An Alternative Approach To Second Language Teaching, Carol Yorkievitz Jan 1970

An Alternative Approach To Second Language Teaching, Carol Yorkievitz

Honors Papers

Language, as a universal human trait, is so second-nature to mankind, that its subtleties in interaction have often been taken as a matter of course. Deeply ingrained folklore about language has existed from the days of the ancients and persists into so-called ‘rational’ modern civilization. The affect associated with language and its role in distinguishing in- and out- groups can be annotated by historical reference; for example, the ancient Greeks used the word ‘baba’ to describe the babblings of those unfortunates not gifted with the gods’ own Greek tongue - hence the origin of the word ‘barbarian’. The supposed magical …

The Effect Of Nursery School Experience Upon Readiness Of Children In Kindergarten, Glenna C. Boyce May 1969

The Effect Of Nursery School Experience Upon Readiness Of Children In Kindergarten, Glenna C. Boyce

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Metropolitan Readiness Test, 1964 edition, Form A, was administered to forty children who were enrolled in kindergarten classes in Logan, Utah, during the school year 1967-1968. Twenty of these children (nursery attenders) had attended the Utah State University Child Development Laboratory for at least two, but not more than three quarters with at least half of this nursery experience being during the year preceding kindergarten. The other 20 children (non-attenders) had not experienced any type of pre-school or day care program prior to kindergarten. The two groups were matched by pairs on age, sex, kindergarten teacher and socio-economic level …

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill Jan 1968

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.

With this purpose in mind -- to inquire intensively …

The Vanguard (Vol. 14, No. 5), Jul-Aug 1967, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Some forty-five professional church workers visited Holy Family Lutheran Church (ALC) last summer to hear Pastor Fred Downing speak of his ministry there. Describing his heavily populated north side Chicago neighborhood, he told of the tensions that might rupture into riot at any moment. He alluded to manifest resentment and hostility by black towards white. He spoke of increased evidence of "soul brother" signs in the windows of small Negro-owned businesses.

Concept Of Unity Among Indian Tribes Of Maine, New Hampshire And New Brunswick, Andrea Jeanne Bear May 1966

Concept Of Unity Among Indian Tribes Of Maine, New Hampshire And New Brunswick, Andrea Jeanne Bear

Senior Scholar Papers

The purpose in writing this ethnohistory was not to prove that the tribes in Maine, New Hampshire and New Brunswick were unified, but rather, to illustrate the extent to which they were unified. With this general end in mind, my research therefore could not follow only one line of inquiry. It had to be divided into various sub-topics to cover my various orientations to the problem. One of my first orientations was that of validating my belief in a former unity through fieldwork among the Indians involved. This orientation provided the basis for my first chapter, which was considerably augmented …

05 Holau, The Voyage Of Mr. Boe, Mark Etua, Pita Sharples, Priscilla Taulupo, Bill Donner

Sikaiana Oral Stories

This is the story of the last (or one of the last) voyages (holau) from Sikaiana. It was recorded by Mark Etua as part of linguistic research done by Peter Sharples among the Sikaiana. The transcription into the Sikaiana language was done by Priscilla Taulupo and the rough translation by Bill Donner (sorry for any errors).

Traditionally, Sikaiana people were master voyagers, capable of traveling hundreds of kilometers. This voyage was probably conducted in the 1920s by a trader for Lever Brothers in his dinghy when he was short of supplies. He had several Sikaiana people help, including …

04 Taupule, A Woman From Tuvalu, Johnson Siota, Pita Sharples Dr, Priscilla Taulupo, Bill Donner

Sikaiana Oral Stories

This recording was made by Johnson Siota was part of linguistic research conducted by Dr. Pita Sharples among the Sikaiana people of the Solomon Islands n the 1960s. The transcription in Sikaiana is by Priscilla Taulupo and the rough translation is by Bill Donner. The story of Taupule was well known to Sikaiana people during my stays in the 1980s on Sikaiana. She came from the Tuvalu and was dropped off on Sikaiana by a trader during her pregnancy, sometime in the late 1800s. She warned traders that life would change from contact with Europeans. her descendants felt a certain …

Social Distance Attitudes Of College Students Toward Three Minority Groups, Dennison W. Nichols Jun 1965

Social Distance Attitudes Of College Students Toward Three Minority Groups, Dennison W. Nichols

Masters Theses

Introduction

This study is an endeavor to add to the already existing scientific information in regard to man's social relations with his fellow men. More exactly, the purposes of this research are: (1) to gain a better understanding of prejudice among college students toward both stereotype images and "real" described persons belonging to the Jewish minority, the Negro minority and the homosexual minority, (2) to explore the possibility of their being a relationship between social-distance attitudes of these students toward these minorities and the personal, economic and certain other factors influencing these students, and (3) to consider the significance of …

A Cephalometric Comparison Of The Chamula, Mayo And Navajo Indians, Norman C. Bunker May 1965

A Cephalometric Comparison Of The Chamula, Mayo And Navajo Indians, Norman C. Bunker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Lateral head x-rays were obtained on selected samples of 24 Chamula, 29 Mayo and 39 Navajo Indians for cephalometric comparison.

Cephalometric evaluation was carried out by means of the Bjork analysis. Mean values for each of the Indian groups were determined and compared with each other and with the mean values of a group of Swedish conscripts studied by Bjork. The mean values were statistically analyzed and and subjected to the Student's "t" test to determine the significant levels of differences.

Results revealed that in comparing the three Indian groups significant differences do appear. They are few and general concordance …

Books For Children, J A F Lawson Jan 1965

Books For Children, J A F Lawson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

F we think of a child entirely without books we think of him as very definitely deprived.

Why is that so? Why do we consider books to be a vital part of a child's life? In fact, why do children need books?

Integration And Consensus: A Tentative Exploration, Kent Warren Smith Jan 1964

Integration And Consensus: A Tentative Exploration, Kent Warren Smith

Honors Papers

The dimensions of the topic at hand are of a scope known on occasion to induce giddiness of mind and delusions of omniscience among those who treat with such words as consensus and "integration." Let us be warned; recognition of danger is the first stage of wisdom. It is necessary to severely limit our purview and to temper our aspirations. Established knowledge in this complex and elusive area of concern is scanty. Firm data are perhaps lass conspicuous than firm opinions. Ideological convictions often are easier to come by than precise and valid evidence. The immediate moral is to expect …
