The Vanguard (Vol. 28, No. 4), May 1981, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Lutheran individuals and organizations have joined the thousands of other. civic and religious leaders in expressing dismay at the deaths of 26 black young people in Atlanta.

In early April, the standing committee of the Lutheran Council's Division for Mission and Ministry issued a statement urging Lutheran congregations to "increase their efforts for an end of racial violence in their communities, states, and the nation."

The Vanguard

Repeating an action of two years ago, the Missouri Synod board of directors, meeting the last weekend in February, resolved to notify the Lutheran Council that the synod will discontinue its support of the Council's Indian desk and withdraw its participation from the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) as of March 1982.

In taking this action, the board "approved in principle" the recommendations of the synod's Board of Missions-recommendations based on a report of the synod's American Indian Advisory Council (

"There is some relief that Secretary of Interior James Watt promised to honor the commitment made by Ronald Reagan to respect self-determination and tribal sovereignity. It is a matter of record from his confirmation hearings that as Secretary of Interior, he will uphold the trust responsibility the federal government has with American Indians. This is encouraging."

That's the assessment of Eugene Crawford, director of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) as he looks forward to the operations of the Bureau of Indian Affairs under the Department of Interior.

"There's a need to break the isolation of the students on campus."

Citing that goal, Professor Albert Jabs of Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina, described the program he's developed which. involves students in contemporary social issues. Jabs, an LHRAA volunteer, states that a major component of last semester's program included a trip to the state capitol in Columbia.

A Strategy For Dog-Owner Education, Ian Dunbar Jan 1981

A Strategy For Dog-Owner Education, Ian Dunbar

Animal Welfare Collection

By conservative estimates, the humane societies and societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals in the United States euthanize over 15 million pets each year. It is a great shame that people who have devoted their lives to animals should be forced to destroy the majority of animals that pass through their hands. In addition, the Pet Food Institute's 1975 Survey revealed that a high percentage of pet owners were unsatisfied with their animals and ended up giving them away, taking them to animal shelters, or losing them in accidents. It would appear that only a minority of pets …

The Politics Of Animal Rights: Making The Human Connection, Jim Mason Jan 1981

The Politics Of Animal Rights: Making The Human Connection, Jim Mason

Animal Welfare Collection

Animal Rights is in the air, so much so that the term borders on becoming a buzzword and the cause itself the latest form of radical chic. Although Lewis Gompertz, HenryS. Salt and others put forth radically different views on attitudes and relations toward other animals more than a century ago, the publication in 1972 of essays by Brigid Brophy, Richard Ryder and others in the book, Animals, Men and Morals and the more popular book, Animal Liberation, by Peter Singer have sparked another wave of these views and have inspired a spate of college courses, articles in both academic …

A Chronology Of Significant Events, Meetings, And Publications Concerning The Welfare Of Laboratory And Farm Animals, Andrew N. Rowan Jan 1981

A Chronology Of Significant Events, Meetings, And Publications Concerning The Welfare Of Laboratory And Farm Animals, Andrew N. Rowan

Animal Welfare Collection

It is not readily appreciated, except for those of us who are deeply involved in the animal movement, how the debate on animal rights and animal exploitation has grown and spread over the past ten years. It may, therefore, be of some interest to readers to have a chronology of important events and publications from the past decade. The outline is not meant to be comprehensive and others would no doubt highlight different events, but it is hoped that it will prove to be of interest and of use. The philosophical, legislative and scientific aspects are dealt with separately for …

Family Security In The Transition From Farm To City, 1750-1850, Richard Bushman Jan 1981

Family Security In The Transition From Farm To City, 1750-1850, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The most elemental change, affecting all who left the farm, shopkeepers and transportation workers as well as factory hands, was separation from the land. For the traditional peasant, land was a source of nearly every human need--nourishment, warmth, clothing. Landowners derived income from their property during illness and old age. Land was both subsistence and security. Planning for a season, a life, or for coming generations turned on the acquisition and use of land. The industrial work discipline may have disrupted familiar work rhythms, but separation from soil jeopardized survival itself. Among many changes, the relation of land and family …

Critique [Of A Proposed Model For Advocacy Services For Mexican Undocumented Aliens With Mental Health Needs], Helen G. Chapin Jan 1981

Critique [Of A Proposed Model For Advocacy Services For Mexican Undocumented Aliens With Mental Health Needs], Helen G. Chapin

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Mexican undocumented aliens are and will continue to be a presence in the United States. This Proposal cites a 1972 study of an estimated eight million illegal aliens in this country, a figure that has climbed sharply since that date. Positive contributions toward improving the living and working situations of this population are, therefore, necessary and important.

