Socio-Legal Defenitions Of Family, Jean H. Thoresen Jan 1991

Socio-Legal Defenitions Of Family, Jean H. Thoresen

Clinical Sociology Review

Recent decisions in family law cases suggest that some courts are ready to broaden the judicial definition of "family," and to create or accept a definition that extends the traditional notion of what constitutes a "family." This provides sociologists with an opportunity to work within or coordinate with the legal system in redefining "family" to provide a more inclusive concept which courts could then apply.

Combining Sociology With Epidemiology: Community-Oriented Primary Care In A Rural Mountain County, Thomas Plaut, Suzanne Landis, June Trevor Jan 1991

Combining Sociology With Epidemiology: Community-Oriented Primary Care In A Rural Mountain County, Thomas Plaut, Suzanne Landis, June Trevor

Clinical Sociology Review

Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) focuses attention on the community as "patient" and involves its residents in a process of discernment of health needs and consequent action. COPC's emphasis on community involvement provides an opportunity for the sociologist to create the tools for resident participation in health needs assessment and subsequent interventions. This paper describes sociology's role in a rural Appalachian county COPC program funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Some 41 focus group interviews were employed to reach more than 416 residents. Interview results were combined with epidemiological and census data and fed back to a 27-member Community Advisory …

The Sociological Practitioner In Organizational Health Promotion Programming, Linda R. Weber Jan 1991

The Sociological Practitioner In Organizational Health Promotion Programming, Linda R. Weber

Clinical Sociology Review

In this paper, the roles of the sociological practitioner will be investigated as they apply to the rapidly growing field of organizational health promotion. Health promotion programs include a combination of educational, organizational, and environmental activities designed to support health-conducive behavior within the work setting. Such programs usually include weight reduction programs, aerobic exercise classes, blood pressure monitoring and so on. Theoretically, the ideas of Mead and Becker are investigated as one approach to the understanding of health behaviors. Methodologically, the utilization of needs assessment and evaluation tools provide integral information for the development of a program specifically tailored to …

Obesity And Nutritional Sociology: A Model For Coping With The Stigma Of Obesity, Jeffery Sobal Jan 1991

Obesity And Nutritional Sociology: A Model For Coping With The Stigma Of Obesity, Jeffery Sobal

Clinical Sociology Review

Nutritional sociology uses sociological theories and methods to study and influence food patterns, eating habits, and nutrition. Obesity and weight loss are important topics in nutritional sociology, and stigmatization of the obese is a long-standing interest. Most past sociological work has only described stigmatization, rather than developing ways to facilitate coping with it. A model for coping with the stigma of obesity is presented here. The model includes four components: Recognition, Readiness, Reaction, and Repair. Recognition involves awareness of the stigma of obesity and understanding about stigmatization. Readiness involves anticipation that stigmatization may occur in specific settings or by some …

Developing New Models Of Service Delivery To Aged Abuse Victims: Does It Matter?, Mary C. Sengstock, Melanie Hwalek, Carolyn Stahl Jan 1991

Developing New Models Of Service Delivery To Aged Abuse Victims: Does It Matter?, Mary C. Sengstock, Melanie Hwalek, Carolyn Stahl

Clinical Sociology Review

The political pressures imposed on social agencies often require the introduction of alternative models of service delivery. There is some question, however, as to the effectiveness of such theoretical models. Do they play an important role in determining the types of services provided, their effectiveness, or the manner in which the agencies provide the services? Or do agencies provide relatively similar services, regardless of the model? This paper provides an analysis of the services provided to elderly victims of abuse under two different theoretical models: a legal model (with two variations), and a model of intensive service delivery. The programs …

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), Michael R. Hill Jan 1991

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Harriet Martineau authored the first systematic methodological treatise in sociology, conducted extended international comparative studies of social institutions, and translated Auguste Comte's Cours de philosophie positive into English, thus structurally facilitating the introduction of sociology and positivism into the United States. In her youth she was a professional writer who captured the popular English mind by wrapping social scientific instruction in a series of widely read short novels. In her maturity she was an astute sociological theorist, methodologist, and analyst of the first order. To the extent that any complex institutional phenomenon such as sociology can have identifiable founders, Alice …

Lucile Eaves (1869-1953), Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Lucile Eaves was a research and applied sociologist, a professor, and an activist. She was fired by a desire to change women's status and that of laborers, anticipating the contemporary concern with the structural ties between class and sex. She worked in the South Park Social Settlement of San Francisco, and as a faculty member at Stanford University, the University of Nebraska, and Simmons College. Her work for the Women's Educational and Industrial Union generated numerous quantitative studies of women's lives in a variety of contexts. She is one of the first sociologists to study medical sociology, especially women with …

Grandfather Rasmus B. Nielsen's Written Account Of His Life From Birth Until He Emigrated From Denmark To The United States, Harald R. Jensen

