Critique [Of Asians, Jews, And The Legacy Of Midas By Alan Spector], Steve Gold

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In reading Alan Spector's paper, I was reminded of British sociologist Christie Davies' cross-national analysis of ethnic jokes. In it, she argues that majority members of a society stereotype others in order to reduce their own anxiety about social position. Davies found that such jokes tend to fall into either one of two catagories [categories]. The first and most common type of ethnic joke addresses those groups who live below one's own station in life.[1] By referring to them, one can elevate his/her own status and hence feel a bit more secure. A second type of joke ridicules groups who …

Equity And Excellence In Education--Compatible Concepts Or Hostile Abstractions?, Theresa E. Mccormick

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Since 1983, with the publication of five well-known national reports calling for reform in education,[2] the later release of other reports by prestigious groups (such as the Carnegie Task Force on Teaching as a Profession and the Holmes Group), and the enactment of approximately 700 state statutes focused on school reform,[3] the push for excellence has overshadowed earlier commitments to equity in schools. As Orlich writes, "In at least one instance, implementing the proposals of these two groups [Carnegie and Holmes] would have the same undesirable effect: reducing the number of minority teachers from few to virtually none."[4] This movement …

Asians, Jews, And The Legacy Of Midas, Alan Spector

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In much of the U.S. media today, Asian-Americans are being hailed as the new "wonder group." Local newspapers seem to be filled with articles about how this student from Pakistan won the spelling bee and that student from Japan won the math contest. Weekly news magazines carry articles extolling this phenomenon, and many liberals and conservatives alike enthusiastically promote the stereotype: liberals because it combats the racist myth that people of color are intellectually inferior to Euro-Americans ("whites") and conservatives because it can be used to promote the idea that any ethnic group can make it if only they work …

National Newspaper Analysis Of The Press Coverage Of Jesse Jackson's 1984 Presidential Campaign: The Confirmation Of The Candidate, J. Gregory Payne, Scott C. Ratzan, Robert A. Baukus Jan 1989

National Newspaper Analysis Of The Press Coverage Of Jesse Jackson's 1984 Presidential Campaign: The Confirmation Of The Candidate, J. Gregory Payne, Scott C. Ratzan, Robert A. Baukus

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Jesse Jackson's 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns have motivated thousands of citizens throughout America to take a more active role in politics. The 1984 campaign witnessed many previously unregistered Americans actively participating in Jackson's call to join the "Rainbow Coalition." Four years later, Jackson once again hit a responsive chord within the American electorate, broadening his support base in his second run for the White House. His vibrant campaigns presented challenges not only to the American system of government, but also to accepted journalistic traditions in campaign reporting. Specifically, the dilemma has been a difficult one for journalists responsible for …

[Review Of] Rodolfo O. De La Garza, Ed. Ignored Voices: Public Opinion Polls And The Latino Community, Richard Santillan

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The past several years have witnessed the publication of a handful of books and articles focusing on Latino politics in the United States. These studies fall into three general categories: the first type of research attempts to shatter the popular myths about the lack of political sophistication among Latinos by discussing institutional obstacles which hinder Latino political aspirations; the second kind of study documents the rich organizational history of Latinos over the past century; the third type of literature promotes a variety of theoretical models as a way to explain the lack of influence of Latinos on the electoral process.

Abstracts From The Seventeenth Annual Naes Conference

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Johnnella Butler, chair of Afro-American Studies at the University of Washington, directed the seventeenth annual Conference on Ethnic and Minority Studies in Seattle. Graduate students and staff from the Department of American Ethnic Studies provided support for the planning and several students from the University of Washington participated either as presenters or observers. Participants from throughout the United States arrived in Seattle during a rare spring snowstorm to hear papers on the conference theme, "Ethnicity in America: Interdisciplinary Approaches." Participants were welcomed by James D. Nason, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington, and the General …

[Review Of] Philip E. Webber. Pella Dutch: The Portrait Of A Language And Its Use In One Of Iowa's Ethnic Communities, Phillips G. Davies

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book does exactly what it says it will, namely to study how language is used by the some two hundred and fifty citizens of Pella who still make use of it. As such it should be useful to those interested in nineteeth [nineteenth] century emigrants from Europe whose descendants are still clinging to part of their ethnic roots.

What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker Jan 1989

What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker

School of Public Health Faculty Research

The impact of various child care arrangements on the health of infants and preschool children is not known in any systematic way, yet by 1990 more than 10 million of these children may be receiving their care in day care facilities (1). Concerns over the health of these children and health practices within day care facilities have already led some States to place regulation of day care facilities under the jurisdiction of the department of health (2,3), and others are presently considering such legislation. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently published "Health in Day Care," a manual …

Many communities want to enhance retail trade as one part of their economic development effort. While most retail businesses in a community serve local residents employed in such basic-sector businesses as manufacturing, agriculture, and health care, retailing is a significant source of employment in itself.

