Sexism In Special Education, Patricia H. Gillespie, Albert H. Fink
Sexism In Special Education, Patricia H. Gillespie, Albert H. Fink
IUSTITIA
The educational establishment is now reflecting the concerns of womanhood. Grudgingly, and even painfully, it seems to some, the large and complicated system of formal education acknowledges the existence of practices which are sexist both in conception and operation. At one level this sexism is directed, at many levels of awareness, toward the functionaries of the system. The economic oppression of teachers, who are mostly female, is an obvious expression of the phenomenon. Another benchmark is the limited career development opportunities available to women as educational managers and academics.
At yet another level, not the less dangerous for being more …
Feminism And The Legalization Of Prostitution: How Far Down The River?, Marilyn C. Zilli
Feminism And The Legalization Of Prostitution: How Far Down The River?, Marilyn C. Zilli
IUSTITIA
One of the most telling issues on the state of the women's movement today is that of the legalization of prostitution. It would be inappropriate to say that the issue has caused a breach in the ranks: the term is inapplicable to a movement which has never claimed coherency and which has, in fact, consistently demonstrated an inability to reconcile the views of its various factions. The prostitution issue is important, rather, precisely because it underscores these differences of analysis and tactics which have appeared in other areas and the splits between white middle class liberal women, radical feminists, marxist …

The Impact Of Directly Mailed Family Planning Materials To Afdc Welfare Mothers, Paul J. Placek
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
Communications research has repeatedly documented the fact that people are affected by the various forms of mass media, and so family planning programs have begun to use television (Hutchinson, 1970), radio, movies, posters, telephones (Dabbs and Neiger, 1970), newspapers, and various combinations of these media (Clark and Morris, 1972; Chase, 1972; Balakrishnan, 1967; Takeshita, 1966; Cernada and Lu, 1972) in transmitting the message of family planning. Our present media focus, however, involves direct mailing, which in contrast to other media, often has the advantages of being sent by an authoritative or prestigious source, is relatively …
Ethnicity, Professionalism, And Black Paternalism: Implications For Social Welfare Services, Robert S. Bartlett
Ethnicity, Professionalism, And Black Paternalism: Implications For Social Welfare Services, Robert S. Bartlett
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
The assumption around the use of nonprofessionals as members of the agency team suggest that the "bridge" function is enhanced when the new worker and the client-system are similar in such factors as ethnicity, class, cultural background, religion, and so on. Data from a 1968 survey tested Grosser's hypothesis: "that staff similarity with the client in ethnicity...will result in greater accuracy regarding the client and his community (1966:60)". Grosser's hypothesis was tested at a black staffed community action agency, serving a black ghetto in a large metropolitan city in the northeastern section of the United …

Excerpt from the full-text article:
There appears to be a battle that heretofore has been a brushfire incursion, but what may now have the possibility of becoming something more involved. This is the raging debate between "traditional" scholars and those now committed to off-campus or experiential learning. Historically, there has always been disagreement over what constituted learning or how to evaluate what was learned. Now the area of disparagement appears to be over the legitimacy of off-campus experiences as learning and, secondly, how to evaluate these experiences as academic enterprises. As always seems to be the case in debates such …

Pandora's Box: The Liberation Of Welfare Mothers, Bonnie Morel Edington
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
The non-"misandrist" mainstream of the women's movement has suggested that, more than women being liberated from male oppression, both sexes need to be liberated from the tyranny of culturally determined sex roles, the last bastion of ascribed status. If all social roles were androgynous they could be based on more relevant criteria. For example, children would be encouraged to develop skills and talents without regard for their "appropriateness" to gender, the male-female ratio in the work force and in nearly all specific occupations would be virtually equal, pay would be equal, and the number of …
Interaction Patterns In The Campground, Dennis Lee Rockwood
Interaction Patterns In The Campground, Dennis Lee Rockwood
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this project was to examine interaction patterns in various campground settings and to elaborate on camping literature which has suggested that the campground is a social event with high rates of interaction. In exploring this phenomenon, this report utilized observational techniques to document the temporal, spatial, familiarity, numerical, and behavioral dimensions of the observed interactions.
The data suggested that young adults and middle-aged persons were observed to be involved in, and initiated the highest proportions of, interactions. In general, males displayed far greater proportions of initiations than females. The highly developed campground exhibited higher proportions and rates …

Knowledge And Use Of Social Services In Gervais, Oregon, Elizabeth Lewis, Abby Maier, Lajuana J. Morton
Dissertations and Theses
During first year field placement, we worked with a number of rural families, most of them Mexican-American. It seemed to us that rural families in general and Mexican-Americans in particular were not being very well served by social service agencies. We questioned whether this might be due to a lack of Mexican-American perspective in traditional services or perhaps a lack of Mexican-American manpower or at least Spanish-speaking manpower.
This study, then, developed out of a general area of interest that can be stated as three questions: (1) Do rural people (especially Mexican-Americans) feel there is a need for various social …

Toward A Theoretical Understanding Of Ethnic Antagonism: The Case Of The Foreign Workers In Switzerland, Isidor Wallimann
Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Omaha's Changing Profile."
In cooperation with the Economic Development Council of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Center in 1973, initiated a program of providing up-to-date economic and demographic data on Omaha.1
During the initial year, data were developed on population, employment, income, housing, retail sales and real estate values and taxes. The results of the year-long research has been produced as "Omaha's Changing Profile" {33 minute color slide presentation). In "Omaha's Changing Profile" the city was divided into six geographical subareas as depicted on Map 1. The delineations allow …
Christian Responsibility And Community Process, Joseph A. Grau
Christian Responsibility And Community Process, Joseph A. Grau
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Few thoughtful Christians deny that as Christians they should be doing something about the social problems of our time. But, they are often not sure as to the right way of going about it. When they come to grips with the meaning of their responsibilities as Christians in the world, they are struck by the complexity of a vast network of interlocking problems, and the strong differences of opinion among people of good will about how to unravel an apparently hopeless tangle of social, political, economic, and cultural affairs. Consequently, it is not enough to say, "Follow your conscience, and …

Judge Nichol, who presided at the Wounded Knee trial ~ St. Paul, has also worked with the American Legion serving as chairman of its Americanism Committee. He could be considered a conservative man. According to some who were present at the trial, he spoke good words about the FBI participation in the trial calling it the finest agency of its kind in the world. Eight and one-half months and hours of testimony later, the judge spoke other words, giving a scalding assessment of what he had witnessed, concluding, "This has been a bad year for justice."

On March II and I2, I974, a citizen's panel assembled in Harlan County, Ky., to investigate conditions surrounding the then eight month old coal miner's strike against Duke Power Company's Brookside Mine in Harlan. The panel heard testimony from more than fifty witnesses on the issues involved in the strike, and went on an inspection tour of the Brookside Coal Camp.

The building of new communities was the major emphasis for the LHRAA Institute on Human Relations, held during the last weekend in July on the campus of Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind.
Institute participants worked together on techniques and procedures for cultivating Christian communities. Within such communities, issues of local concern can be assessed, resources evaluated, and decisions made about the kind of action which would most effectively address the problems.

The statement was made by Bishop Leonard N. Auala of Namibia's Ovambokavango Lutheran Church, head of the African church and a leader in the struggle against apartheid policies imposed on South-West Africa. South Africa continues to control the territory despite the removal of the administrative mandate by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, the UN-established council, in 1967, to govern the area until independence, and a 1971 ruling by the International Court of Justice that South Africa give up Namibia.

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.