The Bridge

Born the 4th of August 1851. Son of Niels Kristensen and wife, Karen Marie (born Rasmussen). I have very few recollections from my childhood. Father, I can remember, but only faintly. However, I can remember the birth of a little sister and can recall she was very sick and weak. She suffered from a contagious sickness, which was very dangerous. After she fell ill, I was sent to my grandparents in Sk0rring. I don't know how old I was then, but that is where I grew up. I shall try, from memory, to picture the character and life of my …

Edith Abbott (1876-1957), Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Abbott was the first woman dean of a graduate school in an American university and, simultaneously, the first dean of the first graduate school of social work in the nation. Her leading role in social work overshadowed her deep roots in sociology, in which she was a major scholar of her day. She was a prolific author (Marks 1958) and specialized in the study of women's rights and wages. Her life was dedicated to the eradication of social inequality facing blacks, immigrants, people in poverty, and laborers. Abbott championed the use of statistical data at the University of Chicago during …

1890 Institutions' Extension Program And Rural Development, Adell Brown Jr. Dec 1990

1890 Institutions' Extension Program And Rural Development, Adell Brown Jr.

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The black land-grant colleges' contributions to developing the rural South are traced back before they were added to the land-grant system by the passage of the Morrill Act of 1890. The 1890 Extension target clientele are small farmers and limited resource persons who were not being reached by the conventional delivery system. Before 1972, the 1890 institutions primarily assisted the 1862 universities to serve black farmers and provide training and housing for black specialists and agents. In 1972, the passage of USDA Appropriation Act, under 3(d) section of the Smith-Lever Act, provided funds for the 1890 institutions to fulfill the …

Obstacles And Opportunities: Funding Research At The 1890 Land Grant Institutions, Alton Thompson Dec 1990

Obstacles And Opportunities: Funding Research At The 1890 Land Grant Institutions, Alton Thompson

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Similar to other university faculties, faculty members at 1890 land grant institutions are expected to support their research programs with grants from sources outside their institutions. Although the expectation of securing grants has not received the public attention that the "publish or perish" dictum has, faculty at the 1890 institutions seeking promotion and tenure must increasingly demonstrate that they can procure grant funds. Numerous inhibitive factors, however, tend to attenuate the success of 1890 faculty in obtaining research grant funding and in implementing such research projects. In this study, three key factors are examined: political, research infrastructure, and faculty initiative. …

The Decline Of Black Farmers And Strategies For Survival, Robert Zabawa, Arthur Siaway, Ntam Baharanyi Dec 1990

The Decline Of Black Farmers And Strategies For Survival, Robert Zabawa, Arthur Siaway, Ntam Baharanyi

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

By most accounts, black farmers in the United States are categorized as either limited resource or subsistence producers given an historic lack of access to credit, mechanical, and land resources. Additionally, advanced age and limited education have placed black farmers on the "endangered" list. Given these constraints to financial and human capital, black farmers have adopted survival strategies in an attempt to maintain their farms. Results presented here from research conducted in the Black Belt region of Alabama indicate that there is a high degree of participation in the off-farm workforce and reliance on off-farm income for black farm family …

How Voluntary Agency Networks Fared In The 1980s, Margaret Gibelman, Harold W. Demone Jr. Dec 1990

How Voluntary Agency Networks Fared In The 1980s, Margaret Gibelman, Harold W. Demone Jr.

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Believing that the least government is the best government, the Reagan Administration favored, in both principle and practice, the transfer of functions to and fiscal independence of the private sector. This article provides a comparative analysis of the financial status of three major types of voluntary agency networks before and near the end of the Reagan era. Focusing on national voluntary health, child welfare league, and family service agencies, proportionate and absolute revenues, sources of income, and new income generating strategies are examined within the context of philanthropic trends and the compensatory role of state and local governments.

These agency …

Testing The Underclass Concept By Surveying Attitudes And Behavior, Kathleen J. Pottick Dec 1990

Testing The Underclass Concept By Surveying Attitudes And Behavior, Kathleen J. Pottick

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Recent interest in the problems of an underclass has highlighted deficiencies in the conceptual understanding of the term and empirical investigation into its dynamics. This research note describes the current definition of the concept and presents recent empirical tests of it. By presenting available survey data sets that can identify underclass attitudes, values and behavior, the note refines the deliberations on measurement. Two underclass groups, welfare recipients and criminals, are used to illustrate the methodology

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer Nov 1990

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer

School K-12

Dropout prevention is a major concern of school districts throughout the country. In Los Angeles it is estimated that 39% of students fail to graduate from high school. Nationwide, the rate is not too much different, especially in inner city communities where large numbers of Hispanic and African-American youth attend school. While dropout rates have been traditionally high for decades, people continue to ask, why? Many billions of dollars have been spent trying to answer this question and many programs have been developed which attempt to address some of these problems. No one has come up with a comprehensive answer …
