Social And Environmental Factors In Lung Cancer Mortality In Post-War Poland, Halina Szejnwal Brown, Robert Goble, Henryk Kirschner Jan 1995

Social And Environmental Factors In Lung Cancer Mortality In Post-War Poland, Halina Szejnwal Brown, Robert Goble, Henryk Kirschner

Sustainability and Social Justice

Poland and other Eastern European countries have undergone heavy industrial development with marked increases in air pollution and occupational exposure in the nearly 50 years since World War II. These countries have also experienced substantial increases in chronic disease mortality in the past three decades. While it is tempting to assume a direct association between these phenomena, more detailed analyses are called for. Poland offers a potentially rich opportunity for comparing geographical patterns of disease incidence and of industrial change. In this paper we 1) elucidate the prospects for attributing lung cancer mortality to industrial emissions in Poland, using an …

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1995

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper focuses on popular music written and produced by Singaporeans to illustrate the nature of social relationships based on ideological hegemony and resistance. Analysis is based on two groups of music: 'national' songs supported by the government in the 'Sing Singapore' programme; and songs brought together in Not the Singapore song book. Interviews with local lyricists and analysis of video productions provide supplementary information. Music is used by the ruling elite to perpetuate certain ideologies aimed at political socialization and to inculcate a civil religion that directs favour and fervour towards the nation. Music is also a form of …

Some History Of Clinical Sociology And Sociological Practice, Part I, David J. Kallen Jan 1995

Some History Of Clinical Sociology And Sociological Practice, Part I, David J. Kallen

Clinical Sociology Review

From the beginning of the discipline, sociologists have used their knowledge to bring about change. This paper reviews the early antecedents of sociological practice, and then concentrates on three areas of practice as illustrative of practice. These are: studies in intergroup relations, before and after World War II; the studies of the morale of soldiers conducted during the Second World War; and the juvenile delinquency and poverty programs. After the end of World War II the focus of sociology shifted from the outside world to disciplinary concerns, and theoretical development was seen as incompatible with the use of sociology. Sociological …

Special Moments, Special Times: Problematic Occasions Following The Death Of A Child, Sarah Brabant, Craig J. Forsyth, Glenda Mcfarlain Jan 1995

Special Moments, Special Times: Problematic Occasions Following The Death Of A Child, Sarah Brabant, Craig J. Forsyth, Glenda Mcfarlain

Clinical Sociology Review

Using data obtained from 14 interviews representing 9 families and 10 child deaths, this paper examines moments in time that occasion or may occasion social encounters that are problematic for bereaved parent(s): 1) holidays in general, e.g., Christmas, New Years; 2) particular events, e.g., weddings, funerals, graduations; and 3) those occasions specifically associated with the deceased child, e.g., the child's birthday and/or death anniversary. For bereaved parents such occasions may be excruciating. In the case of holidays or special events, the absence of the deceased may be especially poignant since he or she would have been present had he/she lived. …

Femenism, God's Will, And Women's Empowerment, C. Margaret Hall Jan 1995

Femenism, God's Will, And Women's Empowerment, C. Margaret Hall

Clinical Sociology Review

This study is based on clinical sociological principles derived from Durkheim's and Weber's theories, as well as from contemporary research findings which suggest that religion and feminism can be social sources of empowerment for women. The theoretical orientation therefore incorporates social and cultural influences on behavior, as well as the intrapsychic and interpersonal decision-making processes characteristic of other therapeutic modalities.

Two life histories show ways in which feminism and religion reinforce women's personal growth, and expand the scope of their contributions to society. Influences of feminism and religion on these women's beliefs are examined, as well as how redefining responsibilities …

The Clinical Sociologist As A Boundary Manager: The Case Of University Administration, John G. Bruhn, Alan P. Chesney Jan 1995

The Clinical Sociologist As A Boundary Manager: The Case Of University Administration, John G. Bruhn, Alan P. Chesney

Clinical Sociology Review

Managing conflicts at the interfaces or boundaries at the individual, group and organizational levels is an essential part of the job of a university administrator. As universities become subject to increasing external pressures, especially financial, administrators are called upon to reorganize, restructure and reallocate resources. These interventions substantially challenge academic administrators and the clinical sociologists who occupy these roles to utilize their skills as conflict and risk managers. This paper describes and discusses the experiences and observations of the authors as boundary managers in university settings.

Effects Of Organizing Voluntary Help On Social Support, Stress And Health Of Elderly People, Peter C. Meyer, Monica Budowski Jan 1995

Effects Of Organizing Voluntary Help On Social Support, Stress And Health Of Elderly People, Peter C. Meyer, Monica Budowski

Clinical Sociology Review

In a district of an urban community an agency arranging for voluntary help was built up within an action research project. Data from a longitudinal study are used to evaluate the effects this agency has on elderly people. The hypothesis formulated is that organized voluntary help is a means to improve social support and reduce social stress. These effects are expected to have indirect positive effects on health. In the first survey a representative, weighted random sample (total N=907, of which 303 were elderly, i.e. older than 64 years old) was asked about social stress, social support, health, demand for …

The contextual milieu revealed that Spalding was current with his times in fostering family-life education, but unique in his approach.

