The Nationalization Of Arabic And Islamic Education In Egypt: Dar Al Alum And Al Azhar, Lois A. Aroian

Faculty Books

This study sets forth for the first time the vital role of Dar Al'ulum, Egypt's first and only continuously operating university level teaching training institution, in the nationalization of Islamic and Arabic education in Egypt. Ali Mubarak, nineteenth century Egypt's longest enduring bureaucrat, initiated , and Khedive Ismail (1863-1879) founded Dar al Ulum in 1892 to train teachers of Arabic and Turkish for the newly expanding national (amiriyya) school system. This study grew out of a PhD dissertation, "Education, Language and Culture in Modern Egypt: Dar Al Ulum and its Graduates (1872-1923)" presented at The University of Michigin in 1978.

Social Work Pac's And State Social Work Associations Purpose, History, And Action Strategies, Gary Mathews May 1983

Social Work Pac's And State Social Work Associations Purpose, History, And Action Strategies, Gary Mathews

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social work as a profession has only recently become politically active. One consequence of this interest in the political process has been the proliferation of political action committees as creatures of the National Association of Social Workers and its state chapters. Social work PAC's are a key ingredient necessary to enable the profession to influence public policy. Perhaps because political action committees are new to NASW, or perhaps because NASW is new to politics, very little has been written about the history, purpose or strategic implications of these committees.

This paper will trace the development and operation of PAC's and …

The Intersection Of Political Culture And Fiscal Federalism: State Block Grants In Alabama, David Sink, Michele Wilson May 1983

The Intersection Of Political Culture And Fiscal Federalism: State Block Grants In Alabama, David Sink, Michele Wilson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Political culture and intergovernmental relations together shape specific policy actions of a state government within the constraints of its economic condition. Although financial resources provided a state government strongly influence the level of its policy outputs, the political and administrative dynamics appear to affect the exact nature of that policy. A case study of state block grant implementation in the state of Alabama provides an opportunity to observe these variables in action. In particular, the prominent role played by the executive branch appears to have influenced strongly the decisions made concerning social services, health policy, and community development.

Communities such as Scottsbluff, Grand Island, and Hooper, Nebraska were provided technical assistance. CUAR conducted two major studies for the City of Omaha. [Review Of] Simone Schwarz-Bart, The Bridge Of Beyond, Wolfgang Binder

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Simone Schwarz-Bart's first novel (1972) makes highly commendable reading for anybody interested in Afro-Caribbean literature. Barbara Bray's translation does remarkably well in capturing the poetic texture of the narrator's (Telumee) account; Bridget Jones' introduction is useful but could have focused more on the novel itself and on its sources.

[Review Of] Elsa V. Goveia, A Study On The Historiography Of The British West Indies, To The End Of The Nineteenth Century, Roland L. Guyotte Jan 1983

[Review Of] Elsa V. Goveia, A Study On The Historiography Of The British West Indies, To The End Of The Nineteenth Century, Roland L. Guyotte

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This is an extremely learned work. Published originally by the Pan American Institute of History and Geography in 1956 and recently reprinted in paperback by Howard Press, A Study on the Historiography of the British West Indies discusses almost seventy-five, often multi-volume works published between 1530 and 1898. This material includes works published in English, French, Spanish and Dutch. As the author points out, many of these volumes were originally composed by gifted amateurs who wrote with polemical purposes. The historiography of the British West Indies is a minefield of controversies about fundamental human questions which are exemplified in a …

Understanding Needs And Concerns Of Black Students In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Thomas M. Caulfield Jan 1983

Understanding Needs And Concerns Of Black Students In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Thomas M. Caulfield

Masters Theses

The problem of this study was to increase the general publics' awareness of the difficulties Black Americans faced in pursuit of higher education.

The procedure was a twofold process. First, the writer reviewed some of the pre-college variables that affected the Black student. Second, the needs and concerns of the Black student at a predominantly White University were studied by the use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to three groups on the Eastern Illinois University Campus. The first group was comprised of twenty-five Black students that were currently enrolled in the University. The second group was twenty Black …

[Review Of] Jimmie Lewis Franklin, Journey Toward Hope: A History Of Blacks In Oklahoma, Charles C. Irby

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Journey Toward Hope is a welcome volume on blacks west of the Mississippi. The author has effectively demonstrated how Oklahoma's geography, between the West and the South, was responsible for its segregated development; white Oklahomans chose the racial customs, policies, and institutions of the Deep South to “keep Blacks in their place."

[Review Of] James Diego Vigil, From Indians To Chicanos: A Sociocultural History, Homer D.C. Garcia Jan 1983

[Review Of] James Diego Vigil, From Indians To Chicanos: A Sociocultural History, Homer D.C. Garcia

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Historians are typically satisfied with pinpointing dates and describing associated events while minimizing speculation and interpretations which cannot be directly supported with evidence. There is no question that this is a vital and popular methodological approach, and Chicano studies historians have usually complied with this norm--until now.

Consumer Images Of Shopping Centres A Socio-Economic Analysis, David W. Bell Jan 1983

Consumer Images Of Shopping Centres A Socio-Economic Analysis, David W. Bell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous research has shown that behaviour by consumers is influenced by many interacting factors that motivate each individual in different ways. It is how these factors are perceived and combined by each person that leads to the formation of consumer images of shopping centres. Image is an important criterion in the comprehension of the consumer’s perception of shopping centres. Studies have found that the consumer’s image is related in a systematic way with the measures of social and economic characteristics of the consumer. Occupation and income are two variables that have often been employed by previous researchers to measure a …

The Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery : An Exercise In Historical Demography, Cora P. Teel Jan 1983

The Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery : An Exercise In Historical Demography, Cora P. Teel

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This work describes the use of three sources of data, cemetery inscriptions, vital registrations of births and deaths, and the manuscript census rolls. Consequently, it emphasizes the technique and methodology of the investigation. While the primary purpose of the study was to discover the uses and limitations of the material, observations about the sample never the less derive from the data, for the tools of historical demography can provide information about the population that becomes almost biographical in nature.

The Design, Field Test, And Description Of A Model For Collaborative Long-Range Community Planning, Ozzie D. Parks Dec 1982

The Design, Field Test, And Description Of A Model For Collaborative Long-Range Community Planning, Ozzie D. Parks

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to design and field test a model for collaborative long-range community planning. A model was designed on the basis of research found in the literature, tested in a community setting, and evaluated regarding its effectiveness.

The problem delineated for the study was the lack of collaborative long-range planning in our society, particularly at the community level. A review of the literature in this field indicated that although long-range planning is considered to be important, it is seldom practiced successfully. The study's response to the problem was to design and field test a model which …
