Community Service For Elderly People In Riverside City, Libia Correa De Camacho Jun 1973

Community Service For Elderly People In Riverside City, Libia Correa De Camacho

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There is an increasing concern for providing services for elderly people, and most communities in the United States offer a wide variety of them. Inadequate planning and little evaluation are common problems in the services offered by many communities.

The main objectives of this study were to assess the kind of services available for elderly people in the city of Riverside, second, to make observations on the relations existing among the agencies delivering those services, and third, to make an evaluation of those services based on the information supplied by the agencies themselves.

This was intended be descriptive research, and …

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett Jun 1973

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although neglected by historians Julia Ward Howe contributed much more to American civilization than the words of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." She was one of the founders of women's clubs and a prominent member of the women suffrage movement. At the turn of the century, Mrs. Howe was nearly a household name. She was eulogized at her death in 1910 as "the most distinguished woman in America." Mrs. Howe was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a distinction not shared by another woman until 1930.

Several biographies have been written on the …

Growth Of Transcendental Meditation: A Sociological Study, Jonathan Lewis Miller May 1973

Growth Of Transcendental Meditation: A Sociological Study, Jonathan Lewis Miller

Senior Scholar Papers

Sociology, in concerning itself with methodology and cultural determinism, may have overlooked the value of human experience in determining social action. We feel that the structural-functionalist point of view is not mutually exclusive with that of symbolic interaction theory. The field of collective behavior has not adequately explained a certain incidence of human activity called Transcendental Meditation. This paper will define Transcendental Meditation in sociological terms and explore its growth in terms of structural-functionalism,as well as in terms of the symbol-making faculty of human experience.

In the first chapter, the author will state his

biases and background as well as the …

Labor Force Projections For The State Of Utah, 1970-2000, Craig R. Lundahl May 1973

Labor Force Projections For The State Of Utah, 1970-2000, Craig R. Lundahl

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study deals with labor force projections for the State of Utah, counties and multi-county areas, by age and sex for the years 1980, 1990, and 2000, using the technique of cohort analysis for long-range labor force projections. The study also examines some social and economic implications of labor force projections for Utah.

The labor force projections were derived from the age and sex population projections being prepared for the State of Utah and Utah counties by Yun Kim and Therel R. Black, Utah State University.

In order to project the future labor force of Utah, an analysis of historic …

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler May 1973

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler

Dissertations and Theses

While men do indeed construct self-validating and often peculiar interpretations of the realities of their world the simple fact that these views become consensually shared doctrines of experience does not protect them from the revisionism of historical scrutiny. These perceptions of the world become retrospectively altered as developing bodies of knowledge reject them as being clearly deceptive or anachronistic. The concept of psychopathology, distinguished historically under many rubrics, has not been immune to these same processes of modification, nor has it ever been free of the diverse irrationalities which men of all ages have constructed to explain the etiology and …

Net Migration As A Factor Affecting Metropolitan Growth In Utah: 1950 To 1970, Kooros M. Mahmoudi May 1973

Net Migration As A Factor Affecting Metropolitan Growth In Utah: 1950 To 1970, Kooros M. Mahmoudi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objectives of this study were to measure net in- or out-migration to or from the Standard Metropolitan Areas of Utah between 1950-60 and 1960-70, and to study selected socio-economic factors relating to migration and the growth of SMSA's. Specifically, the factors of migration and natural population increase were central in an analysis of population redistribution. Selected demographic characteristics of the migrants such as sex and age were also studied to establish their impact upon the SMSA population structure. The relationship between population change in the SMSA's and economic factors of labor force supply and employment were also reviewed.

Gains In Reading Performances By Urban Job Corpsmen, Jess F. Veasey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem to be investigated in this study was to examine the association between the educational training program of an Urban Job Corps Center and the reading performances of trainees from disadvantaged backgrounds.

A sample of 100 trainees was randomly selected to represent the total population of Job Corpsmen in an urban center. The Job Corps Center in Clearfield, Utah, was the initial site in this study. The sample selected from the Job Corps was from four racial-ethnic groups: Blacks, Puerto Ricans, Whites, and Mexican-Americans. Each trainee was given a reading test upon arrival and another test six months after …

The Dynamics Of Social Systems, Susan Jane Albery '73

Honors Projects

My intent is to explain the "how" of this framework, not in extensively difficult terms, but as I understand its application. Since I am blessed with very little mathematical bent, acceptance of the part of this which relies on a computer, was for me, a leap of faith. This was not a major problem for me, as I am convinced of the feasability and applicability of this particular mode of study. I ask you to appreciate this acceptance and proceed with me from this point, believing that understanding the innermost technical workings of this method is not integral to understanding …

The Mental Patient As Machiavellian: An Exploratory Study, Louise B. Leader Apr 1973

The Mental Patient As Machiavellian: An Exploratory Study, Louise B. Leader

Masters Theses

A basic question in the study of mental illness has been whether mental patients were victims of society or manipulators of their own careers. Four hypotheses were developed to investigate the manipulative aspect of this question. Patients were selected from three different mental institutions: a state hospital, a Veteran's Administration Hospital, and a private church-related hospital. The patients' records and a group-administered battery of test instruments provided the data used to test the hypotheses. Only one of the hypotheses was supported and the basic question remained unanswered. Lack of support for the remaining three hypotheses was not seen as conclusive …

The Doctor-Patient Relationship Revisited. An Analysis Of The Placebo Effect., Herbert M. Adler, Md, Van B. Hammett. Md

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

An overview of prescientific medicine, evolution, and individual human development is presented in an attempt to discover the generic factors operating in all interpersonal therapies. We hypothesize that the placebo effect rests on the universal human need for a group and, by symbolic extension, a system.
