Two Cheers For Pornography, Steven Sanders
Two Cheers For Pornography, Steven Sanders
Bridgewater Review
The existence of pornography from the earliest times and in virtually every culture attests to a remarkable universality and persistence. Of course, popularity is no proof of legitimacy. How, if at all, can pornography be justified? This question has no easy answer. Indeed, if one may judge from the controversy, consensus is far from being reached on the question of pornography. I shall suggest some things that can be said in favor of pornography, though I am by no means giving my unqualified endorsement - hence, only two cheers for pornography. Naturally, I expect some readers to disagree with me, …
A Case Against Animal Rights, Jan Narveson
A Case Against Animal Rights, Jan Narveson
Animal Welfare Collection
Down through the past decade and more, no philosophical writer has taken a greater interest in the issues of how we ought to act in relation to animals, nor pressed more strongly the case for according them rights, than has Tom Regan, in many articles, reviews, and exchanges at scholarly conferences and in print. It is a pleasure to join him on this symposium, to explore this interesting and important set of issues.
I shall begin by outlining, as fairly as I can, Regan's view of the matter, and then sketch my alternative. Regan has in fact criticized certain aspects …

The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners, Jesse M. Vazquez
The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Most human services practitioners at one time or another must confront cultural issues which in many ways have a direct impact on their role and effectiveness as helping professionals. This article links the phenomenon of ethnic identity to problems, practices, and policies encountered in the field of human services. Although most of the theoretical concepts presented here are related to counseling psychology and education, other practitioners with culturally diverse client populations will also find the information applicable to their work. The social scientist, teacher and researcher, who is often the disseminator of theoretical and methodological paradigms, should also find these …
[Review Of] Ethnic Studies Oral History Project And United Okinawan Association Of Hawaii, Eds. Uchinanchu: A History Of Okinawans In Hawaii, Russell Endo
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
While the experiences of most ethnic groups are frequently overlooked, this is especially the fate of relatively small groups. Many small groups merit greater attention, for example the Okinawans who migrated to Hawaii from 1900-1924, worked on sugar and pineapple plantations, developed small businesses and community organizations, and achieved a measure of economic and social success. What makes their story of special interest is their ethnic status. At the time of their migration, the homeland of the Okinawans, the Ryukyu archipelago (which includes the island of Okinawa), was part of Japan as it is today. However, the Ryukyus have always …

[Review Of] Michi Kodama-Nishimoto, Et Al. Hanahana, An Oral History Anthology Of Hawaii's Working People, Russell Endo
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Oral history is unquestionably an important method for recovering the history of ethnic groups, particularly of ethnic working people who leave few written accounts of their own and whose lives are often ignored or else inadequately described by outsiders because of their apparent routineness and unimportance. Unfortunately, many oral history materials remain unknown and unused except by occasional researchers. In 1976, the Hawaii State Legislature established the Oral History Project (OHP, formerly the Ethnic Studies Oral History Project) at the University of Hawaii to record the recollections of ethnic working men and women. Since then, OHP has interviewed over 250 …
Critique [Of Self-Evaluation Of Black And White College Students By Keith D. Parker], Homer D.C. Garcia
Critique [Of Self-Evaluation Of Black And White College Students By Keith D. Parker], Homer D.C. Garcia
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The article by Keith D. Parker raises interesting theoretical and methodological questions, but this review focuses on the latter. The author is correct in his critical assessment of black self-esteem research (BSER) methodology. Projective measures have been used in most cases and questions have been raised regarding the validity of such self-esteem measures and therefore about the believability of BSER findings.[1] In addition, blacks and whites tested have not been representative of the general black or white communities of the United States, yet inferences to and comparisons of the populations have been made. Finally, studies have employed non-multivariate statistical techniques …

[Review Of] Michael P. Johnson And James P. Roark, Eds. No Chariot Let Down: Charleston's Free People Of Color On The Eve Of The Civil War, Orville W. Taylor
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In an overgrown cemetery in the old village of Stateburg, South Carolina, a hundred miles north of Charleston lies the body of William Ellison (1790-1860), patriarch of a remarkable clan of free blacks whose achievements belie the myth of the Old South as a society of wealthy white masters and poor black slaves. Born a slave and perhaps the son of his master, Ellison early learned to make cotton gins and at age twentysix purchased his freedom and went into business in Stateburg. Riding the crest of the cotton boom, in 1835 he bought the handsome home of former governor …

[Review Of] C. Kamarae, M. Schultz, And W.M. O'Barr, Eds. Language And Power, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In recent years, educators concerned with issues of access and equity have supported a variety of bilingual educational delivery systems. Similarly, feminists seeking representation and recognition have advocated inclusive language and nonsexist job titles. From these and other arenas, the relationship of language and power has surfaced as an issue of national importance. In this timely collection of essays, Kamarae and her associates have legitimated and extended the discussion.

[Review Of] Beverley Ormerod. An Introduction To The French Caribbean Novel, Charlotte H. Bruner
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Beverley Ormerod displays real expertise in An Introduction to the French Caribbean Novel. She is a West Indian herself, and she knows the background and culture of the Caribbean: its African slave origins and the present quest for pan-Caribbean identity. After post-graduate research at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris , she earned her doctorate in French at Cambridge University. When necessary, she translates the French originals into English. She also knows various creoles of the islands and appreciates the linguistic variety there. She has taught Caribbean literature for twenty years.