Mari Sandoz’ Sociological Imagination: Capital City As An Ideal Type, Michael R. Hill Jan 1989

Mari Sandoz’ Sociological Imagination: Capital City As An Ideal Type, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper examines Mari Sandoz' (1939) novel Capital City from the perspective of sociology. ‘I outline Sandoz' data collection methods and consider her use of ideal-type analysis and sociological imagination. From the perspective of literary critics it may be, as Helen Stauffer (1982: 131) judged, that Capital City "is not a successful novel." It is not my purpose, however, to contest the merit of Sandoz' work on literary grounds. Rather, I invoke the viewpoint of the sociologist and note the criteria on which I conclude that Capital City is a complex and well-executed sociological study.

Anger Among Prospective Adoptive Parents: Structural Determinants And Management Strategies, Kerry Daly Jan 1989

Anger Among Prospective Adoptive Parents: Structural Determinants And Management Strategies, Kerry Daly

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper focuses on anger experienced by prospective adoptive parents as they go through infertility and the formal adoption process. Qualitative interviews were done with seventy-four infertile couples who were at various stages in their consideration of adoption. Using a sociology of emotions perspective, I examine the source of their anger by focusing on the structural power imbalance between infertile couples and the physicians and adoption agency personnel to whom they turn for help in becoming parents. I analyze the way that this power unbalance constrains their anger and examine the way it is managed according to the "feeling rules" …

Reducing Adolescent Drug Abuse: Sociological Strategies For Community Practice, W. David Watts Jan 1989

Reducing Adolescent Drug Abuse: Sociological Strategies For Community Practice, W. David Watts

Clinical Sociology Review

Strategies for community-based sociological practice are discussed. The role of the sociologist in helping communities to recognize a social problem is analyzed in the context of social construction of reality theory. Once a community accepts that it has a problem with adolescent drug abuse, control and peer association theories can guide sociologists who wish to join with community leaders to combat drug abuse. By strengthening bonds among community organizations, parents, and other groups, the community tolerance for drug abuse is reduced and support for peer prevention is built.

Relationship Between Child Temperament, Parental Knowledge Of Child Development, And Parental Stress, Nancy J. Carbonell Jan 1989

Relationship Between Child Temperament, Parental Knowledge Of Child Development, And Parental Stress, Nancy J. Carbonell

Dissertations

Problem. Despite current awareness that temperament of children has been related to parental frustration and lack of child developmental knowledge has led to unrealistic expectations and parental stress, definitive information is needed regarding the relationship between (1) child temperament, (2) parental knowledge of child development, and (3) parental stress.

Method. One hundred and forty mothers with 3-year-old children were studied using the Thomas and Chess' Parent Questionnaire to measure parental perception of child temperament, the Knowledge of Child Development Inventory (Larsen & Juhasz) to assess maternal knowledge of child development, and Abidin's Parenting Stress Index to measure maternal stress. Demographic …

The Presentation Of The City On ‘Fat-Letter’ Postcards, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill Jan 1989

The Presentation Of The City On ‘Fat-Letter’ Postcards, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Media-constructed rituals are cultural products. Unlike participatory rituals, my focus thus far, media-constructed rituals have more stability, higher internal order and consistency, and greater potential to reach people over time. Cultural artifacts from the past can reach people in their own era, the present, and the future, and in this way they provide a source of continuity even for rapidly changing societies. We begin this section of the book by examining a small artifact in an interaction ritual, the presentation of the city on a particular style of postcard.

Cities are complex human environments that are frequently symbolized in the …

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang Jan 1989

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang

Publications and Research

"The time is past when librarians can assume no patron is lesbian or gay, or that there is no interest in gay research," Dan Tsang and Polly Thistlethwaite wrote in the introduction to the 'Lesbian and Gay' section of Katzes' 1989 edition of Magazines for Libraries. This title review of the queer periodicals of the day was intended to serve as a guide and justification for 'mainstream' libraries' collection building. The number and range of titles in Thistlethwaite and Tsang's collaborative entries (1989, 1992, and 1995) far exceeded any mainstream library collection known to either of the authors who …

Children's Video Usage: A Comparative Study Of Nine To Eleven-Year-Olds Living In London And New York, Seth P. Welins Jan 1989

Children's Video Usage: A Comparative Study Of Nine To Eleven-Year-Olds Living In London And New York, Seth P. Welins

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The goal of this cross-cultural study identifies which video and non-video related activities are selected by nine-to-eleven year old children living in New York and London, England. Four hundred children were surveyed and interviewed about their television and VCR viewing habits and their use of computers and computer/video games as well their after-school, non-video activities.

A uses-gratifications approach provides a general framework for the analyses of the data. These data show that there is a complex interplay between children's activity choices and the occupational status of the child's parents, the child's race/ethnicity, gender, ecological environment, family structure and social structure. …
