Distributive Effects Of Forest Service Attempts To Maintain Community Stability, Steven E. Daniels, William F. Hyde, David N. Wear Jan 1991

Distributive Effects Of Forest Service Attempts To Maintain Community Stability, Steven E. Daniels, William F. Hyde, David N. Wear

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Community stability is an objective of USDA Forest Service timber sales. This paper examines that objective, and the success the Forest Service can have in attaining it, through its intended maintenance of a constant volume timber harvest schedule. We apply a three-factor, two-sector modified general equilibrium model with empirical evidence from the timber-based counties of western Montana. Departure from a market responsive timber policy can have positive impacts on the wood products sector, but the net effects on the local community are very small. The costs to the public treasury of pursuing such a policy dwarf these small community benefits.

[Review Of] Philip Durham And Everett L. Jones. The Negro Cowboy, George H. Junne Jr. Jan 1991

[Review Of] Philip Durham And Everett L. Jones. The Negro Cowboy, George H. Junne Jr.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Except for books such as The Negro Cowboys, the African American West remains an enigma to most Americans. Popular media continue to perpetuate the stereotype of a white West, in spite of the fact that some of the earliest explorers accompanying the European invasion were of African descent. Beginning in 1501 with the Spanish conquest of Mexico, Africans were there. They were with Balboa when he "discovered" the Pacific, with Cortes in Mexico, with Cabeza de Vaca, Coronado, and others. Estevanico (Little Stephen) first explored New Mexico and Arizona.

[Review Of] Troy Duster. Backdoor To Eugenics, Steven J. Gold Jan 1991

[Review Of] Troy Duster. Backdoor To Eugenics, Steven J. Gold

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

During the first decades of this century, the theory of eugenics, which applied social Darwinism to human beings, was an influential movement. Its major contention was that Northern Europeans were genetically superior to other groups-Southern and Eastern Europeans, Asians, blacks and Jews. Therefore, the presence of these "inferior" groups in the U.S. should be limited, both by constraining the growth of their populations and by restricting their entry into the nation. Rooted in "science," eugenics was embraced by prominent intellectuals of the era, including Harvard psychologist William McDougall and University of Wisconsin sociologist E. A. Ross. The power of this …

Are You An Emissary Of Jesus Christ?: Justice, The Catholic Church And The Chicano Movement, Alberto L. Pulido

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In 1969, Católicos Por La Raza (CPLR) emerged as an ethnic "protest group" against the "injustices" of the American Catholic Church in San Diego and Los Angeles, California. CPLR was critical of the Catholic hierarchy's inconsistencies in relation to the Chicano community. As one of the wealthiest institutions, the Catholic Church was doing very little for a community that made up the largest part of the Church's membership. For CPLR, the Christian message of "justice" was not practiced by the leaders of the Church. In Los Angeles, Chicanos were asking why the Archdiocese chose to close a high school in …

[Review Of] Sheila K. Johnson. The Japanese Through American Eyes, Donald L. Guimary Jan 1991

[Review Of] Sheila K. Johnson. The Japanese Through American Eyes, Donald L. Guimary

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

For those interested in relations between Japan and the United States, this book is timely. It traces American stereotypes and attitudes about Japan from World War II to the later 1980s. The author, an anthropologist who has lived in that nation, uses examples of popular American culture -- books, magazines, films and public opinion poll results -- to trace attitudinal shifts in the U.S. She effectively uses illustrations and cartoons from magazines and newspapers -- New Yorker, Time, Playboy, and the New York Times -- to indicate how American opinions have ranged over this period.

Introduction: Ethnicity And Justice, Johnny Washington Jan 1991

Introduction: Ethnicity And Justice, Johnny Washington

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The ideal of social justice in the United States has its roots in both the Judeo-Christian and ancient Greek traditions. From the latter our notion of democracy as a just institution is derived. At the theoretical level, Plato attempted to define ideal justice in his Republic, but here we are not concerned with ideal justice. At the practical level, the Hebrew prophet Amos urged public officials to practice justice as enjoined by Moses and his predecessors. Some 2700 years later Martin Luther King, Jr., sought to combine these two senses of justice when he insisted that America can satisfy its …

Critique [Of Oral Traditions Under Threat: The Australian Aboriginal Experience By Christine Morris], Alan Spector Jan 1991

Critique [Of Oral Traditions Under Threat: The Australian Aboriginal Experience By Christine Morris], Alan Spector

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Christine Morris stimulates, provokes, and challenges some fundamental axioms about culture and literature in her intriguing essay. The absolutism of her position forces readers to critically examine their own ideas about the transmission and preservation of culture. Ultimately, I have some skepticism about the absolutism of her position, but her paper moved me several steps towards her position and caused me to evaluate my ideas on other issues as well.

