Service-Learning As An Integrated Experience In K-5 Education: An Introduction To Resources And Information., Lisa J. Laplante, Carol Kinsley

School K-12

Some educators contend that students who engage in activities related to school subjects learn more efficiently and more effectively, and remember what they have learned much longer than students who do not. Service-Learning (S-L) can provide a central focus around which educational change can occur. Moreover, S-L enhances the ideas promoted by various circles of school reform. Theodore Sizer's nine principles and David Berliner's management of teaching are a few of the philosophies that provide the sound theoretic foundation for instituting S-L programs. Kate McPherson(1989) suggests S-L facilitates school reform while providing an expanded pedagogy to meet the learning styles …

Beyond Prevention Curricula: A Guide To Developing Alternative Activities Programs, U.S. Department Of Education

Curriculum

This guide is designed to help educators and youth workers better understand how programs of alternative activities can effectively be used to supplement school-based efforts to prevent alcohol and other drug use among youth, and to encourage schools to become more involved in program development and implementation. It seeks to clear up some of the confusion over what constitutes a program of alternative activities and what its goals should be, to improve understanding of the potential value of this approach, and to recommend promising strategies for improving the effectiveness of these activities in preventing and reducing use of alcohol and …

[Review Of] Clovis E. Semmes. Cultural Hegemony And African American Development, Carol Ward Jan 1994

[Review Of] Clovis E. Semmes. Cultural Hegemony And African American Development, Carol Ward

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The purpose of this book is to examine cultural aspects of hegemonic relations between White Americans and African Americans, a neglected topic which the author believes should provide the basis for African American Studies programs. Although Semmes establishes culture as the focus of his analysis, political and economic forces are clearly important for understanding the position of Black Americans in the changing social organization of the U.S. Defined as regularly in subjective states, culture is theorized as interacting with social organization, as institutional settings frame cultural expressions and vice versa.

[Review Of] Roger Goodman. Japan's International Youth: The Emergence Of A New Class Of Schoolchildren, Kumiko Takahara Jan 1994

[Review Of] Roger Goodman. Japan's International Youth: The Emergence Of A New Class Of Schoolchildren, Kumiko Takahara

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Japan's rapid expansion in the world of commerce since the 1960's has not only brought economic prosperity to the country but new social phenomena to its isolated monolithic culture. Roger Goodman's book focuses on just one such problem concerning "kikokusijo", or secondary schoolchildren returnees who resided abroad more than one year due to overseas assignments of their parents. The increase of returnee school children from 1,543 (1971) to 10,498 (1986) began to raise concerns in the mid-1970's with the Ministry of Education, mass media, and various public and business communities. The creation of remedial schools and special classes was hastened …

Early Marriage And Reproduction In Two Egyptian Villages, Laila El Hamamsy Jan 1994

Early Marriage And Reproduction In Two Egyptian Villages, Laila El Hamamsy

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

As noted in this monograph, marriage forms a central element of social life for Egyptians. Marriage in Egypt is nearly universal, and parents invest heavily to establish their children in married life. Once married, couples are faced with social pressures to begin childbearing immediately, a reflection of the high value placed on parenthood and children. But not all marriages begin with the same prospects for stability and satisfaction. This study draws attention to the problems faced by women who marry at very early ages in parts of rural Egypt. Despite a legal minimum age of 16, significant numbers of young …

Beyond The Civil Rights Agenda For Blacks: Principles For The Pursuit Of Economic And Community Development, James Jennings Jan 1994

Beyond The Civil Rights Agenda For Blacks: Principles For The Pursuit Of Economic And Community Development, James Jennings

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

Over the last several decades, this country has experimented with economic development and social welfare strategies and programs molded by liberals and conservatives, and embodied in the policies and politics of both Republicans and Democrats at the national level. However, given the continuing social and economic crisis, and gaps between African Americans and whites, it seems the approaches of both liberals and conservatives have been inadequate. Due to the failure of current policy strategies, in terms of black living conditions, debate in the black community should move from disagreements between liberals and conservatives, or Democrats and Republicans, towards the question …

Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard Jan 1994

Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Peretti's novels provide a clear statement of the worldview of conservative Christians who hold the Bible to be literally true and without error. Not only is the reader presented with doctrinal positions, but the implications of those positions for life in modern society are spelled out as well. In this essay, I analyze Peretti's views of the modern world, its heroes and villains, and argue they are representative of the views of the New Christian Right (Liebman and Wuthnow) in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

Introduction, Jennifer L. Pierce, Alberto L. Pulido

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

From the margins, we find ourselves well positioned to tell "other stories" -- life histories, traditions, and cultural myths which typically go unheard in dominant society.[2] As illustrated in the lead article, "A Pattern of Possibility: Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior, "by Thelma J. Shinn, such stories are "meronymic" -- mero from the Greek meaning "part" -- because our unique social location allows us to see beyond the dominant mythos and tell "other" parts of "the story." Telling these stories is not only empowering to those whom we name, but it also changes and transforms the official storyline itself. Life …

