[Review Of] Lydio F. Tomasi, Ed. Italian Americans: New Perspectives In Italian Immigration And Ethnicity, Gloria Lothrop
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
There are those who have heralded the 1980s as "The Decade of the Italian American" as many of the 20 million Americans of Italian descent achieve increasing prominence in politics, business, education and the arts. This new role assumed by Americans of immigrant stock has necessitated revised patterns of investigation addressing the impact of socio-economic mobility, the effects of transmigration and the growing phenomenon of exogenous marriage. For example, of the Italian American women born since 1950, between two-thirds and three-quarters have married outside the ethnic group. Finally, the size and multigenerational sampling provided by the Italian American population invites …

[Review Of] Robert J. Norrell. Reaping The Whirlwind: The Civil Rights Movement In Tuskegee, Floyd W. Hayes Iii
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Reaping the Whirlwind is a case study of the black American struggle for civil rights and racial democracy in a unique community of the Black Belt South. It is a story of Tuskegee's white political hegemony and the black elite's early cooperation with and later mild challenge to that dominance. In 1880, as a result of collaboration between white politicians and Tuskegee's black leadership, the Democrats secured political control of the Alabama state legislature. The following year, as pay-off for the deal, Tuskegee Institute was established with Booker T. Washington at the helm, and the goal became one of making …
[Review Of] Jules Tygiel. Baseball's Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson And His Legacy, Stewart Rodnon
[Review Of] Jules Tygiel. Baseball's Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson And His Legacy, Stewart Rodnon
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The relationship of black Americans to baseball has never been explained completely, Jules Tygiel believes, because previous accounts have failed to place the events and personalities "into a social or historical context." To rectify this, he has researched meticulously ( thirty-two pages of notes and references) the well-known Jackie Robinson story and widened his focus to deal with black Americans and their baseball athletes from 1945 to 1970. His thesis is that Jackie Robinson and professional baseball in general form a paradigm and a foreshadowing for the American integration process, particularly the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Abstracts From The Fifteenth Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Each year the conference organizers attempt to provide a complete overview of the Annual Conference by publishing abstracts of the papers and presentations as well as the comments provided by the respondents to each session. Although we usually fail to get a one hundred percent response, the following abstracts and comments provide an excellent representation of the variety of responses to the conference theme, "Ethnicity: Propaganda, Persuasion, and Political Economy." These statements reflect both pedagogical and theoretical responses to the issues, suggesting directions both for teaching and further research on the topics.

The Vanguard
Participants at the 1987 Human Relations Institute meeting Waukesha, WI, July 17-19 were challenged to respond to the suffering of the world while being renewed by the promise of Jubilee and hope proclaimed in the scriptures.
In a keynote address Friday afternoon, the Rev. Barbara Lundblad, pastor of Our Saviours Atonement Lutheran Church in New York City, urged participants to reclaim the whole of the Bible both Old and New Testaments to help understand the Jubilee tradition.

The Challenges And Limitations Of Conducting Research Among The Old Order Amish, Jerry Savells, Thomas Foster
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The Old Order or "horse and buggy" Amish have been a part of American society for more than two centuries. Today, some 95,000 Amish persons reside in over twenty states, a Canadian province, and two countries in Latin America. Although variations exist in the social values and behavioral practices within different Amish communities (or church districts), they have basically resisted the acculturation process that would reinforce and promote a standard of living and lifestyle embraced by most of the non-Amish in the U.S.

[Review Of] Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe. Viewfinders: Black Women Photographers, David M. Johnson, Yolanda Burwell
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This is a book that is important for what it begins and for what will follow it, as well as for what it is. It demonstrates that there have been hundreds of black women photographers, working almost from the time the camera was invented, whose contributions, and even existence, have not been documented. Mainstream histories of photography have included few black photographers and no black female photographers. I expect this book to stimulate others to research the many women photographers mentioned here, as well as those who are missing, and I hope they do this research before the materials are …
Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS focuses on ways in which women have been involved in a government forest conservation and restoration program in Nepal. As is common with many large-scale projects with a general impact, women were not a direct focus of the project's original design. As activities got underway, however, both the Nepali staff and their expatriate colleagues quickly realized that the direct involvement of women was crucial to the success of the project's participatory strategy. Over the initial five years, 1980 to 1985, a number of approaches to addressing women's needs and generating their active participation were tried. The …

Sociological Strategies For Developing Community Resources: Services For Abused Wives As An Example, Mary C. Sengstock
Sociology Faculty Research Publications
There has been increased concern for the problem of family violence in recent years, and an accompanying interest in providing services to meet the needs of victims. This has led to research efforts, as well as to the development of new community services. Clinical sociologists can do much to assure that the development of community resources and empirical research in this area precede hand in hand. This article reports on the work of a committee, chaired by the author, which used social research and knowledge of sociological principles in the development of services for battered wives in a major metropolitan …

Predictors Of Reliance On Children's Self-Care By Urban Black And White Families In The United States, Carol Hoffman Culbertson
Predictors Of Reliance On Children's Self-Care By Urban Black And White Families In The United States, Carol Hoffman Culbertson
Honors Papers
The theoretical basis for the present study derives from the recent emergence of child care as a major issue of social policy and from the apparent influence of social networks on child care practices. The review of the literature which follows will describe the development of concern over child care policy and practice and the current state of research relative to it, with emphasis on studies of self-care. Further discussion of the role of social networks in child-care choices and the general differences between blacks and whites in the use of these networks will provide the basis for the hypothesis …
Bomb Talk: Framing The Unthinkable, Michael R. Hill
Bomb Talk: Framing The Unthinkable, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Our cultural apparatus appears ill-equipped, if not unable, to conceptualize or frame the present nuclear reality in a way that lets us effectively come to grips with it as it really is: a deployed, targeted, industrialized capacity to instantaneously annihilate all human life. This paper demonstrates that we key or transform our nuclear reality in virtually every conceivable way, thus normalizing it and treating it culturally the same as any other phenomenon, including the most mundane. I argue therefore that we have before us the immense and challenging task of finding a way – working with flawed and inadequate intellectual …

Belief Systems And Illness Experiences: The Case Of Non-Medical Healing Groups, Meredith B. Mcguire, D. J. Kantor
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
An important, and often neglected, aspect of the illness experience is meaning—that is, how affected persons make sense of their experiences. Responses to illness, coping strategies, and the healing process itself are all shaped by the meanings people apply to their illnesses. This chapter examines some of the nonmedical approaches to illness used by middle-class suburbanites in order to highlight the importance of meaning in all illness experiences. The particular interpretations applied in these alter-. native healing systems vary, but the way these interpretive frameworks shape the illness experience sheds light on the broader significance of meaning in health, …

Habermas' Sociological Theory As A Basis For Clinical Practice With Small Groups, Valerie Ann Malhotra
Habermas' Sociological Theory As A Basis For Clinical Practice With Small Groups, Valerie Ann Malhotra
Clinical Sociology Review
Jurgen Habermas' sociological analysis of "power-distorted" communication, of "instrumental action vs. symbolic interaction," and his theory of "universal pragmatics," involving an analysis of the "ideal speech situation" or "communicative competency," was used as a basis for clinical practice with 53 women students divided into five small groups.1 Habermas' theory provided the basis for the assessment of the need for clinical intervention, as well as the model for structuring the communication processes in the groups to alleviate the effects of the distorted communication characteristic of life in post-capitalist society.
The groups of students were involved as participants in a self-reflective …