Exploring Seniors Perceptions Of Crime: A Report Of A Social Survey Conducted In The City Of Nedlands, Diana Whyte, David Wiles, Tessa Tarrant

Research outputs pre 2011

In this exploratory survey we investigated the perceptions of, and fear of crime in elderly persons. Interviews were conducted with eighteen elderly residents of the City of Nedlands, an age-heterogeneous community which enjoys a high socio-economic status. Due to the small number of people interviewed the survey is qualitative in character but reflects the perceptions of a particular segment of metropolitan elderly persons. It was shown that the participants consider that there is mere crime, of a more serious and threatening nature, in present times than there was fifty years age. There was no indication of fear of becoming victims …

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems Jan 1991

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The City of Chicago recently embarked upon a pioneering effort to transform the quality of its public school system. The concept of decentralization that allows for neighborhood councils, greater decision-making at the local level, and increased parental involvement in the schools is not a new one. Similar governance structures of a century ago fell victim to class and ethnic factionalism. The progressive vision of a homogenous society assumed a passive clientele and a consensus culture. Particular educational programs brought diverse groups closer to the mainstream, but the resultant mass culture accommodated pluralistic values rather than the sought-after homogeneity.

Informal Education. Sociocultural Expression. And Symbolic Meaning In Popular Immigration Music Text, Jose Macias

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

One February morning as I noted the events of the primary school talent show, a sixth-grade boy belted out this song made popular in two countries by the Mexican rock group, Los Bukis. It was 1987, and I was doing fieldwork in a rural Mexican immigrant-sending community I call San Felipe, for an ethnography of families and their children who emigrated from Mexico to the United States[2]

[Review Of] Ellen Carol Dubois And Vicki L. Ruiz, Eds. Unequal Sisters: A Multicultural Reader In U. S. Women's History, Guadalupe Friaz

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Edited by Ellen C. DuBois and Vicki L. Ruiz, two respected historians, Unequal Sisters: A Multicultural Reader in U.S. Women's History is a welcome response to the call for a more complex approach to women's history. Central to this approach are the integration of women of color into women's history and a definition of community that reflects both conflict and concord.

[Review Of] Asian United Women Of California, Ed. Making Waves: An Anthology Of Writings By And About Asian American Women, Ann Rayson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Making Waves is an impressive collection of writings that includes poetry, fiction, and autobiography and historical, sociological, and political essays about American women who came from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, and Thailand. This is quite a feat. While non-Asians tend to stereotype Asians and lump them together, their cultures, traditions, and histories are diverse. Making Waves includes stories of Vietnamese boat refugees, Japanese picture brides, World War II camp detainees, Chinese prostitutes and grandmothers with bound feet, Filipinas looking to escape poverty by marrying American men through the Cherry Blossom network, and the list …

Man/Hombre/Homme: Respuestas A Las Necesidades De La Salud Reproductiva Masculina En América Latina, Debbie Rogow, Judith Bruce, Ann Leonard Jan 1991

Man/Hombre/Homme: Respuestas A Las Necesidades De La Salud Reproductiva Masculina En América Latina, Debbie Rogow, Judith Bruce, Ann Leonard

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Intimacy Outside Of The Natural Family: The Limits Of Privacy, Martha Albertson Fineman Jan 1991

Intimacy Outside Of The Natural Family: The Limits Of Privacy, Martha Albertson Fineman

Faculty Articles

In this paper I undertake a very pragmatic and focused consideration of whether it is possible to rework existing legal concepts of privacy in a way that would be ideologically compatible with dominant social norms in order to shield single mothers from excessive state regulation and supervision. I ultimately conclude that my desire to protect the decisionmaking autonomy and the dignity of poor and/or single mothers cannot be satisfied by resort to this area of law. At the constitutional level, this is so because notions of privacy are typically articulated as rights belonging to individuals, not family entities. And …

Preliminary Review Of Research In Service Learning, James Krug, Richard J. Kraft Jan 1991

Preliminary Review Of Research In Service Learning, James Krug, Richard J. Kraft

Special Topics, General

The following cursory review is taken from the Literature Review on Service Learning conducted by Mr. James Krug (1991) at the University of Colorado. Mr. Krug's research has been on the effects of service learning on four groups of high school young people: at-risk youth in a special program, student assistants (primarily minority) within the school, nature guides, and tutors at a primary school. Preliminary results indicate that, while all the experimental groups gained on measures of potency, activity involvement in the community, self-concept and other factors, the statistically significant growth at the .01 and .05 levels was found almost …

El Papel De Las Mujeres En La Conservación De Los Bosques Del Nepal, Augusta Molnar Jan 1991

El Papel De Las Mujeres En La Conservación De Los Bosques Del Nepal, Augusta Molnar

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
