Individual Experience And Critical Consciousness: Sources Of Social Change In Everyday Life, David G. Gil
Individual Experience And Critical Consciousness: Sources Of Social Change In Everyday Life, David G. Gil
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social scientists tend to interpret social change as the result of collective action. However, all collective action is at some level and time initiated and carried out by individuals, who, of course, are rooted in particular social contexts. A theory of social change needs to derive, therefore, not only from the study of collective action, but also from the study of individual initiation of, and involvement in, social change oriented practice.
The following observations on individual involvement in social change practice are based on personal experience and study over several decades. They are not a theory of social change but …
Older Blacks' Predictions Of Their Social Support Networks, Brenda Crawley
Older Blacks' Predictions Of Their Social Support Networks, Brenda Crawley
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Predicting resources for one's later years is risky and evokes feelings of vulnerability. Findings from a study of older blacks reveal that while race and culture may predispose clients to prefer certain resources, such as spouses and children, others realistically expect kin and friends to care for them. The heterogeneous nature of the black elderly suggests an open posture be maintained in assessing support resources for those who face short- or long- term care needs.

Uses Of Clinical Sociology In Crisis Intervention Practice, Bryan D. Byers
Uses Of Clinical Sociology In Crisis Intervention Practice, Bryan D. Byers
Clinical Sociology Review
Crisis intervention is a practice-oriented set of procedures designed to offer someone experiencing incapacitating stress emotional first-aid. Concepts and ideas found in the sociological tradition are quite applicable to crisis intervention practice. What has been offered are alternatives to the traditional psychological and psychiatric positions.
There are similar characteristics between crisis intervention and clinical sociology as change strategies. Particularly, the ideas found under the sociological social psychology purview serve well when practicing crisis intervention. The interpretation of crisis events is a social act in that the individual experiencing the crisis is influenced through social circumstances. Social circumstances play a vital …

About 110 Christians from across the U.S. recently gathered on Chicago's South Side for a three day conference to examine and reflect on the Kairos Document of South Africa. They were joined by dozens of southern Africans, including several who were at the heart of that document's genesis, and who shared with participants some story of the document's unique evolution as 'Challenge to the Church: A Theological Comment on the Political Crisis m South Africa.'

[Review Of] Lydio F. Tomasi, Ed. Italian Americans: New Perspectives In Italian Immigration And Ethnicity, Gloria Lothrop
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
There are those who have heralded the 1980s as "The Decade of the Italian American" as many of the 20 million Americans of Italian descent achieve increasing prominence in politics, business, education and the arts. This new role assumed by Americans of immigrant stock has necessitated revised patterns of investigation addressing the impact of socio-economic mobility, the effects of transmigration and the growing phenomenon of exogenous marriage. For example, of the Italian American women born since 1950, between two-thirds and three-quarters have married outside the ethnic group. Finally, the size and multigenerational sampling provided by the Italian American population invites …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Spiritual dismemberment, which many associate with the plight of disinherited Native Americans, has dislocated millions of others in this country as well. Teaching multi-ethnic literature, I note in particular streams of students who like the narrator of Oritz's poem are lonely for an authentic connection to a personal history. Throughout the term, they read selections which extol or dramatize the palpable struggles of characters who have a strong bond with ethnic traditions. They attend class surrounded by identifiable, certifiable ethnics. They listen to the instructor hold forth on the apocalyptic possibilities open to any who have access to these worldviews. …