Method. The author examined primary documents from four archival sources, as well as reference holdings in two libraries. All book and article publications by Spalding were also examined. The findings were analyzed and compared. Agreements and inconsistencies were noted to maintain internal reliability. Secondary sources were utilized to create the contextual milieu and to supplement the primary …

Diversity Management: An Administrative Case Study In A Tax-Exempt Human Service Organization, Jerry L. Johnson

Masters Theses

Diversity management is a business strategy that is intended to create an organizational climate where people from diverse backgrounds can succeed based on their work performance and not their personal similarities or differences with the organization's leadership. Diversity management programs are intended to help business remove barriers resulting from discrimination.; The present study investigated the need for a diversity management program in a tax-exempt human service organization. The perceptions and attitudes of organization employees, measured by survey instruments, in conjunction with an employee compensation study, provided the data for this investigation.; The instrument designed for this study and the random …

A Naturalistic Study Of The Relationship Between The Process Of Empowerment And Mental Health During Adolescence, Michael Terrence Ungar Jan 1995

A Naturalistic Study Of The Relationship Between The Process Of Empowerment And Mental Health During Adolescence, Michael Terrence Ungar

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A qualitative study of 21 at-risk adolescents led to the development of a grounded theory which shows that mental health and resilience depends on the acceptance of teenagers experiences for their self-definitions and the power they exercise in the social discourse which constructs these defining labels. Using the metaphor of drift, this paper explores how teens seek acceptance for the most powerful personal labels accessible to them. The process of empowerment is conceptualized as a protective mechanism giving a young person power in the social construction of his or her identity. The young people in this study explained that participation …

Child Sexual Abuse, Moral Panic, And The Mass Media: A Case Study In The Social Construction Of Deviance, Steven M. Gorelick Jan 1995

Child Sexual Abuse, Moral Panic, And The Mass Media: A Case Study In The Social Construction Of Deviance, Steven M. Gorelick

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This is a case study of newswork in a moral panic. Specifically, Stanley Cohen's concept of "moral panic" is used to examine the practices of a group of reporters who covered a widely publicized case of alleged child sexual abuse in a day-care center. Moral panics occur when a perceived threat to the social order emerges with such force, and with such little overt warning, that routine discourse about right and wrong gives way to a flood of indignation about an extraordinary breach of normal moral boundaries. Suspending normal rules governing social control, officials rush to crack down on the …

Social Consequences Of Delayed Childbearing And Infertility, Joan Liebmann-Smith Jan 1995

Social Consequences Of Delayed Childbearing And Infertility, Joan Liebmann-Smith

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This is a qualitative longitudinal study of delayed childbearing and infertility. The initial sample consisted of 35 women. Although they knew they might never have biological children, most did not regret postponing parenthood.

Because infertility is a socially defined illness, the doctor-patient relationship was fraught with conflict. It tended to follow a set pattern: from dependency to disappointment to discord to dissociation. The optimal doctor-patient relationship was mutual participation.

Infertility adversely affected marriages. The "medicalization of masturbation" and intercourse caused many marital problems. Couples also argued over how often and with whom to discuss infertility, when to stop treatment and …

An Analysis Of Racial Bias In Revocation Rates Among Felony Probationers In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Ross Thomas Todd Jan 1995

An Analysis Of Racial Bias In Revocation Rates Among Felony Probationers In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Ross Thomas Todd

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The probation revocation hearing is one of many decision points in the legal system. Some probation violators are revoked from probation supervision and ordered to serve a prison sentence, while others are given another chance to successfully complete their period of supervision. Some legal scholars and researchers believe systematic racial discrimination occurs in the justice system, while others maintain that all criminal defendants are treated the same regardless of race. This does not mean that race never plays a role, only that it is idiosyncratic rather than systematic. The results of previous studies of the effects of race on judicial …

Concerns/Needs Experienced By Low-Income Mothers Following A Postpartum Hospital Stay Of Less Than Forty-Eight Hours, Karen S. Kujala

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to describe the needs and concerns that low income women experience during the first seven days at home following discharge from a postpartum hospital stay of less than forty-eight hours. Dorothea Orem's theory of self-care was the conceptual framework.; The sample (n = 50) consisted of Medicaid eligible postpartum mothers, 18 years of age or older, who were discharged with their infants in less than 48 hours after delivery. The mothers were contacted by telephone seven days after discharge to complete an interview regarding concerns they might have experienced.; Data were analyzed descriptively. The …

Visions Of A Healthy Community In Alternative Health Care, Lisa H. Jackson Jan 1995