Ethnicity And Human Rights: An Organizational And Individual Perspective, George E. Carter Jan 1981

Ethnicity And Human Rights: An Organizational And Individual Perspective, George E. Carter

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Article I of the Universal Declaration of Human rights adopted by the United Nations in December, 1948, holds: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." Article II stipulates that everyone is entitled to the rights set forth in the Declaration "without distinction of any kind," including race, colour, sex, language. In the view of many American ethnic people the question of human rights and ethnicity has been and still is one of the most neglected aspects of …

A Proposed Model For Advocacy Services For Mexican Undocumented Aliens With Mental Health Needs, Ramon Salcido Jan 1981

A Proposed Model For Advocacy Services For Mexican Undocumented Aliens With Mental Health Needs, Ramon Salcido

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the studies that have focused on undocumented aliens from Mexico, to discuss barriers that inhibit their use of mental health services, and to outline ways in which social workers employed in mental health institutions can become actively involved in helping this group. Since 1900, immigration to the United States from Mexico has followed a pattern of continuing legal and illegal entry; legal alien families from Mexico are defined as those who have been legally admitted to the U.S., whereas undocumented families.are those residing in the U.S. who have entered illegally. Mexico has …

Critique [Of Symbolic Interaction And Black Mental Health: Understanding Black Self-Conceptions], Jimmy L. Williams Jan 1981

Critique [Of Symbolic Interaction And Black Mental Health: Understanding Black Self-Conceptions], Jimmy L. Williams

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Aside from the intrinsic merit of Dr. Shirley V. Brown's "Symbolic interaction and Black Mental Health,...” the paper raises several important corollary issues that need extensive investigation; (1) the effects of one's self-concept upon how he or she views others; (2) the negligible effects of affirmative action programs; (3) the adverse effects of public school integration on blacks; (4) the validity of the assumption that schools in predominantly black neighborhoods are inherently inferior; and (5) the insidious notion that mainstreaming is both possible and desirable.

God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel, Joe E. Rodriquez Jan 1981

God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel, Joe E. Rodriquez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Ethnic identity has to do with freely set of values, attitudes, and behavior from one’s cultural legacy in order to affirm a unique sense of peoplehood. In the United States ethnic groups such as the Chicano or Mexican American are often stigmatized, and the psychological burden of ethnic awareness can weigh heavily. Yet a healthy sense of ethnic identity is absolutely necessary for a positive self-concept when a person is part of a group that is slighted because of race or appearance. The question then is: how do Chicanos come to terms with their cultural tradition in a society that …

Critique [Of Symbolic Interaction And Black Mental Health: Understanding Black Self-Conceptions], Barbara Hiura

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Shirley Vining Brown's “Symbolic Interaction and Black Mental Health: Understanding Black Self Conceptions” presents significant and vital information concerning the effects of negative self-concepts on black Americans. The most interesting aspect of the paper is the development of the concept of "negative belief systems."

An Exploratory Investigation Comparing Battered And Non-Battered Women Using The Hand Test, Debra A. Dalton Jan 1981

An Exploratory Investigation Comparing Battered And Non-Battered Women Using The Hand Test, Debra A. Dalton

Masters Theses

The physical and mental abuse of women as wives and lovers is a largely unrecognized crime of violence just beginning to receive attention in the United States. The extent of wifebeating is difficult to determine since, although it occurs in every strata of society and every age group, it is underreported for a variety of reasons. The motives for wife abuse are complex. There are several social and psychological explanations that have been suggested as the underlying rationale for wifebeating. Psychological testing with battered women is rare and what testing that has been done has been limited to interviews and …

[Review Of] Fran Leeper Buss, La Partera: Story Of A Midwife, Caroline White Jan 1981

[Review Of] Fran Leeper Buss, La Partera: Story Of A Midwife, Caroline White

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

La Partera is the story of Jesusita Aragén, one of the last traditional midwives of northeastern New Mexico, as written from recorded interviews between the author and Jesusita. Before telling Jesusita's account of her own life, the author introduces the reader geographically, historically, and culturally to the area of San Miguel County and its main city of Las Vegas. Buss clearly shows her love and understanding of this region where she and her husband served as United Church of Christ ministers in 1975. She writes, ”the weather is dominated by striking turquoise skies and a brilliant, penetrating sun” (p. 2) …

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield Jan 1981

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield

Theses and Dissertations

Utah County, Utah, and more particularly the Utah Valley area, has undergone an enormous change during the last forty years. Rapid growth and urbanization brings with it the problems of urban sprawl. Controlling this sprawl is determined often times by an effective growth policy. Mapping and analyzing growth patterns and trends is a useful method in determining the effectiveness of the "growth towards the cities" policy of Utah County. Research was conducted by using maps, air photos, and field work in locating the growth history of the county.
Growth has been influenced by several factors among which are the physical, …

The Vanguard

Divestment. Namibia. Haitian refugees.

Those are three of the topics acted upon by the Association of Black Lutherans (ABL) at its biennial conference in Fort Worth Texas.

The conference voted to support divestment from financial institutions and companies that continue to engage in business in South Africa. The 1980 LCA convention in Seattle rejected apartheid and all other forms of racial discrimination but did not ask for divestment. Instead it asked for criteria which would help determine whether total divestment or active shareholder objections were "most effective" strategies.
