focus on the maintenance of organizational structures or on the …

Clinical Sociology And Preventing Nuclear War, Louis Kriesberg Jan 1986

Clinical Sociology And Preventing Nuclear War, Louis Kriesberg

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper outlines major kinds of social science research, especially sociological, that have relevance for nuclear war prevention and that would be relevant to a variety of clients. Research that has been done as well as work that could be done to help prevent nuclear war are noted. The research topics are related to policy suggestions about lessening the risks of nuclear war. The emphasis is on research relevant to a wide range of US clients and who are not operating in a very short time frame.

The Sociological Expert Withness In A Case Of Collective Interracial Violence, Leonard Gordon Jan 1986

The Sociological Expert Withness In A Case Of Collective Interracial Violence, Leonard Gordon

Clinical Sociology Review

In a case in which riot-melee felony charges were brought against five teenage members of an all-black church in southern Arizona, the legal defense team requested a sociological expert witness. This paper presents 1) the nature of the request; 2) the definition of the situation to determine if serving as a sociological expert witness was an appropriate role; 3) excerpts from the recorded testimony, demonstrating the use of symbolic interactionist emergent norm theory, as an explanation for the defendents' behavior; 4) the disposition of the case; 5) the inherent interventionist advocacy role in expert witnessing; and 6) the implications of …

Multiple Dimensions Of The Moral Majority Platform: Shifting Interest Group Coalitions, Helen A. Moore, Hugh P. Whitt Jan 1986

Multiple Dimensions Of The Moral Majority Platform: Shifting Interest Group Coalitions, Helen A. Moore, Hugh P. Whitt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The issues raised by the New Political Right and the Moral Majority have overlapped in recent political history. Researchers have assumed that a single additive scale across conservative issues can identify the base of support for the Moral Majority as an organization. We examine general support for the Moral Majority separately from support for six specific issues: teaching creationism, voluntary public school prayer, military defense spending, gun control, pornography and abortion. Data are from a 1982 random sample of adult respondents from Nebraska (N = 1907).

Overall, support for the Moral Majority organization is low. Discriminant analysis identifies fundamentalist and …

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge Jan 1986

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Experiencing continual re-creation during each of the twenty-one years preceding 1986, this study's core may continue to unfold indefinitely. Although discovered to encapsulate elements grounded elsewhere, this culture centers upon an experimental musical group known as the Grateful Dead. First encountering the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1981, their ageless repertoire failed to capture me, but an unusual audience filled my senses. Flowing print skirts and other bright but tired attire suggested San Francisco of a time then fifteen years past. Subdued excitement replaced the alcohol inhibition of many rock shows. As the band finally appeared, a peacefully elated …

The Vanguard (Vol. 33, No. 2), Mar-Apr 1986, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Many minority ethnic/racial groups in the United States experience higher-than-average unemployment rates, but none approaches the level of unemployment among Native Americans. A report prepared last fall by the Full Employment Action Council, the Lutheran Council U.S. A. and other sponsors documents the ''horrendous" and "devastating" rates of joblessness among both reservation and urban Indians.

In addition, the report, "American Indian Unemployment: Confronting a Distressing Reality, notes that federal assistance programs have been drastically reduced in recent years, leaving Native Americans with income and education levels far below national averages.

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager Jan 1986

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation develops and applies a method for studying viewers' perceptions of gender roles on television. Two hypotheses–selective perception and oversocialization–were tested. In contrast to other studies which rely on subjects' long-term memories, subjects were shown a tape of One Day at a Time, a popular television show, immediately prior to responding to a questionnaire on the show. Subjects were also asked for demographic data and administered the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test. T-Tests and correlations were done, using groups formed around the sex role attitudes of the subjects (as measured by the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test), as …

The Depo-Provera Controversy: A Sociological Analysis, Pamela A. Hayman Dec 1985

The Depo-Provera Controversy: A Sociological Analysis, Pamela A. Hayman

Masters Theses

This study is a sociological analysis of the Depo- Provera Controversy. The strong programme in the sociology of science was the method employed for examining the social and political dimensions of the decision-making process underlying science and technology as it relates to the approval of Depo-Provera as a contraceptive in the United States. The data were consistent with the social constructionist perspective, rather than the positivistic view of science. In almost every instance, scientific conclusions followed alignment rather than arising from objective, universalistic analysis. Upjohn scientists and family planners concluded that Depo-Provera was safe and advocated its use; feminists and …

Organizational Deviance: A Humanist View, David R. Simon Sep 1985

Organizational Deviance: A Humanist View, David R. Simon

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The sociological paradigm proposed by C. Wright Mills is advocated as a basis (model) for the study of elite deviance of an organizational nature. The relationship between social structure and social character within organizational environments is examined utilizing central concepts regarding both social character (i.e., alienation, other-directedness, and inauthenticity) and bureaucratic structural characteristics (e.g., routinization and fragmentation of tasks, dehumanization and groupthink, the construction of guilt neutralizing ideologies, and front activities). The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of this approach for a humanist study of crime.