[Review Of] E. San Juan, Jr. Racial Formations/Critical Transformations: Articulations Of Power In Ethnic And Racial Studies In The United States, Jonathan A. Majak Jan 1994

[Review Of] E. San Juan, Jr. Racial Formations/Critical Transformations: Articulations Of Power In Ethnic And Racial Studies In The United States, Jonathan A. Majak

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Those who have read Racial Formation in the United States (1986) by Michael Omi and Howard Winant will find in E. San Juan, Jr.’s book an interesting, if not provocative, complement. Both books assert the centrality of race and racism in the social formation of the United States; however, Omi and Winant’s book is grounded in social science whereas San Juan, Jr.’s project is from a literary perspective.

Community-Based Aids Prevention And Care In Africa: Case Studies From Five African Countries, Ann Leonard Jan 1994

Community-Based Aids Prevention And Care In Africa: Case Studies From Five African Countries, Ann Leonard

HIV and AIDS

The Population Council carried out a three-year project entitled “Community-Based AIDS Prevention and Care in Africa: Building on Local Initiatives.” Given the constraints faced by the health care infrastructure in responding to the AIDS crisis and the limitations of traditional educational approaches in motivating people to modify their sexual behavior, in the African context community-based AIDS prevention and care of those affected are the first line of defense against the infection. This project was developed to explore efforts by organizations in Africa dealing directly with the consequences of AIDS, to understand the essential components of effective community-based efforts for AIDS …

The Myth Of The "Battered Husband Syndrome", Jack C. Straton Jan 1994

The Myth Of The "Battered Husband Syndrome", Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The most recurrent backlash against women's safety is the myth that men are battered as often as women. Suzanne Steinmetz created this myth with her 1977 study of 57 couples, in which four wives were seriously beaten but no husbands were beaten. By a convoluted thought process she concluded that her finding of zero battered husbands implied that men just don't report abuse and therefore 250,000 American husbands are battered each year by their wives, a figure that exploded to 12 million in the subsequent media feeding frenzy.

Men have never before been shy in making their needs known, so …

An Investigation Of Affirmative Action Policies And Practices Of Recruiting, Hiring, Mentoring And Retention Of African American Teachers And Administrators, U. S. Davidson Jr. Jan 1994

An Investigation Of Affirmative Action Policies And Practices Of Recruiting, Hiring, Mentoring And Retention Of African American Teachers And Administrators, U. S. Davidson Jr.

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the affirmative action policies and practices of recruiting, hiring, mentoring and retention of African American teachers and administrators throughout the State of Illinois. Since public elementary and secondary school systems provide numerous and varied jobs in virtually every community in the nation, it is assumed that if a quality education is to be attained, students must be exposed to the variety of cultural perspectives that represent the nation at large (American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, 1990).

This study examined policies and practices of districts throughout the State of Illinois inquiring …

Journal Of The Community Development Society Vol. 25, No. 02, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

For more than twenty-five years, the journal of the Community Development Society has disseminated information on the theory, research, and practice of community development. Biannual publications have contained the most relevant materials that add to our knowledge of community development. While much of the material in the Journal articles has been derived from generally accepted principles, concepts, or practices of community development, from time to time a few of the articles may have attempted to dramatically extend current thinking. We learn by challenging what has been accepted. For generations the social sciences have advanced using some modification of this learning …

Midlife Experience Of Contemporary Women Views Along The Midway, Paula Deangelis Panchuck Jan 1994

Midlife Experience Of Contemporary Women Views Along The Midway, Paula Deangelis Panchuck

Educational Studies Dissertations

Examines the experience of midlife and the expectations of midlife and aging of 22 Caucasian, African American, Latina, Chinese, and Asian-Indian midlife women, ages 40 to 60, who differ in sexual orientation, income, employment, marital and parenting status. Influenced by social and family expectations for women in their early years, most women expected midlife would include husband, home and family. The women describe midlife as positive and fulfilling, disclaim the relevance of "midlife crisis" to their lives and report higher levels of self-confidence, self-reliance and self-understanding. Tempered by an awareness of imperfect circumstances in their lives and compassion for their …

The Effect Of Community Service Work On The Moral Development Of College Ethics Students., Judith A. Boss Jan 1994

The Effect Of Community Service Work On The Moral Development Of College Ethics Students., Judith A. Boss

Higher Education

A study designed to test the effect of community service work on college ethics students found that community service work along with discussion of relevant moral issues is an effective means of moving students into the post-conventional stage of principled moral reasoning, as measured by Rest's Defining Issues Test. Other benefits of community service work are also discussed in the paper.
