The Free Negro In Illinois Prior To The Civil War, 1818-1860, Steven J. Savery Jan 1986

The Free Negro In Illinois Prior To The Civil War, 1818-1860, Steven J. Savery

Masters Theses

Free Negroes embodied one of the great dilemmas in the ante-bellum history of the state of Illinois. Nominally a free state, Illinois endeavored mightily to suppress, exclude, and dispose of a class of people who were the ultimate result of the anti-slavery movement. While a majority of Illinoisans deemed the peculiar institution undesirable, they had no intention of accepting free Negroes as equal citizens. Free blacks were often regarded as dangerous and a menace to the well-being of the entire society. Yet, Illinois reconciled its apparently contradictory views on slavery and the free Negro to a remarkable degree.

The reconciliation …

[Review Of] Waldo E. Martin, Jr. The Mind Of Frederick Douglass, Kent L. Koppelman Jan 1986

[Review Of] Waldo E. Martin, Jr. The Mind Of Frederick Douglass, Kent L. Koppelman

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

He was one of the foremost orators and abolitionists of the 19th century. He was also a feminist who actively worked for woman's suffrage. He was a Christian who opposed the use of the King James Bible in public schools as a violation of the separation of church and state. He was a former slave and designated spokesman for black people whose second marriage was to a white woman. Frederick Douglass was highly praised and soundly criticized by blacks and whites alike, but through it all he maintained a consistent and powerful moral voice calling upon this nation to measure …

[Review Of] L.G. Moses And Raymond Wilson. Indian Lives: Essays On Nineteenth And Twentieth-Century Native American Leaders, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1986

[Review Of] L.G. Moses And Raymond Wilson. Indian Lives: Essays On Nineteenth And Twentieth-Century Native American Leaders, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In this volume, insights into American Indian ethnicity are presented through synopses of the lives of eight individuals. Analyses of these lives exhibit dimensions of family and kinship ties, cultural traditions, acculturation vis-a-vis the dominant society, and personal choices. The eight lives selected provide some balance in terms of geography, tribal affiliation, and gender (five men and three women). Five of the individuals were born in the 1850s and 1860s and died between 1915 and 1947; one person lived from 1811 to 1875; another from 1880 to 1949; the eighth, still living, was born in 1937.

[Review Of] Paule Marshall. Praisesong For The Widow, Delo Washington Jan 1986

[Review Of] Paule Marshall. Praisesong For The Widow, Delo Washington

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow is an account of maturation or, put another way, of a black woman's willingness to confront her emergent self. Tastefully groomed, sixty-four year old Avatarra " Avey" Johnson leaves her suburban New York home to vacation with two friends on a West Indies cruise. Her decision to interrupt her plans, shortly after arriving at one of the destinations, is a surprise to everyone. Avey is compelled to discount the material investment she has made in the trip in order to follow a mind that has been haunted by dreams of her great aunt Cuney.

Spatial Structure In Pedestrian Route Choice, Michael R. Hill Jan 1986

Spatial Structure In Pedestrian Route Choice, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Aggregated pedestrian trip lengths typically follow gravity model predictions. Given this, the present research asks which route will a pedestrian choose when confronted by two or more distance-minimizing routes of equal length. Ethological, questionnaire, and interview data reveal the spatial structure of pedestrian route choices in terms of spatial complexity measures. Route complexity is found to vary by age and gender. The study is based on data collected in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Review Of Accommodating The Pedestrian By Richard Untermann, Michael R. Hill Jan 1986

Review Of Accommodating The Pedestrian By Richard Untermann, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Untermann undertakes to provide design professionals and other decision makers with a down-to-earth, practical guide for converting existing automobile-dominated urban areas into bicycle and pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods and cities. Based primarily on his personal observation, experience, and professional predilections, Untermann lists the presumed "needs" of pedestrians/bicyclists and presents a brief, uneven description of the "characteristics" of walking. A separate chapter, not well-integrated with the rest of the book, focuses specifically on bicyclists and bikeways. The second half of the book addresses specific improvements-primarily for pedestrians suggested by the author for older neighborhoods, downtowns, and suburban communities respectively.

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge Jan 1986

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Experiencing continual re-creation during each of the twenty-one years preceding 1986, this study's core may continue to unfold indefinitely. Although discovered to encapsulate elements grounded elsewhere, this culture centers upon an experimental musical group known as the Grateful Dead. First encountering the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1981, their ageless repertoire failed to capture me, but an unusual audience filled my senses. Flowing print skirts and other bright but tired attire suggested San Francisco of a time then fifteen years past. Subdued excitement replaced the alcohol inhibition of many rock shows. As the band finally appeared, a peacefully elated …

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz Jan 1986

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. In these societies children learn about the environment--that is, about agriculture, animal husbandry and the use of local resources-- largely in the course of their work and play in a variety of settings. In rural areas of the Third World the transition to capitalist relations of production is …

Social Justice Vs Criminal Justice: An Agenda For Critical Criminology, T. R. Young Sep 1985

Social Justice Vs Criminal Justice: An Agenda For Critical Criminology, T. R. Young

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper presents an overview of the features of crime and the criminal justice system in the United States. It notes the great disparities in use of five systems of justice. It discusses the amount and variety of corporate crime, political crime, street crime, white collar crime as well as organized crime. It emphasizes the inadequacy of current theories of crime in so far as corporate, white collar and political crime are concerned. The author argues that social justice is a far better way to prevent crime than are criminal justice systems and points to other societies with low crime …
