Congress Likely To Pass Kennedy's National Community Service Measure, The Committee On Labor And Human Resources Jan 1990

Congress Likely To Pass Kennedy's National Community Service Measure, The Committee On Labor And Human Resources

Special Topics, General

A bill by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), the National and Community Service Act, S.1430, should have little trouble gaining congressional approval next session, unless President Bush's Points-of-Light Initiative can muster sufficient support within Congress to challenge it. Kennedy's proposal recently gained strength as a bipartisan effort when Sen. James Jeffords (R-Vt) and Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) signed on in mid-November as the 22nd and 23rd co-sponsors. Over twenty national service-related bills were introduced in the first session of the 101st Congress. Components of many of these bills ended up in S.1430, which further suggests that the bill stands very good …

Hospice: A Descriptive Analysis Of The Structure And Formation Of Hospice Organization In West Virginia, Rebecca Ann Lowery Jan 1990

Hospice: A Descriptive Analysis Of The Structure And Formation Of Hospice Organization In West Virginia, Rebecca Ann Lowery

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

It has been recognized that a hospice must move through several stages in order to become an organization. Moving from a volunteer or interest group to an operating hospice requires detailed planning and organizing. Also, community support and financial stability are crucial in the developing stages. The developing hospice also needs support from the medical community, because physicians make most of the patient referrals to the hospice program.

Several reasons may be given to explain why the Hospice of Lincoln County was unsuccessful in developing into an operating organization. First, the board of directors for this developing hospice were the …

The Monster In Our House: Racial Incidents On College Campuses, Farrell J. Webb Jan 1990

The Monster In Our House: Racial Incidents On College Campuses, Farrell J. Webb

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Reports of racial incidents on college campuses have risen dramatically in the past four years. Data from recent surveys indicate that minority students, specifically blacks, will experience some form of discrimination during their academic careers.[1] Recent data from other studies reveal that racial and ethnic violence has occurred on at least 70 U.S. college campuses.[2] Efforts to assert one racial/ethnic group over another have often created social conflicts. These social disagreements may take several forms, usually imitating behavior outside of school: shouting discriminatory remarks or becoming physically aggressive or violent.

College Students' Attitudes On Neighborhood Integration: From The Classroom To The Community And Back Again, Robin P. Clair, Michael J. Mcgoun

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

I grew up in an all white suburb, well, almost all white. There were two black families that literally lived on the wrong side of the tracks. Two large run-down old houses sat within five feet of the rumbling trains. Sometimes my family drove past those houses in our old station wagon. On days that our drive was interrupted by a crossing train, I would watch the barefoot black children playing by the street. I never thought of our suburb as being segregated, at least not until I was in high school.

Abstracts From The Eighteenth Annual Conference National Association For Ethnic Studies, Inc

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

For the third year in a row, Conference participants were greeted with snow and ice; however, the chilly weather was not indicative of the warmth generated in sessions and special events planned by Conference organizers Larry Estrada and Jeannie Ortega. The theme, "Ethnicity, Justice, and the National Experience," was addressed by plenary session speakers Tom Romero and Dana Sims. Ray Rodrigues and Keith Miser presented a model for dealing with diversity on campus with the "Colorado State University Perspective on Diversity. "Orage Quarles III, president and publisher of the Fort ColIins Coloradan, eloquently addressed participants at the banquet with his …

[Review Of] Clara E. Rodriguez. Puerto Ricans Born In The U.S.A, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

It may be apocryphal by now, but it has often been said, and it is repeated again by Rodriguez in her most recent contribution to the literature that "Puerto Ricans still hold the dubious distinction of being among the most researched and least understood people in the United States, if not the world. "Rodriguez's use of the existing voluminous literature on the Puerto Rican experience certainly reinforces this widely held belief. Puerto Ricans are the second largest Latino ethnic group in the United States, and in New York City one out of every eight people is Puerto Rican. This is …

[Review Of] Cary D. Wintz. Black Culture And The Harlem Renaissance, John C. Walter

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In 1925 Professor Alain Locke argued in The New Negro that the Negro was "moving forward under the control largely of his own objectives ..." which were "none other than the ideals of American institutions and democracy." This allowed for blacks everywhere to be called "New Negroes" but nowhere were there as many New Negroes as in Harlem. The activities of these people in politics, arts, literature, music and the like between World War I and the Depression Era came to be called the Harlem Renaissance.