Visions Of A Healthy Community In Alternative Health Care, Lisa H. Jackson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The American health care system is undergoing rapid change. The Clinton Administration is in the process of restructuring not only the way health care is delivered but is attempting to make access to health care more inclusive. This change will affect patients (the public), insurance companies, doctors, and the burgeoning alternative health care industry. Statistically, there is an increase in the number of people who are turning to and utilizing alternative health care as their preferred method of treatment. This thesis attempts to determine the prevalence of alternative health care use in the Arcata/Eureka area and to assess if it …

Social Support In An Urban Moroccan Neighborhood: The Effects Of Social Networks, Mediation And Patronage On The Physical Health And Psychological Adjustment Of Women, Carla Ann Green Jan 1995

Social Support In An Urban Moroccan Neighborhood: The Effects Of Social Networks, Mediation And Patronage On The Physical Health And Psychological Adjustment Of Women, Carla Ann Green

Dissertations and Theses

Although there has been a great deal of research in the areas of social networks, social support and well-being over the past two decades, little of that research has been cross-cultural, and virtually none has been carried out in countries outside the West. The present study attempted to describe the structure and functioning of the social networks of a group of relatively modern urban Moroccan women, and the associations among their social networks, social support, physical health and psychological well-being. Extensive interviews were conducted with 108 married or previously-married women who were living in a middle-class neighborhood in Rabat, Morocco. …

The Ufo Contact Movement From The 1950'S To The Present, Christoper Bader

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

"Since the beginning of the UFO movement in the late 1940s, beliefs about what the aliens are like and the purpose of their visits to Earth have changed numerous times. The first claims of extended contact with alien beings in the early 1950s were entirely different in form and content from the current, frightening UFO abduction tales. This article will trace the UFO movement from its origin in 1947 to the present, explaining how its prevailing paradigms have changed."

The Influence Of Western Models Of Service Delivery On The Development Of Services For Young Children In Malaysia, Teresa Hutchins Jan 1995

The Influence Of Western Models Of Service Delivery On The Development Of Services For Young Children In Malaysia, Teresa Hutchins

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In the last fifty years, many developing and newly industrialising countries have experienced a rapid expansion of care and education programme for young children. The rapid expansion of these programmes which are often modelled on those from the west, together with new understandings about the nature of children's development, has led to concern that these programmes do not meet the needs of children living in very different social and cultural environments. The 1989 UNESCO review of early childhood care and education programmes in the Asia-Pacific region highlights the need for integrated early childhood care and education programmes and reports that …

Community Impacts From A Temporary Military Deployment: The Case Of Fort Stewart, Ga., Warren Kriesel, Gina L. Gilbreath Dec 1994

Community Impacts From A Temporary Military Deployment: The Case Of Fort Stewart, Ga., Warren Kriesel, Gina L. Gilbreath

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The rural South has long been a popular location for the installment of military bases. Small Southern communities around these installations have experienced many social and economic changes due to operational changes in the base. Even the slightest alterations have a ripple effect on residents who rely on the base for local economic stability. Although many studies have examined the impacts associated with military base closures, this paper addresses a related but not identical problem. Using a combined rural sociological and agricultural and applied economic perspective, an analysis is made which examines the local social and economic disruption caused by …

Antecedents Of Infant Mortality: An Analysis Of Risk Factors In Rural And Urban Arkansas, Shannon M. Holman, Frank L. Farmer, Russell S. Kirby, Bruce L. Dixon Dec 1994

Antecedents Of Infant Mortality: An Analysis Of Risk Factors In Rural And Urban Arkansas, Shannon M. Holman, Frank L. Farmer, Russell S. Kirby, Bruce L. Dixon

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This research examines the relationship between social and biological characteristics of the infant and mother and the probability of infant survival through the first year of life. The research also includes a consideration of the influence of residence (rural vs. urban). Employing linked birth and death certificate data for Arkansas (1985-1989), a logit model was estimated to assess the impact of social and biological factors on the probability of survival. The results indicate that metropolitan residence is positively associated with infant survival, but only at a marginal significance level. Other notable results include the importance of prenatal care and a …

Dependence In The Rural South, Libby V. Morris Dec 1994

Dependence In The Rural South, Libby V. Morris

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This article re-introduces the concept of dependence into rural studies and shows that age-related dependence varies greatly by race and location across the South. Youth, elder, and total dependence ratios were calculated for blacks and whites and by metropolitan and nonmetropolitan locations for Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Total, youth, and elder dependence are higher in nonmetropolitan areas. The highest dependence is in nonmetropolitan counties with high percentages of black population. Total dependence is higher for blacks than whites. This difference is primarily because of the much higher dependence ratios for black youth. Elder dependence is highest in nonmetropolitan counties, and …

Changing The Health Care System: Opinions Of Rural And Urban Residents, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis Dec 1994

Changing The Health Care System: Opinions Of Rural And Urban Residents, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This paper examines the opinions of rural and urban residents toward a full health care system provided by the government. The data used in the study come from a statewide poll conducted by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Because of a greater need for health care reform in rural areas, it was assumed that rural Louisianians might be more supportive of a government health care system than their urban counterparts. However, analysis of the data indicates that a person's residence had no statistically significant effect on attitudes toward government sponsored health care.