Extra-Legal Factors In The American Legal System, Peter W. Mayer
Extra-Legal Factors In The American Legal System, Peter W. Mayer
Honors Papers
The laws of the United States have been written over time with the intention of providing a framework for fair, legitimate, and uniform legal decisions to be made. Laws attempt to provide national tranquility by providing channels of punishment for those who disobey them. At the same time laws in the United States attempt to avoid any conflict with differing cultural values present in our nation. The laws of the United States are intended to function without regard to the race, sex, or religion of the defendant, complainant, or attorneys involved. Laws themselves cannot help but embody the cultural values …
Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan
Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
These words, spoken at the beginning of each televised "Star Trek" episode, set the stage for the fantastic future. Although the "Star Trek" series was cancelled in 1969 after only three years of production, it generated a large cult following that flourishes still today. One reason for the series' remarkable longevity is its depiction of the future as a Freudian fantasy. This Freudian vision draws on cultural myths embedded in the patriarchal dominance of men over women characteristic of Western civilization.
According to Freud, both sexes are driven by three instincts --- sex, aggression, and the death wish---but men have …
Clinical Sociology And Preventing Nuclear War, Louis Kriesberg
Clinical Sociology And Preventing Nuclear War, Louis Kriesberg
Clinical Sociology Review
This paper outlines major kinds of social science research, especially sociological, that have relevance for nuclear war prevention and that would be relevant to a variety of clients. Research that has been done as well as work that could be done to help prevent nuclear war are noted. The research topics are related to policy suggestions about lessening the risks of nuclear war. The emphasis is on research relevant to a wide range of US clients and who are not operating in a very short time frame.

Dropping Out Of High School: An Inside Look, Michelle Fine
Publications and Research
In September, 1984, I began an ethnography of student life in and out of a New York City public high school to figure out why urban students drop out of high school at such extraordinary rates. By December, why urban students stay in high school through graduation struck me as an equally compelling question.

Humanistic Criminology: Roots From Peter Kropotkin, Larry L. Tifft, Lois E. Stevenson
Humanistic Criminology: Roots From Peter Kropotkin, Larry L. Tifft, Lois E. Stevenson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Kropotkin's extensive writings on criminological issues have been almost totally neglected. Through critical historical and macro-structural analyses Kropotkin assessed institutional arrangements disclosing how they were or were not meeting human needs. Our exploration focuses on Kropotkin's theoretical contributions, his feelings-based criminology and his extremely insightful dualistic conceptualization of "human nature". His contributions to penology, and his assessment of social arrangements which would meet the complex and ever-changing needs of humankind are briefly examined. Kropotkin's analytic framework provides an insightful and provocative base from which to synthesize criminological thought and research and from which to take action to alter social arrangements …
The Gospel And Feminism: A Proposal For Lutheran Dogmatics, Lois E. Malcolm
The Gospel And Feminism: A Proposal For Lutheran Dogmatics, Lois E. Malcolm
Faculty Publications
The aim of this essay is to identify the theological, and deeply Christian, point of resonance between Lutheran and feminist theologies. It begins with a brief overview of themes in Christian feminist theologies; it then offers rationale and recommendations for why and how Lutheran dogmatics should critically engage feminist perspectives so that it can better serve the task of assisting Christians in their proclamation of the promise in Jesus’ gospel.
The Cross-Channel Migration Of Irish Travellers, George Gmelch, Sharon Gmelch
The Cross-Channel Migration Of Irish Travellers, George Gmelch, Sharon Gmelch
Sociology
Until the late 1950s, Irish Travellers lived primarily in rural areas and travelled within relatively confined areas. With the urbanisation of the last quarter century, their traditional sources of income have dried up and they have had to adjust to very different circumstances. Emigration, whether temporary or permament, to Britain was one means oof adaptation. Plentiful opportunities for unskilled labour and generous welfare benefits were the main attraction. More recently, however, Ireland has become more attractive; in particular, Irish welfare benefits are now almost on a par with those in Britain.
Chapter V: Danish Religious Life In Chicago -- Trinity Church
Chapter V: Danish Religious Life In Chicago -- Trinity Church
The Bridge
When the Danes came to America, the Church of Denmark did not follow on their heels. The Danish Church believed that most Danish emigrants were dissenters, not supporters of the established Lutheran church. The Church viewed Danish immigration as too small to support churches, even in a city as large as Chicago. The few Danes in America might join Norwegian congregations, thereby maintaining ties with a similar form of Lutheranism. 1 The problem of not having churches to attend was somewhat unusual among immigrants. Catholic groups were welcomed by the international Catholic Church, wherever they settled. Such Protestants as the …
[Review Of] Paul G. Zolbrod. Dine Bahane' : The Navajo Creation Story, Kathleen Danker
[Review Of] Paul G. Zolbrod. Dine Bahane' : The Navajo Creation Story, Kathleen Danker
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Paul G. Zolbrod's Dine Bahane': The Navajo Creation Story is a revision of Washington Matthews' "The Navaho Origin Legend" published in Navaho Legends (Boston: American Folklore Society) in 1897. Zolbrod justly describes Matthews' version of this narative [narrative] as "one of the world's significant literary works," and his rewriting of it makes it accessible as never before to English speaking readers. The narrative is essentially sacred in nature, dealing with the emergence of precursors to human beings through successive primal worlds and with male and female deities who must achieve harmony, peace, and balance between themselves and throughout the world …
Racism And The Canadian State, Daiva K. Stasiulis
Racism And The Canadian State, Daiva K. Stasiulis
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The practices and official discourse of a variety of state institutions in Canada have reflected a new level of "race consciousness" during the past five years. A notable development within the Canadian state has been the emergence at all levels of administrative and parliamentary institutions of new "race relations " and "visible minority" committees, liaison and consultative structures, programs, and commissions. Following a series of racially-motivated attacks within Toronto subways directed principally at South Asians, the Metropolitan Toronto Police and the Toronto Transit Commission jointly established a system designed to intercept attackers and prevent further incidents. A growing number of …