[Review Of] Lois Weis, Ed. Class, Race, & Gender In American Education, Margaret A. Laughlin Jan 1990

[Review Of] Lois Weis, Ed. Class, Race, & Gender In American Education, Margaret A. Laughlin

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Class, Race & Gender in American Education should be read by preservice and experienced educators and social scientists who are interested in teaching young people who come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, represent various racial and ethnic heritages, and those with special needs. School as a major socializing institution often holds the key for many students. It is also important to study the ways individuals and groups prepare for the future. Some students are successful in school settings, but many become discouraged and are pushed out due to the structure and/or culture of the school. This volume seeks to enrich this …

Symbolic And Competitive Racism On Campus, Monica L. Jackson Jan 1990

Symbolic And Competitive Racism On Campus, Monica L. Jackson

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

After a short hiatus, overt racism is on the rise again. Increases in reported racially motivated crime and violence have been noted all over the country. In the wider U.S. society, identifiable racial incidents have been estimated to have increased 55 percent from 1986 to 1987. According to the Community Relations Service (CRS), African Americans comprised two-thirds of the victims in the cases reported in 1987. Although this racial violence has taken various forms ranging from name-calling, vandalism, and cross-burning to actual physical assaults that result in casualties and death, these have not been isolated incidents but have their basis …

[Review Of] Jack Kugelmass, Ed. Between Two Worlds: Ethnographic Essays On American Jewry, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1990

[Review Of] Jack Kugelmass, Ed. Between Two Worlds: Ethnographic Essays On American Jewry, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume contains twelve varied, academically insightful, and often just plain entertaining chapters, along with the editor's lengthy and instructive introduction. Each chapter includes helpful explanatory footnotes, in-text translation of Hebrew and Yiddish terms, and abundant references to the large body of literature drawn upon by the individual authors. The book should not only be of interest and utility to students specializing in Jewish studies but also to those scholars analyzing the general processes of ethnicity in the United States. For the latter audience, a separate over-all glossary might have enhanced the volume beyond the translations within the text.

[Review Of] Paul Lauter, Et Ai, Eds. The Heath Anthology Of American Literature, Barbara Urrea Jan 1990

[Review Of] Paul Lauter, Et Ai, Eds. The Heath Anthology Of American Literature, Barbara Urrea

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

For years editors of standard American literature anthologies have presented undergraduates with a narrow view of the American literary experience. Their anthologies have reflected the predominant view of the academy, which has maintained a traditional literary canon denying the importance of works by women and ethnic authors. This denial has sparked controversy and gained national media attention, resulting in gradual changes in curricula at many universities, including Stanford. As the climate of the undergraduate classroom changes and reflects a wider vision, so must the anthologies used in the classroom. The recently published Heath Anthology of American Literature is just such …

[Review Of] James Officer. Hispanic Arizona, 1536-1856, Richard Griswold Del Castillo Jan 1990

[Review Of] James Officer. Hispanic Arizona, 1536-1856, Richard Griswold Del Castillo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

One of the glaring gaps in Southwestern historiography has been the lack of a modern scholarly interpretation of the Spanish and Mexican presence in Arizona. Hubert Howe Bancroft's History of the North Mexican States and Texas and John F. Bannon's The Spanish Borderlands Frontier, 1513-1821 have been the best sources for the study of pre-American Arizona, but these works treat the history of this region as a subtopic of a larger story. With the publication of Hispanic Arizona, scholars now have a thorough, detailed and scholarly study that is entirely devoted to the history of northern Sonora and southern Arizona.

[Review Of] Allen L. Woll And Randall M. Miller. Ethnic And Racial Images In American Film And Television: Historical Essays And Bibliography, Angela M. S. Nelson Jan 1990

[Review Of] Allen L. Woll And Randall M. Miller. Ethnic And Racial Images In American Film And Television: Historical Essays And Bibliography, Angela M. S. Nelson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Allen Woll and Randall Miller in Ethnic and Racial Images in American Film and Television have compiled in one volume the writings about the images of ethnic and racial groups in American television and film. Woll and Miller state in their Introduction that the purpose of their book was to "attempt to unite the work (the nature and importance of mass media stereotypes and their effects on society) from a wide variety of disciplines, languages and fields of study in order to expand the vistas of scholarly research in this area." Ethnic and Racial Images is divided into twelve chapters, …

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu Jan 1990

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

The major organizational principle of Northern Ewe song is one shared by numerous African, Oriental, and European musical traditions: a small number of models (variously described as "basic shapes," "archetypes," "background structures," "basic designs," "core patterns," "deep structures") is transformed in a wide variety of ways during performance. Variation takes place on different hierarchic levels both within and between songs and includes practically all of a song's dimensions (rhythm, interval, register, contour, harmony, and so on). This principle, although widely demonstrated in the literature on African song (see, among others, Jones 1976; Kauffman 1984; Schmidt 1984; and Erlmann 1985), is …

Youth Service: From Youth As Problems To Youth As Resources, Bonnie Benard Jan 1990

Youth Service: From Youth As Problems To Youth As Resources, Bonnie Benard

School K-12

New Paradigm "Youth as problems, or youth as resources? Communities with problems or communities with resources?" These opening sentences to Reaching Out. a recent book on establishing community service programs for youth, encapsulate a critical issue I see confronting anyone relating to or working with young people, whether as parents, teachers, community folk, or prevention advocates and other helping professionals: the framework or perspective from which we view youth in our society today. Whether we view youth as problems or as resources determines not only our expectations for our youth and our actions towards them, but also the type of …

La Construcción Colectiva Para Las Mujeres (The Women's Construction Collective): Edificando Para El Futuro, Ruth Mcleod Jan 1990

La Construcción Colectiva Para Las Mujeres (The Women's Construction Collective): Edificando Para El Futuro, Ruth Mcleod

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
